HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. ‘Though lovers be lost love shall not; And death shall have no dominion.’ As a child growing up in South Wales, Dylan Thomas was obsessed with words. In adulthood his literary talents and stormy personal life would both shock and captivate his contemporaries. Today, he is considered to be arguably the greatest Welsh poet of all time. This selection of his writings combines Thomas’s most beloved poems including ‘And Death Shall Have No Dominion’, ‘Fern Hill’ and ‘Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night’; his short story collection A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog; and the heart-warming classic tale ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’. Celebrated for his melodic and deeply emotive style, Thomas’s profound portrayal of love, death, memory and the human condition continues to strike a chord with twenty-first century readers.

Set in the author’s native Swansea in South Wales, the ten autobiographical stories in this much-loved collection chart his journey from boyhood – movingly and at times comically evoked in tales such as ‘The Peaches’ and ‘A Visit to Grandpa’s’ – to early adulthood. Along the way, in ‘Extraordinary Little Cough’, among others, the vicissitudes of adolescence and a burgeoning sexuality are explored with characteristic tenderness and candour, while ‘Where Tawe Flows’ and ‘One Warm Saturday’ affectionately document the evolution of the young writer’s literary sensibility. Young love, male friendship, death, religion – the gamut of youthful experience is here encapsulated, inflected throughout with Thomas’s typical humanity. Presented in this volume alongside the rest of the body of fiction produced by the Welsh poet in his short and turbulent life, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog (1940), which has proven to be second in popularity only to Thomas’s masterpiece, Under Milk Wood, demonstrates that he was as much a master of prose as he was of poetry.

A much loved and celebrated modern classic, Dylan Thomas originally wrote Under Milk Wood as a radio drama and it was first broadcast by the BBC in 1954. Since then, Thomas’s masterful and humorous depiction of his characters continues to entertain and resonate with readers today.

Ville-Juhani Sutinen on poiminut suomentamansa valikoiman kirjailijan koko uran varrelta. Näissä novelleissa kirjailija sukeltaa etenkin lapsuuteensa Walesin rannikolle, mutta ammentaa myös aikuisikänsä kokemuksista Lontoossa. Olennaisinta novelleissa on kuitenkin kertojaminän sisäinen maailma ja sadunomainen tyyli, jolla kirjailija kuvaa milloin öistä tivolia, milloin taas sängyllä ratsastavaa isoisää. Ville-Juhani Sutiselta on aiemmin ilmestynyt vuonna 2022 Finlandia-palkitun esseeteoksen ja muun runsaan kaunokirjallisen tuotannon lisäksi suomennos Gertrude Steinin romaanista Pariisi Ranska. Nyt ilmestyvä Taiteilijan omakuva nuoruuden koiravuosilta on ensimmäinen Dylan Thomasin novellien suomennosvalikoima.

With an Introduction and Notes by Sally Minogue? Dylan Thomas wrote some of the best-known and best-loved poems of the twentieth century, amongst them ‘Do not go gentle into that good night’, ‘Fern Hill’ and ‘The force that through the green fuse drives the flower’. This edition reproduces the Collected Poems 1934-1952 which the poet authorised just before his tragically early death at the age of 39 and which contains, as he said, ‘most of the poems I have written, and all, up to the present year, I wish to preserve’. His was a precocious talent: his first poem was published nationally at the age of 18, and his first collection, 18 Poems, was published when he was just 20. In spite of his early death, he therefore left behind a substantial and significant body of work, represented here. His poems cover the span of birth to death, while at their heart is a lyrical, joyful impulse that celebrates life. The Introduction and Notes set Thomas’s poetry in their cultural (including their Welsh) context and poetic tradition, and offer ways in to a poetry which is highly crafted, and rich in language and emotion.

Under Milk Wood is Dylan Thomas’s best-known and best-loved work, his radio play completed in 1953 at the very end of his life. Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog is his first collection solely of short stories, published in 1940. These two works show us his remarkable creative brilliance at the start and at the end of a highly productive writing life. Thomas described Under Milk Wood variously as ‘a play, an impression for voices, an entertainment out of the darkness’. It had its most famous incarnation as a radio play, broadcast in 1954, only months after its author’s death. This is the text used for that broadcast. Full of the comedy of human existence, it also strikes notes of poignancy and loss as we travel through twenty-four hours in the company of those who inhabit the ‘multifariously busy little town’. It is an affectionate vision of the ‘drinks and loves and quarrels and dreams and wishes’ of people very much like ourselves. Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog is a semi-autobiographical collection of stories set in and around the Swansea of Thomas’s youth. They are narratively engaging, full of a pleasure in ordinary existence, and an even greater pleasure in the power of the imagination.

Dylan Thomas föddes i Swansea i Wales 1914 och dog 1953 i New York.

This gathering of all Dylan Thomas's stories--ranging chronologically from the dark, almost surrealistic tales of Thomas's youth to such gloriously rumbustious celebrations of life as "A Child's Christmas in Wales" and "Adventures in the Skin Trade"--charts the progress of "The Rimbaud of Cwmdonkin Drive" toward his mastery of the comic idiom. Here, too, are stories originally written for radio and television and, in a short appendix, the schoolboy pieces first published in the Swansea Grammar School Magazine. A high point of the collection is Thomas's "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog," a vivid collage of memories from his Swansea childhood that combines the lyricism of his poetry with the sparkle and sly humor of Under Milk Wood. Also here is the fiction from Quite Early One Morning, a collection planned by Thomas shortly before his death. Altogether there are more than forty stories, providing a rich and varied literary feast and showing Dylan Thomas in all his intriguing variety-somber fantasist, joyous word-spinner, and irrepressible comedian of smalltown Wales.
