Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, poet, playwright, translator and popularizer of Russian literature in the West. His first major publication, a short story collection entitled A Sportsman's Sketches (1852), was a milestone of Russian realism, and his novel Fathers and Sons (1862) is regarded as one of the major works of 19th-century fiction. Turgenev was impressed with German Central-European society, and believed that Russia could best improve itself by imitating the West. He first made his name with A Sportsman's Sketches, also known as Sketches From a Hunter's Album; or, Notes of a Hunter. He wrote several short novels like The Diary of a Superfluous Man, Faust, and The Lull. In them Turgenev expressed the anxieties and hopes of Russians of his generation.

V nastojaschee izdanie vkljucheny rannie proizvedenija I. S. Turgeneva, v kotorykh raskryvajutsja vazhnejshie motivy ego tvorchestva - sudby, dolga, odinochestva, poiska schastja i dr. V nikh projavilsja i prisuschij Turgenevu podkhod k raskrytiju vnutrennego mira personazhej, kotoryj pozzhe poluchil nazvanie "tajnogo psikhologizma". "Poet dolzhen byt psikhologom, - govoril Turgenev, - no tajnym: on dolzhen znat i chuvstvovat korni javlenij, no predstavljaet tolko samye javlenija - v ikh rastsvete ili uvjadanii". Chuvstvo odinochestva, otchajanija otlichaet turgenevskikh "lishnikh ljudej" - geroev, nesposobnykh najti primenenie svoim silam, znanijam i talantu. No oschuschenie bezyskhodnosti svojstvenno ne tolko individualistam i buntarjam, no i malenkomu cheloveku. Tak, v povesti "Mumu", napisannoj Turgenevym na osnove realnykh sobytij, lichnaja drama Gerasima podnimaetsja do urovnja obschechelovecheskoj tragedii. Ne sluchajno I. S. Aksakov schital obraz Gerasima "olitsetvoreniem russkogo naroda, ego strashnoj sily i nepostizhimoj krotosti".

V etikh povestjakh Turgenev issleduet samye temnye ugolki chelovecheskoj dushi, stalkivaja svoikh geroev s misticheskimi i sverkhestestvennymi javlenijami, bud to prizrak, vampir ili dazhe to, chemu trudno najti naimenovanie. Molodoj Arkadij Kirsanov vozvraschaetsja domoj posle vypuska iz universiteta. Ego, k bolshomu neudovolstviju ottsa i djadi, soprovozhdaet strannyj drug - Evgenij Bazarov, kotoryj "ne sklonjaetsja ni pered kakimi avtoritetami, kotoryj ne prinimaet ni odnogo printsipa na veru". Roman Turgeneva posle svoej publikatsii v 1862 godu potrjas rossijskoe obschestvo: starykh i molodykh reaktsionerov, romantikov i radikalov. V to zhe vremja on zavoeval priznanie Tolstogo i Dostoevskogo, Flobera, Mopassana i Genri Dzhejmsa za samobytnyj jazyk i psikhologicheskuju pronitsatelnost - i po sej den prodolzhaet ostavatsja stol zhe svezhim i otkrovennym. Glavnyj geroj znamenitogo tsikla rasskazov Ivana Turgeneva "Zapiski okhotnika" molodoj barin, puteshestvuet po blizlezhaschim derevnjam i delitsja istorijami o prirode i zhizni pomeschikov i krestjan. Udivitelno jarkie i obemnye kharaktery russkikh ljudej slovno vyrastajut iz rodnoj prirody, estestvennym obrazom prodolzhaja rossijskij landshaft. Kritiki i chitateli vysoko otsenili masterstvo Turgeneva kak khudozhnika slova i mastera tonkogo psikhologizma.
"Ottsy i deti" - znamenityj roman Ivana Turgeneva, opublikovannyj v 1862 godu. Eto proizvedenie stalo odnim iz naibolee znachimykh v russkoj literature veka. Glavnaja tema romana - protivopostavlenie starogo i novogo pokolenij, konflikt mezhdu ottsami i ikh detmi. Osnovnoe protivostojanie sosredotocheno vokrug dvukh personazhej - Evgenija Bazarova i Nikolaja Petrovicha Kirsanova. Evgenij Bazarov - predstavitel novogo pokolenija, molodoj, ratsionalnyj i skepticheski nastroennyj k traditsijam i idejam svoego vremeni. On propoveduet nauchnyj podkhod k zhizni i otvergaet starye idealy i tsennosti. Naprotiv, Nikolaj Petrovich Kirsanov - vzroslyj muzhchina, priverzhenets traditsij i zemlevladelets. On predstavljaet staroe pokolenie, kotoroe ne gotovo prinjat novye idei i vyzovy. Konflikt mezhdu predstaviteljami "ottsov" i "detej" stanovitsja emotsionalnym, intellektualnym i ideologicheskim sjuzhetom romana. Roman okazal glubokoe vlijanie na razvitie obschestvennogo myshlenija i kultury svoego vremeni.
Turgenev’s first major publication, Memoirs of a Hunter is a series of tales based largely on the author’s own experiences while hunting on his mother’s estate of Spasskoye, where he became aware of the iniquities of the system of serfdom and the privations and indignities suffered by the Russian peasantry. Told from the perspective of a dispassionate, observing narrator, the stories in this volume are concerned with the relationship between landowner and labourer, presenting a vivid and moving portrait of life in the era before the emancipation of the serfs in 1861 – a watershed whose advent some believe was hastened by Turgenev’s sympathetic depiction of the ordinary folk of rural Russia. Originally published individually in the St Petersburg journal Sovremennik before appearing as a single volume in 1852, and presented here in a masterful new translation by Michael Pursglove, this landmark collection of stories established the literary reputation of the author, who considered it his most significant contribution to Russian literature, and is universally regarded as a milestone in the Russian realist tradition.
Paren, otritsajuschij vsjo na svete - no kto on bez nigilizma? Genij, uchjonyj, revoljutsioner, novyj chelovek...
Sbornik Ivana Sergeevicha Turgeneva predstavlen v serii "Detskaja biblioteka", gde sobrany luchshie proizvedenija otechestvennoj i mirovoj literatury dlja detej ot 5 do 16 let. Eto folklor i literaturnye skazki, stikhi, rasskazy vydajuschikhsja pisatelej-klassikov. Kniga soderzhit takie izvestnye povesti: "Asja", "Pervaja ljubov", "Veshnie vody". Chto ikh obedinjaet? Vospominanija o samykh iskrennikh i silnykh chuvstvakh.
The author of masterful short stories, plays, novellas and novels, Ivan Turgenev seemed to have a particular gift for writing about nature and about social iniquities. He also seemed to have a unique ability for attracting controversy to himself, be it because of his views (he was thrown in prison for the obituary he wrote for Gogol) or his actions (philandering, possibly plagiarism) or inaction (cowardice during a fire on a boat). We give him our full bilingual treatment, with English and accented Russian texts running side by side on adjoining pages. It is a perfect introduction to the great author's work, in English, Russian, or both. Most of the text selections are short, which is excellent for language learning.
