Howard Ensign Evans was a brilliant ethologist and systematist for whom the joy of science included lying on his belly in some remote location, digging out and diagramming a wasp’s nest. During his career, Evans described over 900 species and authored more than a dozen books, both technical and popular, on a wide range of entomological and natural history subjects. Upon his death in 2002, he left behind an unfinished manuscript, intended as an update (though not a revision) of his classic 1966 work, The Comparative Ethology and Evolution of the Sand Wasps. Kevin O’Neill, Evans’s former student and coauthor, has completed and enlarged Evans’s manuscript to provide coverage of all sand-wasp tribes in Evan’s earlier book. The result is a tribe-by-tribe, species-by-species review of studies of the Bembicinae that have appeared over the last four decades. The Sand Wasps: Natural History and Behavior already has been hailed by specialists as a new bible for those working on solitary wasps and an essential reference for scientists more broadly interested in insect behavioral evolution.

As the world's leading authority on wasps, Howard Ensign Evans' lifelong study of this creature was only one aspect of his life as an acclaimed scientist and author. For readers, he illuminated the otherworldly lives of humble creatures in such popular books as "Life on a Little-Known Planet", "Wasp Farm", and "Pioneer Naturalists". Evans was a master entomologist who seems only to have been truly comfortable in places where the bugs called; there he found his beauty, his magic and his poetry. In this collection, which he completed just before his death at 83, it appears Evans knew all 900,000 species of his gems that to others were only insects, along with the lowly magpie and the birds of Australia as well. Edward O. Wilson, one of the world's preeminent biologists, is the author of more than twenty-five books, including Sociobiology, the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Ants, and the best-selling novel Anthill. A professor emeritus at Harvard University, he lives in Lexington, Massachusetts.
Naturalist's Years in the Rocky Mountains
Acclaimed author and entomologist Howard E. Evans offers sharply-etched portraits of the remarkable creatures he encountered every day during his years living in the Rockies. In A Naturalist's Years in the Rocky Mountains, twenty elegant essays examine the behavior of these various creatures--from hummingbirds to bumblebees, thatcher ants to wrens, owls to woodrats to wasps--and the remarkable ways in which they have adapted to their world. This naturalist author clearly recognizes that the lives of these species are the threads that weave together the natural world, and he warns that the loss of any one species inevitably diminishes all others--including our own. Best of all, though, Howard Ensign Evans has never lost his sense of wonder, and these pages are sure to evoke a sense of delight and curiosity in the reader as well.
