My apprenticeship as a fitter and turner at the Newport Workshops from 1944 to 1949 were no ordinary years. World War II was in a critical stage, and the workshops were manufacturing a huge range of armaments, as well as keeping the VR railways running. This book is not only about my apprenticeship, but is a history of how Victorians coped with life, particularly during the war years of 1944 to 1945. When the war ended in 1945, a campaign by the unions for a 40-hour workweek began almost immediately. This resulted in many strikes, during which the railway system was shut down. As an apprentice, I was not on strike, but like many other Victorians, I could not get to work. Because of this, I had to make up for the 38 days lost during my apprenticeship, extending it to 1949, when I finally completed my five years and became a tradesman fitter and turner. The 40-hour work week was eventually won in 1947. The war and strikes interrupted my apprenticeship, but through them I gained valuable lessons in politics, human relations and newspaper reporting. During my apprenticeship, my weekends, holidays and annual leaves were very exciting times for me, hiking, and skiing with the Rover Scouts and Youth Hostels Association, which I felt were a very important adjunct to my apprenticeship, because I learned a number of extra skills, learning to ski and carpentry skills making a pair of skis.
As well as the author's story of his travels, this book has another function - a comprehensive TRAVEL GUIDE for the present-day backpacker and tourist. It contains various headings, icons, maps and indexes that provide information about travel and accommodations in towns, cities and localities of interest. There have been many changes since the author visited these countries, but the main historical sights of churches. museums, famous buildings and landscape are unchanged except, sadly, for the receding glaciers. This book is about young Australians who ventured abroad in the early 1950s. We travelled by steamship to and from the UK. We were British citizens travelling on British passports and once we stepped ashore in the UK we were accorded all of the benefits the English people enjoyed. In particular the free UK National Health Scheme. There were no work restrictions, and the author easily found work in his trade of fining and turning and had no trouble entering a busy and exciting English social life. While abroad, the author completed five backpacking tours. Three were tours of around two months duration in Europe, Scotland and Scandinavia and two were short tours in England. All were very successful with accommodation provided mostly by the worldwide Youth Hostels Association. The main modes of travel between destinations were by train and hitchhiking, but many other means of transport had to be used ranging from motorcycle, coach and aeroplane. The author skied for three wonderful weeks in Switzerland in the prime ski resorts of Zermatt and Grindelwald.

In 1951 the author left Australia on a working and backpacking holiday abroad. On his first backpacking tour through Austria in early 1952 he heard of the death of King George VI. He realised that the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II would occur in 1953 so he planned to be in London for the epic event. After returning to England for his next backpacking tour in October 1952, he found work in his trade and full board in London. His wish to join in the social life of London was realised when he joined the Young Conservative Association (YCA). So began a very enjoyable busy, social life with the YCA and that of being a Londoner. The ballet, music, the movies and stage, were his main interests in London. The greatest show of all was the Coronation and the lead up seeing the street decorations and grandstands going up for the great day on 2nd June 1953, when the author watched the fantastic Coronation Procession from a reserved seat in a grandstand in the East Carriage Road. The eleven months that the author spent living and working in London had a great influence on his life and his love of London and its people that endures to the present day. This book is a history of London and its peoples during the Coronation year.

World-famous medium Gordon Smith is well known for giving powerful messages from people's loved ones on the other side. Very often it's not just human friends and family who come through - the animals who have been close to us in life also continue to visit us after death. In this extraordinary book, Gordon recounts some of the remarkable experiences that people have had with animals in the spirit world and in our world. They include moving accounts of dogs who know intuitively when their owners are coming home, pets who saved their owners' lives and animals who have found ways of proving they are still with their families after death. Throughout the book, Gordon shares his own experiences with his springer spaniel 'Cheeky' Charlie, who came into his life unexpectedly, completely overturning it and showing Gordon the beauty of trust, patience and unconditional love. Through these amazing stories, Gordon shows just how deeply animals care for their human families and the profound understanding they have of the world around them. This is a repackage of The Amazing Power of Animals (978-1-4019-2325-9)

Volume 18 corrects some old data entries in previous volumes, provides additional ship movement data and adds new information in the "General" sections to help clarify the context of the war--especially important here in these early months. The bulk of the new material concerns Imperial Japanese Navy ship movements as Japan consolidates her hold on Chinese ports and eliminates French Indochina as a source of supplies for the Nationalist Chinese. Japan begins an extensive initial buildup of naval vessels as she prepares for the fateful move to attack the US Navy and extend the Japanese Empire into Malaya, Borneo and the Dutch East Indies. In addition, we add new data on the Royal Indian Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy, and we expand the data on the following events: The Battle of the River Plate, Fleet Air Arm actions off Norway, and naval events off Ethiopia and Somalia.
