Whether it is attainable, how it can be attained, and what sort of world a world at peace will have to be. Today the phrase 'New World Order' evokes dystopian visions of enforcing a uniform international peace, Big Brother surveillance and legal order through a system of collective security and stringent control of a brainwashed citizenry. H. G. Wells called for the complete socialisation of the world. He vocally criticised Soviet Communism and European Fascism, but he embraced certain measures these systems implemented, like the abolition of private property and the management of youth. He believed such courses of action were leading the world towards collectivisation and the unity of mankind. If we want true peace and prosperity to reign, Wells argued, there is only one way to bring it about: subsuming all human affairs under a single government and the establishment of a world state. Wells laid the groundwork for a 'paradise on Earth' in this little book from 1940. His visions were apparently taken seriously by powerful financial and political circles that have gradually put them into practice over the last eighty years. Wells did not merely make predictions. There is little doubt that he was a major player in creating the current New World Order.
Scientific and Horrific Stories is a collection of short fiction by H. G. Wells. Despite his humble beginnings as the son of English servants, H. G. Wells would become one of the most revered writers of his day. His stories of adventure, utopia, and terror inspired such vastly different figures as Vladimir Nabokov, Winston Churchill, Jorge Luis Borges, and Sinclair Lewis. Many of his novels have been adapted for film, theater, radio, and television, including The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), and The War of the Worlds (1898). Scientific and Horrific Stories includes twenty-six tales from across Wells’ career. “The Chronic Argonauts,” written while Wells was recuperating from an illness with friends in Stoke-on-Trent, is a story of time travel set in rural Wales that predates his beloved The Time Machine by seven years. “Æpyornis Island” is a terrifying tale of greed and survival that originally appeared in an 1894 issue of the Pall Mall Budget. Tasked with finding rare Aepyornis eggs, a rugged Englishman named Butcher ventures to a remote swamp on the island of Madagascar. When one of the eggs unexpectedly hatches, he is left stranded and at the mercy of a vicious creature that was believed to be extinct. In “The Diamond Maker,” which also appeared in the Pall Mall Budget, a destitute man tells a wealthy businessman about his years as a maker of artificial diamonds, a time of great promise that ultimately led to his downfall. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of H. G. Wells’ Scientific and Horrific Stories is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Le roman est adapt plusieurs fois: pour la radio (dont une version d'Orson Welles qui a d fray la chronique en 1938), en jeux de r le, en bande dessin e, en quatre longs-m trages et plusieurs s ries.
Originally published in December 1897, 'The War of the Worlds' is an early thrilling science fiction novel by H. G. Wells, an English writer. The novel begins with humans watching the skies closely, fascinated with the worlds beyond Earth's atmosphere. As astronomers and scientists hone in on some bizarre occurrences on Mars, their observations soon become terrifying-humans are not the only intelligent beings, and those other beings are also curious about humans. Alien spacecraft start crashing into England and as Martians emerge from the ships, they begin intimidating the Earth and bringing destruction with every step. Cities are burned, families are torn apart, and human military power proves weak in the face of an unknown enemy. This story is about surviving in the face of destruction, the human desire to protect one's home and loved ones, and a fascinating glance at how a harmful alien invasion could play out on Earth.
Adrift in a dinghy, Edward Prendick, the single survivor from the good ship Lady Vain, is rescued by a vessel carrying a profoundly unusual cargo - a menagerie of savage animals. Tended to recovery by their keeper Montgomery, who gives him dark medicine that tastes of blood, Prendick soon finds himself stranded upon an uncharted island in the Pacific with his rescuer and the beasts. Here, he meets Montgomery's master, the sinister Dr. Moreau - a brilliant scientist whose notorious experiments in vivisection have caused him to abandon the civilised world. It soon becomes clear he has been developing these experiments - with truly horrific results. A shipwreck in the South Seas, a palmy paradise where a mad doctor conducts vile experiments, animals that become human & then "beastly" in ways they never were before - -it's the stuff of high adventure. It's also a parable about Darwinian theory, a social satire in the vein of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels & a bloody tale of horror. As Wells himself wrote: "The Island of Dr. Moreau is an exercise in youthful blasphemy. Now & then, though I rarely admit it, the universe projects itself towards me in a hideous grimace. It grimaced that time, & I did my best to express my vision of the aimless torture in creation."

The Time Machine by H. G. Wells is a science fiction classic, which lends itself well to visualization. This version, illustrated by Yoann Laurent-Rouault, an illustrator master who graduated from the Beaux-Arts, and published in the international literary collection Memoria Books, is a reference on the time travel theme. Wells transports us in the year 802 701, in a society made up of the "Elois", who live peacefully in a kind of big Garden of Eden, eating fruits and sleeping high up, while underground lives another species, also descending from men, the "Morlocks", who do not stand the light anymore, living in the dark for too long now. At night, they return to the surface, going back up by the wells, in order to kidnap some Elois that they eat; these last became livestock unknowingly. In The Time Machine, made into a movie several times, the last of them in 2002 by Simon Wells, the great-grandson of H. G. Wells, time is both a pretext to move the class struggle and warn... and also, in a way, a full character, who fascinates, arbitrates, transcends... The illustrations come to reinforce the time travel and provide a new experience to the reader.
