An illustrated examination of a 1995 work by Mike Kelley that marked a significant change in his work. One of the most influential artists of our time, Mike Kelley (1954-2012) produced a body of innovative work mining American popular culture as well as modernist and postmodernist art-relentless examinations of subjectivity and of society that are both sinister and ecstatic. With a wide range of media, Kelley's work explores themes as varied as post-punk politics, religious systems, social class, and repressed memory. Using architectural models to represent schools he attended, his 1995 work, Educational Complex, presents forgotten spaces as frames for private trauma, real or imagined. The work's implications are at once miniature and massive. In this book, John Miller offers an illustrated examination of this milestone work that marked a significant change in Kelley's practice. A "complex" can mean an architectural configuration, a psychological syndrome, or a political apparatus, and Miller approaches Educational Complex through corresponding lines of inquiry, considering the making of the work, examining it in terms of education and trauma (sexual or otherwise), and investigating how it tests the ideological horizon of art as an institution. Miller shows that in Educational Complex, Kelley expands his political and aesthetic focus, including not only such artifacts as generic forms of architecture but (inspired by the infamous McMartin Preschool case) popular fantasies associated with ritual sex abuse and false memory syndrome. Through this archaeology of the contemporary, Miller argues, Kelley examines the mandate for education and the liberal democratic premises underpinning it.

Pynchon’s California is the first book to examine Thomas Pynchon’s use of California as a setting in his novels. Throughout his 50-year career, Pynchon has regularly returned to the Golden State in his fiction. With the publication in 2009 of his third novel set there, the significance of California in Pynchon’s evolving fictional project becomes increasingly worthy of study. Scott McClintock and John Miller have gathered essays from leading and up-and-coming Pynchon scholars who explore this topic from a variety of critical perspectives, reflecting the diversity and eclecticism of Pynchon’s fiction and of the state that has served as his recurring muse from The Crying of Lot 49 (1965) through Inherent Vice (2009). Contributors explore such topics as the relationship of the "California novels" to Pynchon’s more historical and encyclopaedic works; the significance of California’s beaches, deserts, forests, freeways, and "hieroglyphic" suburban sprawl; the California-inspired noir tradition; and the surprising connections to be uncovered between drug use and realism, melodrama and real estate, private detection and the sacred. The authors bring insights to bear from an array of critical, social, and historical discourses, offering new ways of looking not only at Pynchon’s California novels, but at his entire oeuvre. They explore both how the history, geography, and culture of California have informed Pynchon’s work and how Pynchon’s ever-skeptical critical eye has been turned on the state that has been, in many ways, the flagship for postmodern American culture.

‘Empire and the Animal Body: Violence, Identity and Ecology in Victorian Adventure Fiction’ develops recent work in animal studies, eco-criticism and postcolonial studies to reassess the significance of exotic animals in Victorian adventure literature. Depictions of violence against animals were integral to the ideology of adventure literature in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, the evolutionary hierarchies on which such texts relied were complicated by developing environmental sensitivities and reimaginings of human selfhood in relation to animal others. As these texts hankered after increasingly imperilled areas of wilderness, the border between human and animal appeared tense, ambivalent and problematic.

Known for their prominent tusks and distinctive whiskers, the walrus has often cropped up in contemporary culture: from its role as the majestic protagonist walking along the briny beach in Lewis Carroll's poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter," to the Beatles' enigmatic pronouncement "I am the Walrus." Walruses have long played a significant role in Arctic indigenous communities, where they have held a crucial place in traditional mythologies. Walrus explores the intriguing and affecting history of an animal that remains on the frontline of contemporary conservation debates.

For 50 years, a unique and courageous group of people have quietly opted for a life of poverty and the discipline of prayer. Always with the time and care to understand people’s hidden pains, their permanently open meal-table usually rocked with laughter. Drawing exclusively on the memories of the Community’s members, their private papers and the reminiscences of those they have known, this book captures a life of humour, tragedy, inspiration and insight. In our increasingly dehumanising culture, the Community’s devotion to the details of daily life has had a life-changing impact on many people across the world.

Gorgeously illustrated, this is the story of a crocodile and a crocodile bird. These animals exist in a symbiotic relationship. Crocodile birds pick leeches and lice from the crocodile's skin and cry out whenever they see danger. In this story, Winston is a patient crocodile, George is a prankster, and their story is both sweet and dramatic. John Miller spent much of his youth tramping about the woods and swamps of Morris County, New Jersey. Later, these adventures inspired his children's books and articles. Giuliano Cucco was an artist and illustrator. He and his wife were killed in a traffic accident in Rome in 2006. He is survived by a son and two grandchildren.

Impatient fans waiting for the next season of the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm (which may never come), can celebrate. The authors invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy their alternative: The LOST Episodes (Shoulda.... Coulda.... Woulda been) Curb Your Enthusiasm - Volume 1 Assigned to nightshift work, commuting thousands of miles to and from Los Angeles each week AND working for the World's WORST Boss, the authors found a creative outlet by turning their surreal and bizarre adventures into a hilarious, side-splitting series of sitcom episodes that became the basis for this book. While sipping coffee at street side cafes in Santa Monica and driving up and down the Pacific Coast Highway in cheap rental cars, they collected enormous amounts of hysterical material. During their time deployed in LA, and after hundreds of incredibly funny experiences and conversations, numerous people suggested they write their material down and get it to a Hollywood agent, or better yet, Larry David. Read about the countless inspirations, the deceit, the broken promises and their strange-but-true adventures. The sitcom episodes in this book mimic the style of the HBO comedy series, Curb Your Enthusiasm. These 'Lost' episodes are not so much 'Lost', but more accurately, 'Never Found'. The Lost Episodes - Volume 1 is a compilation of 10 complete script-outlines and the backstory describing how each script came to be. Fresh, outrageous, offensive and addictive, The Lost Episodes will grab you from the start and keep you entertained to the very last page. You won't be able to put this one down
