Agli inizi del Novecento in Italia si sviluppano movimenti di sinistra fortemente critici nei confronti del Partito Socialista, ritenuto inadeguato a difendere gli interessi dei lavoratori e troppo compromesso con la classe borghese. Ne fanno parte i nazionalisti, che sotto la guida di Corradini si collocano a sinistra; i futuristi, il cui partito su posizioni anarchiche, laiche, anticlericali; gli irredentisti, per i quali l'ampliamento dei confini alle "terre irredente" deve accompagnarsi a una riforma completa della struttura economica del Paese e dei rapporti di classe; i sindacalisti rivoluzionari, che hanno ben chiaro il primato della societ sullo Stato, del lavoro sulla propriet , e vogliono usare il sindacato come strumento rivoluzionario. Poi, naturalmente, ci sono D'Annunzio e Mussolini. Il primo trasformer questo amalgama di movimenti diversi in un progetto organico, che si incarna nell'impresa di fiume e nella Costituzione ideata insieme al sindacalista rivoluzionario Alceste de Ambris; il secondo, Mussolini, abbandona la battaglia del Poeta, si accorda con Giolitti per la resa di Fiume e, dopo l'inevitabile uscita di scena di D'Annunzio, si impadronisce di tutta l'immagine legata al fiumanesimo, si propone come erede del Poeta, ma ne tradisce tutti i valori di democrazia, libert e rivoluzione sociale. The third in a cycle of novels exploring the lives of the Italian bourgeoisie, The Triumph of Death was inspired by the author’s interpretation of the work of Friedrich Nietzsche and Walter Pater.
