This Third Edition of this now classic text offers up-to-date guidance for transforming policies and practices to improve the education of emergent bilinguals. In this updated edition, Ofelia García and Jo Anne Kleifgen are joined by Claudia Cervantes-Soon to bring forth a just vision for the education of language-minoritized students in the United States. The authors use accessible language to introduce policies, programs, research, and practices to equitably educate these students. This widely used textbook has been expanded to explore the potential of translanguaging and the promises and pitfalls of Artificial Intelligence. It also addresses the harmful role that colonialism and raciolinguistic ideologies play, offering guidance for transforming policies and practices to improve the education of emergent bilinguals. Updated chapters consider the theoretical constructs, empirical evidence, and pedagogical practices related to the five most important aspects of the education of emergent bilinguals in K–12 classrooms: language and literacy considerations; curriculum and pedagogy; family and community engagement; assessment; and digital technologies and learning. Readers will find innovative recommendations to help them imagine the possibilities and make changes that will transform education for some of the most disadvantaged students. Book Features: Highlights the importance of leveraging all the linguistic and cultural practices of emergent bilinguals. Provides succinct descriptions of alternative practices for transforming our schools and students' futures. Uncovers the deleterious effects of not only colonialism, but also capitalism, patriarchy, and racism. Considers the social cataclysms, including a global pandemic, that have affected minoritized communities, as well as teachers and students. Explores the development of new technologies that are altering the ways in which we educate children.

Rethinking the Education of Multilingual Learners
A ground-breaking and topical commentary from a leading thinker within the field of multilingual education. Over the past 40 years, Jim Cummins has proposed a number of highly influential theoretical concepts, including the threshold and interdependence hypotheses and the distinction between conversational fluency and academic language proficiency. In this book, he provides a personal account of how these ideas developed and he examines the credibility of critiques they have generated, using the criteria of empirical adequacy, logical coherence, and consequential validity. These criteria of theoretical legitimacy are also applied to the evaluation of two different versions of translanguaging theory – Unitary Translanguaging Theory and Crosslinguistic Translanguaging Theory – in a way that significantly clarifies this controversial concept.

Transforming Sanchez School

Transforming Sanchez School

This book is the result of a 20-year collaboration between a school principal (Raymond R. Isola) and an educational researcher (Jim Cummins). Together, they document how the Sanchez Elementary School successfully implemented evidence-based instruction to transform the learning experiences of students from a low-income and linguistically diverse community in the Mission District of San Francisco. The Sanchez School story shows the positive impact of using shared leadership and the results-oriented cycle of inquiry to implement school-based policies designed to activate students? talents and intellectual power within the classroom. Over the course of 13 years, from 1999 to 2012, test scores improved dramatically. The school's average annual academic growth was more than 20 points, much more than the 11-point average growth for elementary schools in California. When Dr. Isola became principal, the school was performing in the lowest quartile of California's Academic Performance Index. Contrary to top-down formulaic approaches, Principal Isola used a horizontal leadership system that engaged all stakeholders?including teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, parents, community members, businesses leaders, and students themselves?in the project of improving student learning and school reform.
