Sustainability and the Virtues of Environmental Citizenship
This book develops an understanding of environmental virtues as an integral part of environmental citizenship. How can governments in a liberal society shape the choices and character development of free citizens? James Connelly argues that the shaping and promotion of environmental character and virtues can, and should be, done only indirectly. This leads to a consideration of the role of virtues within the life of citizens and of what constitutes an environmental citizen, together with an examination of the types of democratic participation and engagement available to citizens and their relation to the networks of civil society. The characterization of the virtues not only applies to individuals, but also to companies, organized groups and governments. Within the policy realm the question of environmental virtues and dispositions is becoming even more pertinent given the increased use of environmental policy instruments based on voluntary and economic incentives rather than more traditional command and control approaches. Sustainability and the Virtues of Environmental Citizenship will be of interest to scholars, activists, professionals and those working in the environmental theory and practice.

R. G. Collingwood is an important 20th-century historian, archaeologist and philosopher whose works are the subject of continued interest, analysis and study. There is an unquestionable need to support this research activity with the provision of a reference guide which is fully up-to-date, informed and authoritative. The Companion therefore lists all primary and secondary material relevant to the study of Collingwood in all his fields of expertise - historical theory, philosophy and archaeology. It also provides a guide to archive material relevant to his life, together with sources and locations. The resulting volume is an essential companion to the understanding of the life and thought of R. G. Collingwood.
Wittgenstein and Early Analytic Semantics

Wittgenstein and Early Analytic Semantics

This book assesses the respective prospects of two competing methodological approaches to the study of meaning and communication, as well truth and inference, each figuring prominently within the analytic tradition of philosophy of language. The first, ‘logistical’ approach is characterized by the employment of de-compositional logical analysis designed to resolve various theoretically problematic semantic and logical puzzles. The representative proponents of this approach are the three great early analytic philosophers (Frege, Russell, and the early Wittgenstein). The second, ‘phenomenological’ approach, by contrast, instead advocates careful inspection and detailed description of our actual linguistic practices, along with general features of the ordinary circumstances, and lived experiences, in which they are situated. The aim of such description is then to dissolve the aforementioned puzzles by showing them to derive from key misunderstandings of these practices and circumstances. The principle proponent here is the later Wittgenstein. Expanding upon the work of the later Wittgenstein, this book argues that considerations regarding the nature of following a rule, and deriving from the impossibility of private languages, decisively recommend the phenomenological over the logistical methodology, in particular because these considerations demand that we identify linguistic meanings with the disciplined uses of words within public, and proto-typically social, linguistic practices.

Politics and the Environment has established itself as one of the most comprehensive textbooks in this area. This new edition has been completely revised and updated whilst retaining the features and the theory-to-practice focus which made the first two editions so successful. This text is designed to introduce students to the key concepts and issues which surround environmental problems and their political solutions. The authors investigate the people, movements and organisations that form and implement these policies, and explore the barriers which hinder successful introduction of international environmental politics. The 3rd edition has been expanded to include: The shift in focus in environmental politics from sustainable development to climate change governance An extensive discussion on climate change: including institutional, national and global responses in the aftermath of the Kyoto protocol An increased international focus with more case studies from the UK, Europe, Australia and North America More discussion of global environmental social movements: including the US environmental organisations, in particular the Green Party and the environmental justice groups This textbook is an invaluable and accessible resource for undergraduates studying environmental politics.

A 36-year-old housewife presents in the emergency department complaining of progressively increasing breathlessness over the last two weeks, accompanied by wheeze and a productive cough. You are the medic on duty...100 Cases in Radiology presents 100 radiological anomalies commonly seen by medical students and junior doctors on the ward, in outpatient clinics or in the emergency department. A succinct summary of the patient's history, examination and initial investigations, including imaging photographs, is followed by questions on the diagnosis and management of each case. The answer includes a detailed discussion of each topic, with further illustration where appropriate, providing an essential revision aid as well as a practical guide for students and junior doctors. Making clinical decisions and choosing the best course of action is one of the most challenging and difficult parts of training to become a doctor. These cases will teach students and junior doctors to recognize important radiological signs, and the medical and/or surgical conditions to which these relate, and to develop their diagnostic and management skills.

This book argues that R. G. Collingwood developed a complete and coherent political philosophy of civilization. In making this case it also demonstrates that Collingwood's philosophical work comprises a unity in which, although there was development, there is no fundamental discontinuity between his earlier and later writings. A philosophy of civilization must situate its subject matter within the full context of human experience and therefore Collingwood's political philosophy of civilization must be situated within the context of his whole philosophy. The book presents the case that Collingwood developed a coherent philosophy of politics and civilization, that this had its roots in both the early and the later work; and that his overall philosophical approach comprises a generally consistent and integrated whole.
