I Got Mine: Confessions of a Midlist Writer is the memoir of Nichols's extraordinary life, as seen through the lens of his writing. Everything that went into making him a writer and eventually found an outlet in his work - his education, family, wives, children, friends, enemies, politics, and place - is told from the point of view of his daily practice of writing. Beginning with his first novel, The Sterile Cuckoo, published in 1965 when he was just twenty-four, Nichols shares his highs and lows: his ambivalent relationship with money; his growing disenchantment with the hypocrisy of capitalism; and his love-hate relationship with Hollywood - including the years-long struggle of working with director Robert Redford on the film version of The Milagro Beanfield War, which was filmed around Truchas and featured many of Nichols's northern New Mexico neighbors. Throughout I Got Mine Nichols spins a shining thread connecting his lifelong engagement with progressive political causes, his passionate interest in and identification with ordinary people, and his deep connection to the land.
Men, you're here for a purpose with the abilities and skills to accomplish that purpose, but life dropkicks us into manhood with few clues on doing the job properly. We struggle to identify the experiences and master the lessons that can transform us from boys to men. John W Nichols shares lessons he has learned on his journey into manhood, lessons that are yours to make your own. Ready or not the day will arrive when you, too, have been promoted to manhood with all the responsibilities and concerns. What you become, what you make of yourself, how you conduct yourself, and the reputation you build-all are entrusted into your hands. Be prepared.

I Got Mine: Confessions of a Midlist Writer is the memoir of Nichols's extraordinary life, as seen through the lens of his writing. Winner of the 2017 New Mexico-Arizona Book Award for Best BookWinner of the 2017 New Mexico-Arizona Book Award for Fiction - OtherOn the surface this book spins a fisherman's tall tale about a ribald angling contest between three middle-aged friends who love (and perhaps hate) each other: a preppy trilingual Machiavelli, an intellectual ghetto pool shark, and a brawny Texan who defies his own macho stereotype. All professional writers, the men have met every autumn for eighteen years at the Big Arsenic Springs on the Río Grande to fly-cast for trout and argue about life, literature, marriage, and eco-Armageddon. Their escapades reveal a spirited paean to a beautiful river gorge, and also a poignant cautionary fable about male friendship and cutthroat competition. As aging cripples them all, tragedy mars the tournament. In this insightful and bittersweet love story, masterful storyteller John Nichols brings to life northern New Mexico and three unforgettable characters.
This short book calls to account the government misrulers and corporate criminals who made suffering from the global coronavirus pandemic more acute. Modeled on a famous 1940 bestseller--a pamphlet exposing appeasers of Nazi Germany--Guilty Men shows how the crisis has been stoked by the callous and opportunistic decisions of powerful men. The rogues gallery begins with Donald Trump, who deliberately downplayed the crisis despite knowing its dangers, as well as his international political allies, above all Boris Johnson. Billionaire politicians like Georgia senator Kelly Loeffler moved stocks at the same time they were telling Americans all was well . Political charlatans like Education Secretary Betsy DeVos undermined public safety in order to advance their agenda, Trump-controlled agencies, led by the ever-crooked Federal Reserve, bailed out Wall Street while failing to provide basic relief for workers. Libertarian "think tanks" like the Ayn Rand Institute decried public expenditures but were first in line to get bailout checks. Pharmaceutical companies gamed the vaccine race, and the most rapacious global corporations like Facebook, Visa, and Pfizer have found the pandemic to be very profitable indeed, vastly enriching the already grotesquely bloated fortunes of trillionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Charles Koch. Guilty Men closes with a call for a version of the Pecora Commission, initiated by newly elected Franklin Roosevelt, that took aim at what FDR called "speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, and profiteering" that stoked the Depression. The commission led to some of the most far-reaching reforms in US history, as well as sensational hearings that led to the fall of the leading bankers and financiers of that era.

Seventy-five years ago, Henry Wallace, then the vice president of the United States, mounted a campaign about the "Danger of American Fascism." As fighting in the European and Japanese theatres drew to a close, Wallace warned that the country might win the war and lose the peace; that the fascist threat the United States. was battling abroad had a terrifying domestic variant, growing rapidly in power: wealthy corporatists and their allies in the media. Wallace predicted that if the New Deal project was not renewed and expanded in the postwar era, American fascists would use fear mongering, xenophobia, and racism to regain economic and political power. He championed a progressive postwar world-an alternative to the rising triumphalist "American Century" notion in which the United States rejected colonialism and imperialism. Wallace's political vision-as well as his nomination to remain vice president-was sidelined by Democratic big city bosses and southern segregationists. In the decades to come, other progressives would mount similar campaigns: George McGovern and Jesse Jackson most prominently. As John Nichols chronicles in this book, they ultimately failed-a warning to would-be reformers today-but their efforts provide us with insights into the nature of the Democratic Party and strategic lessons for the likes of Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Well-known New Mexico author, John Nichols, recounts the four-year marriage of his French mother and American father during World War II. Married in Paris, France, David and Monique struggle between 1939 and 1942 to make an idyllic life in Berkeley, California. That life is soon disrupted by Monique's refugee family members escaping the European horrors. Monique's health is fragile, and, when John is only two, she dies suddenly and tragically. Relying on the diaries, letters, and photos of family archives at home and abroad, Nichols creates creates a moving, often humorous portrait of the father he loves and the vivacious mother he never knew. The background story is a World War that impacted every aspect of their brief, yet remarkable, union.
This book offers a completely up-to-date summary of nutritional medicine as it applies to frontline medical professionals, medical students and the interested layperson. Newspapers often give contradictory and confusing reports on issues such as alcohol intake, dietary sugars versus fats and the value (or lack thereof) of taking supplements. In addition, many GPs are as confused as their patients on these matters as they get very little education in nutrition either at medical school or afterwards. However, nutritional medicine is not really that confusing. There is some disagreement among experts, but there is a consensus on the most important issues, albeit with slight variations. The book summarises these generally agreed opinions, but explains where there are differences of opinion, detailing the reasons for these.
