Alice in Blunderland (1907) by: John Kendrick Bangs . with illustrations by: Albert Levering / NOVEL / Children's book
Alice in Blunderland: An Iridescent Dream is a novel by John Kendrick Bangs. It was first published in 1907 by Doubleday, Page & Co. of New York, with illustrations by Albert Levering. It is a political parody of the two Alice books by Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. It is critical of economic issues such as taxation, corporate greed, and corruption. Instead of entering Wonderland, Alice finds herself in "Blunderland", which is also described as "Municipal Ownership Country". The book features line drawings by Albert Levering 1869-1929), after the original Alice illustrations by John Tenniel. In 1902, Bangs had written a book inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, called Rollo in Emblemland. Part of Alice in Blunderland was previously published as "Alice in Municipaland" in Concerning Municipal Ownership, vol. 1 no. 10 (December 1906), pp. 182-87 (perhaps the first chapter of the book

The Dreamers is a literary pastiche and travesty, the club that is formed merely an excuse to make good fun of the literary stylings (and stylers) of Bangs' day. A group of characters are convinced that literary inspiration comes in dreams. They decide to form a club, meeting once a month to consume a marvelous meal, then head home to sleep -- and dream. The plan is then to record the dreams, and read the results at the next meeting. The beginning amusingly reveals the misconceptions the group labours under: most of the difficulty of writing, they're sure, is in the mechanical setting down of the words on the page -- a problem they surmount through the use of a stenographer. Creative writing ? "These things require very little intellectual labor", they believe -- and if anyone could prove this claim, they could.

A House-Boat on the Styx is a book written by John Kendrick Bangs and published in 1895. The premise of the book is that everyone who has ever died (up until the time in which the book is set, which seems to be about the time of its publication) has gone to Styx. This does not appear to be the conventional Hell described by Dante in The Inferno, but rather the Hades described in Greek myth (both of which had Styxes): a universal collecting pot for dead souls, regardless of their deeds in life.

Just when you thought your cognitive dissonance was healing... Come to a journey to Liberalland, where the best intentions are justified by any means, The logical absurdity of Socialism, Progressivism, and a few other -ism's piled on, have built a city where the city government leans so far left it has to be propped up to keep from falling over. Alice remains sane, through all this, whlle retaining her naivete' (also known as gullibility) and we follow her (respectably, not stalking) through her adventures after she wished one progressive wish too many... Excerpt: ""Oh dear!"" cried Alice impatiently, as she sat rocking in her chair, listening to the pattering of the rain upon the roof of the veranda. ""I do wish there was something to do, or somebody to do, or somewhere to go. The Gov'ment ought to provide covered playgrounds for children on wet days. It wouldn't cost much, to put a glass cover on the Park!"" ""A very good, idea! I'll make a note of that,"" said a squeaky little voice at her side...

What would happen if master detective Sherlock Holmes sired a son with the daughter of one of his archenemies? That's the supposition at the center of R. Holmes & Co., which pits criminal mastermind Raffles against Holmes and goes on to tell the story of how Holmes fell for Raffles' daughter Marjorie, with whom he later had a child, the Raffles Holmes of the book's title. R. Holmes & Co.: Being the Remarkable Adventures of Raffles Holmes, Esq., Detective and Amateur Cracksman by Birth (1906) is a short story collections as sequel to the Raffles books by E. W. Hornung. This is one of two short story collections as sequels to the Raffles books by E. W. Hornung. THE ADVENTURE OF THE HERALD PERSONAL (excerpt) That I was in a hard case is best attested by the fact that when I had paid for my Sunday Herald there was left in my purse just one tuppence-ha'penny stamp and two copper cents, one dated 1873, the other 1894. The mere incident that at this hour eighteen months later I can recall the dates of these coins should be proof, if any were needed, of the importance of the coppers in my eyes, and therefore of the relative scarcity of funds in my possession. Raffles was dead-killed as you may remember at the battle of Spion Kop-and I, his companion, who had never known want while his deft fingers were able to carry out the plans of that insinuating and marvellous mind of his, was now, in the vernacular of the American, up against it. I had come to the United States...
