Iliad VI makes ideal reading for a student approaching the epic for the first time. Amongst other episodes it includes the meeting of Diomedes and Glaukos in battle, which throws light on the ethics of epic warfare; and the touching scene of Hektor's final parting from his wife Andromache and baby son Astyanax. This illustrated edition includes text with notes on the facing page, introduction and select bibliography of further reading. There are also short appendices introducing the forms of Homeric dialect with their Attic equivalents, prepositional usages in Homer, Homeric formulae, and scansion of the hexameter. A consolidated vocabulary and glossary of proper names follow - in sum all the basic material needed for early Greek learners to tackle their first book of Homer with confidence and understanding.

'The best modern prose translation of The Iliad' Robin Lane Fox, The TimesThe first of the world's great tragedies, The Iliad centres on the pivotal four days towards the end of the ten-year war between the Greeks and the Trojans. In a series of dramatic set pieces, it follows the story of the humiliation of Achilleus at the hands of Agamemnon and his slaying of Hektor: a barbarous act with repercussions that ultimately determine the fate of Troy. The Iliad not only paints an intimate picture of individual experience, but also offers a universal perspective in which human loss and suffering are set against a vast and unpitying divine background where fickle, quarrelsome gods decide the fate of men. Translated with an Introduction by Martin Hammond

"It is always a real pleasure to read a translation which adheres to one basic, important principle, to reflect faithfully what the poet says. Professor Cook's translation does just that.... This is a literal translation, following the original line for line. These lines scan easily and move rapidly, thus reproducing one of the special delights of Homeric style.... Recommended highly." --Francis D. Lazenby, Classics Department, University of Notre Dame

The epic tale of wrath and redemption. Here is a new Loeb Classical Library edition of Homer’s stirring heroic account of the Trojan war and its passions. The eloquent and dramatic epic poem captures the terrible anger of Achilles, “the best of the Achaeans,” over a grave insult to his personal honor and relates its tragic result: a chain of consequences that proves devastating for the Greek forces besieging Troy, for noble Trojans, and for Achilles himself. The poet gives us compelling characterizations of his protagonists as well as a remarkable study of the heroic code in antiquity. The works attributed to Homer include the two oldest and greatest European epic poems, the Odyssey and Iliad. These texts have long stood in the Loeb Classical Library with a faithful and literate prose translation by A. T. Murray. William F. Wyatt has brought the Loeb’s Iliad up to date, with a rendering that retains Murray’s admirable style but is worded for today’s readers. The two-volume edition includes an Introduction, helpful notes, and an index.

The hero’s journey home from war. Here is a new Loeb Classical Library edition of the resplendent epic tale of Odysseus’ long journey home from the Trojan War and the legendary temptations, delays, and perils he faced at every turn. Homer’s classic poem features Odysseus’ encounters with the beautiful nymph Calypso; the queenly but wily Circe; the Lotus-eaters, who fed his men their memory-stealing drug; the man-eating, one-eyed Cyclops; the Laestrygonian giants; the souls of the dead in Hades; the beguiling Sirens; the treacherous Scylla and Charybdis. Here, too, is the hero’s faithful wife, Penelope, weaving a shroud by day and unraveling it by night, in order to thwart the numerous suitors attempting to take Odysseus’ place.
