J. I. Packer

The Collected Shorter Writings of J. I. Packer contain the majority of shorter pieces published by J. I. Packer over the past thirty years. The articles included in this four-volume set range from short devotional pieces published in church-sponsored journals, to opinion articles for popular journals like Christianity Today, to major articles for scholarly journals. Luther, Calvin, Cranfield, Whitefield, Simeon, Martyn Lloyd-Jones and Francis Schaeffer are all theologians who Packer has admired. Packer explores the lives and work of these influential Christians and the issues that motivated and inspired them into action, including the authority of Scripture, justification, the glory of God and the hope of heaven. This book concludes with Packer outlining current trends in church history, the state of British theology in the twentieth-century and the theological challenges now facing evangelicalism. J. I. Packer is Board of Governors' Professor of Theology at Regent College, Vancouver. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers and apologists for Christianity in the twentieth century. He is author of numerous books, including Knowing God, Rediscovering Holiness and Concise Theology: A Guide to Historic Beliefs.

What is the nature of the church? How should members behave toward one another? What does Christian unity mean? Packer explores these issues along with topics such as the celebration of the Lord's Supper. From dealing with the church as it is, Packer moves on to examine the church as it should be, discussing revival and renewal in a church context. Evangelism is then addressed both from an apologetic and a theological angle that reflects on the content of evangelism and the scope of the proclamation. Evangelism should lead into Christian living, and thus the final group of articles consists of reflections on sanctification, morality, leisure and conscience. Here Packer also addresses the issue of what to do if God seems distant. Throughout the volume readers will be both informed and encouraged in their faith. J. I. In this collection of articles, Packer sets out his beliefs about the authority of Scripture and the principles that should be applied when interpreting it. Important topics such as the adequacy of human language and the authority of reason and the Scripture's own view of itself are considered. Packer then applies his principles of interpretation to such controversial topics as creation, the role of women and eschatology. In the final section, Packer turns his attention to pastoral leaders and the importance of correct and responsible expository preaching. J. I. Trinitarian theology and the uniqueness of Jesus Christ are two key Christian doctrines. In this volume, Packer strongly defends these beliefs against contemporary challenges. In so doing, he deals with theological issues such as the atonement, justification and universalism. The articles on the work of the Holy Spirit include theological reflections on the charismatic movement. At a time when this was widely condemned in traditional circles, Packer took a positive view of it, although acknowledging weaknesses within the movement as it then existed. He calls for believers to be serious about the Holy Spirit. His articles on this topic are valuable examples of how to apply theological beliefs to controversial issues within the church. J. I. An important anthology that reaffirms the classic doctrine of substitutionary atonement and counters the ongoing attacks against it. If ever there was a time and a need for an enthusiastic reaffirmation of the biblical doctrine of substitutionary atonement, it is now. With this foundational tenet under widespread attack, J. I. Packer and Mark Dever's anthology plays an important role, issuing a clarion call to readers to stand firm in the truth. In My Place Condemned He Stood combines three classic articles by Packer-"The Heart of the Gospel"; his Tyndale Biblical Theology Lecture, "What Did the Cross Achieve"; and his introductory essay to John Owen's The Death of Death in the Death of Christ-with Dever's recent article, "Nothing but the Blood." It also features a foreword by the four principals of Together for the Gospel: Dever, Ligon Duncan, C. J. Mahaney, and Al Mohler. Thoughtful readers looking for a compact classic on this increasingly controversial doctrine need look no farther than this penetrating volume.

They're often mistakenly considered God's "rules"-his outdated list of do's and don'ts that add up to a guilt-ridden, legalistic way of life. But as beloved author and Bible scholar J. I. Packer probes the purpose and true meaning of the Ten Commandments, you'll discover that these precepts can aptly be called God's blueprint for the best life possible. They contain the wisdom and priorities everyone needs for relational, spiritual, and societal blessing-and it's all coming from a loving heavenly Father who wants the best for his children. Not only does Packer deliver these truths in brief, readable segments, but he includes discussion questions and ideas for further study at the end of each chapter. This book will challenge you to view the commandments with new eyes and help you to understand-perhaps for the first time-the health, hope, and heritage you're offered there.

