Psychologists believe there isn't one "right" way to study the way people think or behave. For example, some psychologists might attribute a certain behavior to biological factors such as genetics while another psychologist might consider early childhood experiences to be a more likely explanation for the behavior. Because psychologists emphasize various points within psychology in their research & analysis of behavior, there are 5 different viewpoints in psychology are known as perspectives. Biological Perspective is the application of the principles of biology to the study of mental processes & behavior. Psychodynamic Perspective is an approach to psychology that studies the psychological forces underlying human behavior, feelings, emotions, & how they may relate to early childhood experience. Behavior Perspective focuses on observable, overt behaviors that are learned from the environment. Cognitive Perspective examines internal mental processes such as problem solving, memory, & language. Cognition refers to thinking & memory processes, & cognitive development refers to long-term changes in these processes. Humanistic Perspective focuses on maximum human potential & achievement.

Psychology is one of the most fascinating fields of study. A field as broad as psychology, which stretches from the study of brain cells to that of prison cells, is an active, argumentative, and exciting adventure that offers opportunities in science, practice, and social policy. Most of the pressing economic and social issues of our generation, such as the environment, health needs, poverty, and violence, will only be alleviated if we understand the ways in which people create or creatively solve the problems that we bring upon ourselves. Psychological testing, assessment and treatment is the discipline of scientific psychology devoted to the study of a given human subject (or group of subjects) in a specific applied field (clinical, educational, work, etc.) by means of scientific tools (tests and other measurement instruments), with the purpose of answering clients' demands that require scientific operations such as describing, diagnosing, predicting, explaining or changing the behaviour of that subject. We hope this encyclopedia will provide useful information that will help psychologists, psychiatrists, counselor & others understand this fascinating field and its opportunities.

The sophisticated measurement of human personality inescapably depends on the use of a variety of concepts to provide trait definitions and entails the application of various methods of observation & evaluation. Personality theorists and researchers seek to define & to understand the diversity of human traits, the many ways people have of thinking & perceiving and learning & emoting. Such nonmaterial human dimensions, types, & attributes are constructs-in this case, inferences drawn from observed behavior. Personality assessment, the measurement of personal characteristics. Assessment is an end result of gathering information intended to advance psychological theory & research & to increase the probability that wise decisions will be made in applied settings. The approach taken by the specialist in personality assessment is based on the assumption that much of the observable variability in behavior from one person to another results from differences in the extent to which individuals possess particular underlying personal characteristics. The assessment specialist seeks to define these traits, to measure them objectively, & to relate them to socially significant aspects of behavior.

Depression is a major health problem that affects many older people, causing significant distress, disability, exacerbating existing medical conditions & resulting in earlier death & higher use of services. In depressed older people, depressed mood may be less commonly reported, while somatic symptoms (loss of appetite, lack of energy, irritability, sleeplessness, worrying, aches & pains) are more prominent. Elderly depressed people are more likely to have psychotic delusions than younger people. This profile has prompted the development of a separate instrument, the Geriatric Depression Scale, to measure depression in older people. Some aetiological pathways are also different in older people: in addition to psychosocial and genetic factors, late-life depression is also associated with cerebrovascular disease & its associated risk factors (high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, increased serum lipid levels). The evidence for the effectiveness of a range of proposed treatments for depression in older people, including medical, psychological & alternative therapies & lifestyle changes. It is hoped that the book provides useful information that will help psychologists & psychiatrists.
