The definitive collection of literary essays by The New Yorker's award-winning longtime book criticEver since the publication of his first essay collection, The Broken Estate, in 1999, James Wood has been widely regarded as a leading literary critic of the English-speaking world. His essays on canonical writers (Gustav Flaubert, Herman Melville), recent legends (Don DeLillo, Marilynne Robinson) and significant contemporaries (Zadie Smith, Elena Ferrante) have established a standard for informed and incisive appreciation, composed in a distinctive literary style all their own. Together, Wood's essays, and his bestselling How Fiction Works, share an abiding preoccupation with how fiction tells its own truths, and with the vocation of the writer in a world haunted by the absence of God. In Serious Noticing, Wood collects his best essays from two decades of his career, supplementing earlier work with autobiographical reflections from his book The Nearest Thing to Life and recent essays from The New Yorker on young writers of extraordinary promise. The result is an essential guide to literature in the new millennium.

Grace Bible: The Book of Romans (Black and White Version)
This is the Black and White version of the 'Grace Bible: The Book of Romans.'Ever wondered what Romans was all about? Though you have read it like me hundreds of times and wondered, 'What is missing' The translation is my 30 plus years of research into the linguistics of Greek words from the quotes out of the Hebrew. It answers questions like, 'Why does the Old Testament talk about 'justice' but why is that word totally missing from the New Testament' It also tries to answer, 'What are the Spirits of God.' Yet, it actually opens up more questions than it answers. This is not an authoritative direct translation of Romans, but may fill in some missing pieces that the readers of that age understood, yet we do not get. Warning: if you are highly religious this book may offend you, but if you are a sealer of truth it may add some insights into the Seven Spirits of God and the overall Spirits of God.

THis is the second book in the series. A translation of the Book of Galatians. It is unlike any translation you have read before. It is 30 years of searching deep for meanings of words to begin to understand what Paul was saying. Using New Testament quotes of the Old Testament so search what the Greek words meaning by those using them. Plus, linguistic studies on the words themselves to find hidden meanings lost for millenniums. And then to bring them into simple wordings. Deep insights into the Spirits of God is found throughout the pages. Yet, many questions it opens up. This is not a direct translation of Galatians. But adds meaning to what the people of that age knew already when a word was said. Ever wonder why the great theme of 'Justice' is so prevalent in the Old Testament, but not a word of it in the New Testament?

A translation of Romans. It is one of a series of translations of the books of the Bible. It attempts to answer questions like, why does the principle of justice, mentioned so many times in the Old Testament suddenly disappear in the new Testament? And another question, if Abraham, Moses and you are called Elohiym, who are the Elohiym? This translation also has a focus on the Seven Spirits of God. And so inserts the 'spirit of' to terms like peace and so forth to identify them and their function. So it is not always a direct translation. But, was that what the Apostle Paul and others were talking about? It also talks words like 'accredited' and looks back at that Hebrew word and translates it to 'infusion.' For, the Hebrew word has the meaning of 'interpenetrated with.' The word infused is a more common language word than 'accredited' which doesn't convey the original meaning. This translation uses a linguistic style of translating, i.e. what is the one common word that best fits for the overall usage according to all the passages it is found in. So, this translation tends to use a consistent translation of major words to continue to get the same sense from the Old Testament to the New, to maybe understand what Jesus and the Apostles were talking about. This translation is not for the faint of heart or the deeply religious, for it opens more questions than answers.

This is a translation of the Book of Matthew, that is far different than what you have read before. The stories are the same, yet many of the meanings of doctrinal words have been change to reflect the Spiritual Realm. If God has been influencing to understand the Seven Spirits of God and all the Spirits of God, this may be insightful for you.

New Yorker book critic and award-winning author James Wood delivers a novel of a family struggling to connect with one another and find meaning in their own lives. In the years since his daughter Vanessa moved to America to become a professor of philosophy, Alan Querry has never been to visit. He has been too busy at home in northern England, holding together his business as a successful property developer. His younger daughter, Helen--a music executive in London--hasn't gone, either, and the two sisters, close but competitive, have never quite recovered from their parents' bitter divorce and the early death of their mother. But when Vanessa's new boyfriend sends word that she has fallen into a severe depression and that he's worried for her safety, Alan and Helen fly to New York and take the train to Saratoga Springs. Over the course of six wintry days in upstate New York, the Querry family begins to struggle with the questions that animate this profound and searching novel: Why do some people find living so much harder than others? Is happiness a skill that might be learned or a cruel accident of birth? Is reflection conducive to happiness or an obstacle to it? If, as a favorite philosopher of Helen's puts it, "the only serious enterprise is living," how should we live? Rich in subtle human insight, full of poignant and often funny portraits, and vivid with a sense of place, James Wood's Upstate is a powerful, intense, beautiful novel.

How Fiction Works: (Tenth Anniversary Edition) Updated and Expanded
10th anniversary revised edition with new Introduction James Wood's How Fiction Works is a scintillating study of the magic of fiction--an analysis of its main elements and a celebration of its lasting power. Here one of the most prominent and stylish critics of our time looks into the machinery of storytelling to ask some fundamental questions: What do we mean when we say we "know" a fictional character? What constitutes a telling detail? When is a metaphor successful? Is Realism realistic? Why do some literary conventions become dated while others stay fresh? James Wood ranges widely, from Homer to Make Way for Ducklings, from the Bible to John le Carr , and his book is both a study of the techniques of fiction-making and an alternative history of the novel. Playful and profound, How Fiction Works will be enlightening to writers, readers, and anyone else interested in what happens on the page.
