Part of Renard’s Christmas Card Classics series, 25% of the RRP of each book sold goes to Three Peas. This year, instead of a Christmas card, why not send a book? ‘One Christmas was so much like another, in those years around the sea-town… that I can never remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve or whether it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six…’ Commissioned for the BBC for radio, Dylan Thomas’s enchanting tale A Child’s Christmas in Wales takes a nostalgic look at Christmases of yore – idyllic memories of white days and nights. Now considered one of his most enduring works, it has been described as ‘the twentieth-century Christmas Carol'. In a nutshell, Three Peas is a small charity supporting people who have had to flee war and/or persecution and who are seeking refuge and/or asylum in Europe. They are mostly active in Greece. They financially support a housing programme on Lesvos, a community centre in Sindos near Thessaloniki, a sports centre in Athens and NGOs’ emergency interventions in Thessaloniki, Lesvos and Samos. As well as the above they regularly support food and medical care providers.
It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobblestreets silent... In the Welsh seaside town of Llaggerub, night is moving in the streets. Its inhabitants are lost in the land of dreams: old Captain Cat catches up with his drowned shipmates, Mog Edwards the draper is consumed by mad love for Miss Price the dressmaker, and Mrs Ogmore-Pritchard whips the ghosts of her two late husbands into shape. As the sun rises, the ‘dismays and rainbows’ of each character are played out within the cycle of one day, intertwining voices and lives, dreams and reality. By turns tender, hilarious and beautifully lyrical, Dylan Thomas's ‘play for voices’ is his most beloved work and a landmark of Welsh literature.

It is a moonless spring night in the Welsh fishing town of Llareggub, and all its inhabitants are asleep. As if by incantation, their dreams become audible, and a concert of voices arises. Captain Cat, the blind retired sailor, reminisces about his time on the sea and his drowned shipmates. Mrs Ogmore-Pritchard henpecks her two late husbands, while the organist Organ Morgan harps on about music. As the sleepers awaken and get on with their daily routines, their dreams are reflected by reality, their inner thoughts and feelings by action, and a poignant, lyrical and at times humorous portrait emerges of a small community grappling with the thorns of life. A triumph of oral storytelling, Under Milk Wood was completed shortly before the author’s death and first broadcast by BBC radio in January 1954, with the first words of the play famously recited by a young Richard Burton. Universally regarded as Dylan Thomas’s crowning prose achievement, it is accompanied here by two other radio scripts, Return Journey and Conversation about Christmas, both dating from 1947.

Till hans mest kända dikter hör »Och döden skall icke längre råda« [»And Death Shall Have No Dominion«, 1933] - inkluderad i denna volym - och villanellen »Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night« [1952]. Dylan Thomas dog av alkoholförgiftning endast 39 år gammal.
Dylan Thomas' nostalgic account of his childhood Christmas in a Welsh town is one of his most popular works. A gorgeously illustrated new edition of this lyrical 1952 classic, featuring popular Swansea artist John Upton's illustrations of the very house Thomas grew up in on Cwmdonkin Drive, Swansea. -- Cyngor Llyfrau Cymru
