Many tasks in operations management require the solution of complex optimization problems. Problems in which decisions are taken sequentially over time can be modeled and solved by dynamic programming. Real-world dynamic programming problems, however, exhibit complexity that cannot be handled by conventional solution techniques. This complexity may stem from large state and solution spaces, huge sets of possible actions, non-convexities in the objective function, and uncertainty. In this book, three highly complex real-world problems from the domain of operations management are modeled and solved by newly developed solution techniques based on stochastic dynamic programming. First, the problem of optimally scheduling participating demand units in an energy transmission network is considered. These units are scheduled such that total cost of supplying demand for electric energy is minimized under uncertainty in demand and generation. Second, the integrated problem of investment in and optimal operations of a network of battery swap stations under uncertain demand and energy prices is modeled and solved. Third, the inventory control problem of a multi-channel retailer selling through independent sales channels is modeled and optimality conditions for replenishment policies of simple structure are proven. This book introduces efficient approximation techniques based on approximate dynamic programming (ADP) and extends existing proximal point algorithms to the stochastic case. The methods are applicable to a wide variety of dynamic programming problems of high dimension.

The most important task of the analytical chemist, aside from the acquisition of experimental data, is the coordination and interpretation of such data in terms of the qualitative and quantitative composition of the test substance. As in the old tale of the blind men and the elephant, a single observation or test, not considered in conjunction with others, may lead to entirely erroneous conclusions. On the other hand, mere in­ crease in the number of such tests, without regard to their need or to their relationship to each other, also may not suffice for drawing the correct inferences from the experimental evidence. The deductive reasoning which is usually associated with the analy­ tical chemist finds its greatest opportunity for application in the problems of cognition and recognition of carbon compounds. Since a rigid scheme of procedure tends to produce a corresponding rigidity of thought, the intent of the present book is to outline approaches which will minimize the chances of misinterpretation without restricting the analytical chemist in his choice of tests. The selection of subsequent tests or reactions should be governed by the results of the preceding ones rather than by an arbi­ trary list. The relationships of the various approaches (and the information derived from each) to the composition and constitution of the test sub­ stance are brought out in the discussion with the hope that they may serve as guide lines for such selection.

Probleme der Corporate-Identity-orientierten Unternehmenspolitik sind bis- her hauptsachlich im praxisorientierten Schrifttum eroertert worden; dabei werden oftmals nur Teilaspekte des unternehmensumfassenden Corporate- Identity-Gedankens berucksichtigt. Dies wird zum Anlass genommen, ein komplexes, integriertes Corporate-Identity-Planungskonzept auf Basis eines in sich stimmigen Begriffssystems zu entwickeln und einen Ansatz zur Auswahl von unternehmensinternen und -externen Cor- porate-Identity-Handlungsmoeglichkeiten zu erarbeiten. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird dem Corporate Advertising als einem we- sentlichen 'Corporate-Identity-Bestandteil geschenkt. Es werden Loesungsan- satze zur Planung des Corporate-Advertising-Budgets entwickelt und die Botschaftsgestaltung von Corporate-Advertising-Anzeigen einer empirischen, inhaltsanalytischen Untersuchung unterzogen. Da bisher fundierte Erkennt- nisse hinsichtlich des Beitrages eines Corporate Designs zu einer Corporate Identity fehlen, wird es zudem als notwendig erachtet, die durch ein Corpo- rate Design erzielbaren Wirkungen (aus psychologischer Sicht) zu begrun- den. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist von der Wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultat der Universitat Tubingen als Dissertation angenommen worden. Mein beson- derer Dank gilt meinem verehrten akademischen Lehrer, Herrn Professor Dr. Ralph Berndt.
