Üha enam paljastub Briti Raj'i pahupool. Autorist:Eric Arthur Blair, kirjanikunimega George Orwell, sündis 1903. aastal Briti Indias Motihari linnas. Ta kasvas üles Euroopa päritolu keskklassi perekonnas, snobismi rüütatud vaesuse keskel. Sellist majanduslikku olukorda mittearvestavat auahnust kutsus Orwell hiljem oma loomingus maata maaisanda mentaliteediks. Orwell omandas stipendiaadina hariduse Inglismaal Etoni kolledzhis, kus ta õppis muu hulgas Aldous Huxley käe all. Kolledzhi ajakirjas avaldas noormees oma esimesed kirjanduslikud katsetused. Kirjanikuks saamisest unistav Orwell töötas Briti impeeriumipolitsei ametnikuna Birmas, kus temast sai veendunud kolonialismivastane. Hiljem elas ta vaeste lihttööliste ja kerjuste seas Londoni agulites, töötas nõudepesijana Pariisi restoranides, rändas juhutööde otsinguil elukutseliste hulkurite seltsis mööda Inglismaa teid ning sõdis Hispaania kodusõja ajal antifashishtliku miilitsaväe ridades. Orwell suri 1950. aastal tuberkuloosi.

This book, first published in 1942, covers the whole field of wartime life and organization. Is the private ownership and control of industry holding up production? Are the burdens of war being shared equally by the whole community? How can individual liberty be reconciled with maximum efficiency? Are women taking their rightful share in the national effort? Does our literature and art reflect the spirit of an aroused and determined people? Have we a message which will win the oppressed peoples of Europe to our side? These questions are frankly discussed and positive suggestions are made.

Despite hailing from a comfortable family background, budding poet Gordon Comstock decides to declare war on money and all the middle-class trappings that wealth can buy. Working in a small bookshop and living in a bedsit in London, he dreams of completing an ambitious poem in rhyme royal and devoting his life to literature. But when poverty begins to damage his self-esteem and taint his worldview, and his romantic and professional lives start falling apart, will Gordon be able to uphold his anti-money principles, or will he succumb to the lure of lucre and everything he stands against? First published in 1936, Keep the Aspidistra Flying is the author’s third novel, and one of his most outspoken works of social criticism. Partly autobiographical, it sits alongside Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four as a reminder of Orwell’s lucid narrative style and his abilities as a politically and socially engaged writer.

Animal farm is a dystopian allegorical novella. It reflects events leading up to and during the Stalin era before world War II. Orwell, being a democratic socialist, was a critic of Joseph Stalin and was against Moscow-directed Stalinism. The novel addresses not only the corruption of the revolution by its leaders but also how wickedness, indifference, ignorance, greed and myopia destroy any possibility of a utopia. While the novel portrays corrupt leadership as the flaw in revolution, though not the Act of revolution itself, it also shows how potential ignorance and indifference to problems within a revolution could allow horrors to happen if smooth transition to a people's government is not effected. Time magazine chose the book as one of the 100 Best English-language novels (1923 to 2005). It was also placed at no. 31 on the modern library list of best 20th century novels in English.

George Orwell's first novel 'Burmese Days, ' presents a devastating picture of British colonial rule, inspired by his experiences in the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. The story describes both indigenous corruption and imperial bigotry. John Flory is a white timber-merchant in 1920s in Burma. Disillusioned by imperial life, Flory defies orthodoxy and befriends Indian Dr. Veraswami. The doctor is being pursued by a corrupt magistrate, U Po Kyin, who is orchestrating his downfall. The only thing that can save his reputation is membership of the all-white Club, and Flory is in a position to help. Flory's life is also upended by the arrival of beautiful Parisian Elizabeth Lackersteen, who offers an escape from loneliness and the deceit of colonial life. 'Burmese Days' is a spectacular examination of the debasing effect of empire on occupied and occupier

One of the BBC's '100 Novels That Shaped Our World' HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. ‘Big Brother is Watching You.’ Winston Smith rewrites history. It’s his job. Hidden away in the Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, he helps the Party, and the omnipresent Big Brother, control the people of Oceania. But the notebook he’s begun to write in is against the rules – in fact, the Thought Police could arrest him simply for having it. Despite the danger, a seed of rebellion has begun to grow in Winston’s heart – one that could have devastating consequences. In George Orwell’s final novel, he explores a dystopian future in which a totalitarian government controls the actions, thoughts and even emotions of its citizens. Its lasting popularity is testament to Orwell’s powerful prose, and is a passionate warning for today.
