Esempio di romanzo psicologico, nel quale la trama e l'intreccio cedono il posto all'introspezione della coscienza del protagonista, Giorgio Aurispa, nella cui mente si svolge l'intera vicenda romanzesca. Il romanzo, che apre con un passo dell'Al di l del bene e del male di Friedrich Nietzsche nell'esergo, sviluppa il tema del superomismo cos come interpretato dall'allora trentunenne d'Annunzio.

L'opera nasce come raccolta di canti, con temi diversi, che acquisiscono unitariet proprio in relazione all'elemento caratterizzante che il territorio. I personaggi sono presentati come impulsivi, irruenti e talvolta feroci. Come Verga, D'Annunzio si concentra sulle emozioni del popolo e sulle sue rivolte, ma alla descrizione delle rivendicazioni sociali preferisce studiare gli stati d'animo, le energie quasi primordiali che vengono sprigionate nel momento della protesta.

Uno dei momenti pi alti della produzione poetica dannunziana. E' una raccolta di 88 liriche di metro vario e costituisce la III parte delle "Laudi del Cielo, della Terra e degli Eroi", del 1904. Il superomismo, il panismo, il sensualismo vengono mirabilmente fusi dal particolare tono musicale, riconoscibile nella congerie di forme e temi.

Al centro delle vicende de Il Piacere c' uno dei molti alter ego fortemente autobiografici nati dalla penna dannunziana: Andrea Sperelli, esteta raffinato e coltissimo, discendente d'una famiglia nobile, estraneo alla barbarie dei tempi moderni e tutto dedito (come l'autore per tutta la sua esistenza) "a fare la propria vita come si fa un'opera d'arte".
