Daisy Miller and An International Episode

Daisy Miller and An International Episode

Henry James

'an inscrutable combination of audacity and innocence' Young Daisy Miller perplexes, amuses, and charms her stiff but susceptible fellow-American, Frederick Winterbourne. Is she innocent or corrupt? Has he lived too long in Europe to judge her properly? Amid the romantic scenery of Lake Geneva and Rome, their lively, precarious relationship develops to a climax in the Colosseum at midnight. The tale gave James his first popular success, yet some compatriots detected treachery in its portrayal of young American womanhood. James responded with 'An International Episode', which exposes a couple of English gentlemen to the charm and wit of American sisters in Newport, RI and then in London. Independently read, these short masterpieces probe the manners and morals of a newly emergent transatlantic world. Together they shed light on each other, demonstrating the range of James's own manners, from sharp satire and buoyant comedy to complex, perhaps even tragic, pathos. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Georgina's reasons Henry James Henry James's 1884 tale "Georgina's Reasons" presents readers with an insoluble hermeneutic problem regarding its heroine's motivation. This essay applies four interpretative frameworks - theological, political, scientific and geographical - to the question of the heroine's "reasons." Each way of interpreting the story aligns with a genre of nineteenth-century fiction: sensation novel, New Woman novel, naturalism and the international tale. The problem of the heroine's motivation thus provides an occasion for consideration of the stylistic choices available to James in the mid-1880s, and of the capacities and limitations of each style for developing his chosen subject - a woman whose unconventional and destructive behaviour defies rational understanding. American author Henry James is regarded as one of the foremost figures in the genre that some critics call "trans-Atlantic" literature. His fiction often explores the tension between traditional European values and the brash, assertive national character of America. This epistolary novella captures the impressions of American visitors in Europe in a series of letters. As part of our mission to publish great works of literary fiction and nonfiction, Sheba Blake Publishing Corp. is extremely dedicated to bringing to the forefront the amazing works of long dead and truly talented authors.

It was always rather quiet at Cocker's while the contingent from Ladle's and Thrupp's and all the other great places were at luncheon, or, as the young men used vulgarly to say, while the animals were feeding. She had forty minutes in advance of this to go home for her own dinner; and when she came back and one of the young men took his turn there was often half an hour during which she could pull out a bit of work or a book-a book from the place where she borrowed novels, very greasy, in fine print and all about fine folks, at a ha'penny a day. This sacred pause was one of the numerous ways in which the establishment kept its finger on the pulse of fashion and fell into the rhythm of the larger life. It had something to do, one day, with the particular flare of importance of an arriving customer, a lady whose meals were apparently irregular, yet whom she was destined, she afterwards found, not to forget. The girl was blas e; nothing could belong more, as she perfectly knew, to the intense publicity of her profession; but she had a whimsical mind and wonderful nerves; she was subject, in short, to sudden flickers of antipathy and sympathy, red gleams in the grey, fitful needs to notice and to "care," odd caprices of curiosity. She had a friend who had invented a new career for women-that of being in and out of people's houses to look after the flowers.

"I would in a moment if I hadn't to look out for another matter too." And he renewed his attention to his watch. "I mean getting straight at my American, the party I just mentioned------" But she had already taken him up. "You too have an American and a 'party, ' and yours also motors down----?" "Mr. Breckenridge Bender." Lord John named him with a shade of elation. She gaped at the fuller light "You know my Breckenridge?--who I hoped was coming for me " Lord John as freely, but more gaily, wondered. "Had he told you so?"