Anglicanism, according to J.? I. Packer, possesses "the truest, wisest and potentially richest heritage in all Christen-dom" with the Thirty-nine Articles at its heart. They catch the substance and spirit of biblical Christianity superbly well, and also provide an excellent model of how to confess the faith in a divided Christendom. In this concise study, Packer aims to show how the sixteenth-century Articles should be viewed in the twenty-first century, and how they can enrich the faith of Anglicans in general and of Anglican evangelicals in particular. He demonstrates why the Articles must once again be given a voice within the Church, not merely as an historical curiosity but an authoritative doctrinal statement. A thought-provoking appendix by Roger Beckwith offers seventeen Supplementary Articles, addressing theological issues which have come into prominence since the original Articles were composed. J.? I. Packer is Board of Governors' Professor of Theology at Regent College, Vancouver. Amongst his many best-selling books are Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God (1961), Knowing God (1973), Keep in Step with the Spirit (1984), and Among God's Giants (1991). Roger Beckwith was librarian and warden of Latimer House, Oxford for more than thirty years. His recent books include Elders in Every City (2003) and Calendar, Chronology and Worship (2005).

Praying is a problem for many people. Christians often go through the motions of prayer because it is expected of them, but they are often left wondering, "Did God hear me? Does he even care?" In his book Praying the Lord's Prayer, an excerpt from Growing in Christ, J. I. Packer presents a powerful truth: prayer is a natural activity between the Heavenly Father and his children. As Packer works through each phrase of Christ's pattern of prayer, readers will begin to grasp the basic principles and guidelines of prayer. As readers apply the truths of this book to their prayer lives, they will experience intimate communication with God and will strengthen their own conversations with their Father in heaven.

Christianity is not instinctive to anyone, nor is it picked up casually without effort. It is a faith that has to be learned and matured.

J. I. Packer's Keep in Step with the Spirit focuses on the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit. Now in its second edition, this book is not merely a theological study, but a rousing call to encourage believers to implement the Spirit's directives in their lives. Packer explains how to get the Spirit in focus and how to map the Spirit's path in life. He restates the Christ-centeredness of the Spirit's ministry, reaffirms the biblical call to holiness, and even-handily assesses the charismatic movement. Readers wanting to understand this movement, believers interested in the ministry of the Spirit, and fans of J. I. Packer's writings will appreciate this radical call to personal and corporate revival.

For all those who have ever felt useless to God, J. I. Packer and Carolyn Nystrom offer this encouraging look at characters from Scripture who all failed, but who God used for his glory. Includes study questions, prayer suggestions and journaling ideas.

KNOWING GOD is one of the most significant and popular Christian books of our time and has deepened the faith and understanding of millions of people around the world.'Dr Packer says we're cruel to ourselves if we try to live in his world without knowing about the God whose world it is and who runs it. I'm convinced we're cruel if we deny ourselves the wisdom contained in this Christian classic.' Rico Tice

Are Eastern Orthodoxy and evangelicalism at all compatible? To some Western evangelicals, the practices of Eastern Orthodoxy seem mysterious and perhaps even unbiblical. From an Orthodox perspective, evangelicals lack the spiritual roots provided by centuries-old church traditions. Are the differences between these two branches of Christianity as sharp as they seem? Or is there room for agreement? This book allows five leading authorities to present their different views in a respectful manner, have them critiqued by their fellow authors, and then respond to those critiques. Writing from an Orthodox perspective with a strong appreciation for evangelicalism, Bradley Nassif makes a case for compatibility. Michael Horton and Vladimir Berzonsky take the opposite stance from their respective evangelical and Orthodox backgrounds. And George Hancock-Stefan (evangelical) and Edward Rommen (Orthodox) each offer a qualified "perhaps." The interactive Counterpoints forum is ideal for comparing and contrasting the different positions to understand the strengths and weaknesses of these two important branches of Christianity and to form a personal conclusion regarding their compatibility.

Richard Baxter's The Saints' Everlasting Rest (1650) has long been recognized as one of the great classics of Christian devotion, and it is by this book that he is best known. The original work consists of some eight hundred thousand words-a clear example of Baxter's prolific pen-yet in Baxter's own life-time it reached twelve editions! First abridged in 1754 by John Wesley, in the Christian Library, five years later another abridgement was made by Benjamin Fawcett, and innumerable reprints of this have since been issued. The book has also been translated into Welsh, Gaelic, German and French. The purpose of this abridgement, first published in 1962, was to present the work in a form suitable to the modern reader. No change has been made in the text of the passages selected from the original work, and the spirit and language of Baxter have been so preserved that the movement of his thought and style not only remains unimpaired but stands out even more clearly.
