He considers the steam engine to be the 19th century's most defining emblem and examines its abrupt appearance. According to Wells, the pace of land movement will fundamentally alter human culture. According to Wells, there will be four social strata created by technology in the 20th century. He says that families in this class will live in well-run homes without a need for housekeepers. Jonathan H. B. Wells contends in Democracy and Other Essays on Statecraft that the term "democracy" is vague and just refers to the denial of a certain person or individuals' ability to act on behalf of the population at large. The growing range and precision of the rifle and field gun establish the "new battle." Wells predicts that war will become less "dramatic" and more "monstrous." He expects that by the year 2000, many multilingual societies would speak languages like Spanish and Russian as a second language. Wells believes that due to the interconnectedness of the economy, culture, and politics, "a New Republic" would eventually rule the world. He discussed the future of society and how authorities will utilize science to "euthanize the weak and the sensual" in Anticipations.

H. G. Wells wrote and published the book, Ann Veronica a modern love story in 1909. It talks of Ann Veronica Stanley's uprising against her middle-class father's strict patriarchal control as "a young woman of about two-and-twenty." The New Woman's issue in modern society is dramatized in the book. Except for a vacation to the mountains, it takes place in Victorian-era London and its surroundings. Ann Veronica provides snapshots of the British women's suffrage struggle and includes a chapter that was motivated by the suffragettes' failed effort to storm Parliament in 1908. The story revolves around her father who forbids her from attending a ball, she leaves home to live independently. She borrows money from an older man to study and falls in love with Capes, the laboratory's "demonstrator". Due to the heroine's feminist sympathies and the romance Wells was having with Amber Reeves, the woman who served as the inspiration for Ann Veronica, the book caused a sensation when it was released in the autumn of 1909. Even though the book now seems fairly mild-mannered, Ann Veronica was criticized as "capable of poisoning the minds of people who read it" by The Spectator in its day as being a scandalous work.

When we look at all the main religions, and patriotic, moral and traditional systems in which human beings are sheltering today, they appear to be in a mutually destructive movement, like the houses and palaces of some vast, sprawling city overtaken by a landslide. To the very last moment, despite falling rafters and bulging walls, men and women cling to the houses in which they were born and to the ways to which they have grown accustomed. At the most, they scuttle into the house opposite or the house next door. They accuse each other of straining the partitions and overtaxing the material; they accuse other people of secret mining operations. They cannot believe such turmoil can continue. The city is still sound enough, they say, if it is not too severely tried. At any pause in the wreckage, they exclaim, 'What did I tell you? It's all over. Now we can feel safe again.'When they finally realise the inevitability and universality of the disaster, most of them have become too frantic to entertain the possibility of one supreme engineering effort that might yet intercept those seeping waters that have released the whole mountainside to destruction. Such a salvaging of our species is still possible if we spend all our energy and effort on truly uniting mankind. That is as much as the most hopeful mind can say.
