The second book in the Nobel Prize for Literature winner’s ‘Children of Violence’ series tracing the life of Martha Quest from her childhood in colonial Africa to old age in post-nuclear Britain. ‘A Proper Marriage’ sees twenty-something Martha beginning to realise that her marriage has been a terrible mistake. Already the first passionate flush of matrimony has begun to fade; sensuality has become dulled by habit, blissful motherhood now seems no more than a tiresome chore. Caught up in a maelstrom of a world war she can no longer ignore, Martha’s political consciousness begins to dawn, and, seizing independence for the first time, she chooses to make her life her own.

Doris Lessing reissue with new jacket. Harriet and David Lovatt want the same things - fidelity, love, family life and above all a permanent home. Stubbornly out of line with the fashions of the 1960s they decide to marry and lay down the foundations of their haven in a rambling Victorian house. At first, all is idyllic. Children fill their lives and re-united relatives crowd round the kitchen table at Christmas and Easter, greedily enjoying the warmth and solidity of the Lovatts home. It is with the fifth pregnancy that things begin to sour. The baby moves inside Harriet too early, too violently. After a difficult birth, he develops faster and grows much bigger than ordinary infants; he is unloving and instinctively disliked by his brothers and sisters. Inexorably, his alien presence wrecks the dream of their happy family. Harriets fear grows as she struggles to love and care for the child, finding herself faced with a dark sub-continent of human nature, unable to cope. With The Fifth Child Doris Lessing triumphs in a realm of fiction new to her. She has written an ominously tangible novel, a powerfully simple contemporary horror story that makes compulsive reading to the last word. Nominated for the 1988 Los Angeles Times Book Award

A highly personal story of the eminent British writer returning to her African roots that is "brilliant . . . and] captures the contradictions of a young country." -- New York Times Book ReviewA rich and penetrating portrait of Lessing's homeland, African Laughter recounts the visits she made to Zimbabwe in 1982, 1988, 1989, and 1992, after being exiled from the old Southern Rhodesia for 25 years for her opposition to the minority white government. Lessing uses memory and reminiscence with recent experience to depict a country in the process of change.

"Doris Lessing has a powerful voice and a particular one. It speaks in anger at the distortion of personal relations ion a unsound society, but speaks it with a wit that manages to be both pitiless and compassionate." -- Richard Eder, Los Angeles TimesThe stories and sketches in this collection penetrate to the heart of human experience with the passion and intelligence readers have come to expect of Doris Lessing. Most of the pieces are set in contemporary London, a city the author loves for its variety, its diversity, the way it connects the life of animals and birds in the parks to the streets. Lessing's fiction also explores the darker corners of relationships between women and men, as in the rich and emotionally complex title story, in which she uncovers a more parlous reality behind the fa ade of the most conventional relationship between the sexes.

In the early post-war years, Doris Lessing left her native Southern Africa in search of a grail. But the English she pursued - and found - were living in working-class homes in East London. They were lusty, quarrelsome, unscrupulous and full-blooded - quite unlike what they were supposed to be.

From the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, a compelling account of her return to the land in which she grew up. In 1956, some seven years after departed for England, Doris Lessing returned home to Southern Rhodesia. It was a journey that was both personal – a revisiting of a land and people she knew – and, inevitably, political: Southern Rhodesia was now part of the Central African Federation, where the tensions between colonialism and self-determination were at their most deeply felt. ‘Going Home’ is a book that combines journalism, reportage and memoir, humour, farce and tragedy; a book fired by the love of one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers for a country and a continent that she felt compelled to leave.

In a beleaguered city where rats and roving gangs terrorize the streets, where government has broken down and meaningless violence holds sway, a woman -- middle-aged and middle-class -- is brought a twelve-year-old girl and told that it is her responsibility to raise the child. This book, which the author has called -an attempt at autobiography,- is that woman's journal -- a glimpse of a future only slightly more horrendous than our present, and of the forces that alone can save us from total destruction.

Vuoden 2007 nobelistin ravisteleva romaani englantilaisesta kaupungista katastrofin jälkeen ja hitaasti viriävästä uuden alun toivosta. Ihmiset pakenevat sankoin joukoin maaseudulle, sillä ruuasta ja vedestä on pulaa. Autioituvassa kaupungissa asuu nainen, joka äkkiä saa huollettavakseen nuoren tytön. Yhteiskuntajärjestelmä kulkee kivuliaasti kohti kuolemaansa, ja yhtä suurella tuskalla tyttö tekee kodin seinien sisäpuolella ikiaikaista sisäistä matkaansa – kasvaa naiseksi. ”Lessingin kerronta vetoaa älyyn ja tunteeseen. Eloonjääneen muistelmat tehoaa ja jää kummasti askarruttamaan mieltä.” – Helsingin Sanomat

Mary verfällt schließlich zunehmend in Apathie.

A disturbing allegory, centered around a planet called Shikasta, which bears remarkable similarities to Earth. Through time, a higher planet, Canopus, has documented the progress of Shikasta and tried to distract its inhabitants from the evil influence of the planet Shammat, but the Shikastans continue to hurl themselves toward annihilation. This is the first volume in the series of novels Doris Lessing calls collectively "Canopus in Argos: Archives." Presented as a compilation of documents, reports, letters, speeches and journal entries, this purports to be a general study of the planet Shikasta-clearly the planet Earth-to be used by history students of the higher planet Canopus and to be stored in the Canopian archives. For eons, galactic empires have struggled against one another, and Shikasta is one of the main battlegrounds. Johar, an emissary from Canopus and the primary contributor to the archives, visits Shikasta over the millennia from the time of the giants and the biblical great flood up to the present. With every visit he tries to distract Shikastans from the evil influences of the planet Shammat but notes with dismay the ever-growing chaos and destruction of Shikasta as its people hurl themselves towards World War III and annihilation.
