"... Villa was an outlaw for twenty-two years. When he was only a boy of sixteen, ... he killed a government official... that in itself would not have outlawed him long in Mexico, where human life is cheap; but once a refugee he committed the unpardonable crime of stealing cattle from the rich "hacendados." And from that time to the outbreak of the Madero revolution, the Mexican government had a price on his head." -John Reed, Insurgent Mexico, (1914) American journalist John Reed was sent in 1913 to Mexico by the Metropolitan Magazine to cover the Mexican Revolution, an armed struggle from 1910 to 1920 that had a major impact on Mexican culture and government. While reporting on Pancho Villa, a former bandit, who became a Mexican revolutionary general and one of the most prominent figures of the Mexican Revolution, Reed established his national reputation as a war correspondent. Reed's articles were published in his book Insurgent Mexico (1914), which offers a fascinating read for anyone interested in the Mexican Revolution and its history.

Kennan, who said in 1956: "Reed's account of the events of that time rises above every other contemporary record for its literary power, its penetration, its command of detail." Ten Days That Shook the World was also the basis of the 1928 Russian movie with the same title by Sergei Eisenstein, and the 1981 Oscar winning movie Reds about the life of John Reed, directed by Warren Beatty. In Time is Running Out: Reflections on an Alternative Way of Being, John Reed presents the reader with an honest and uncompromising appraisal of how politics, capitalism, social conditions and climate change are interrelating so as to constitute a 'perfect storm' of challenges that will determine the future of civilisation. John Reed explains that 'the ones most adaptable to change' will be those with the necessary psycho/spiritual resources. This book examines what that means and how human consciousness must evolve to make life sustainable in society and on the planet as a whole. This is an important and timely polemic.

"Ten Days That Shook the World" is American journalist and socialist John Reed's first-hand account of the Russian October Revolution of 1917. First published in 1919, Reed died soon after the book was released and was buried at the Kremlin in Moscow, one of only three Americans interred there, in tribute to his friendship with Vladimir Lenin and his important contribution to the new Soviet regime. While it was intended as an impartial and unbiased account, by Reed's own admission, "in the struggle his] sympathies were not neutral." While Reed sided with the Bolsheviks and the Communist Revolution, his account of this pivotal time in world history is riveting, detailed, passionate, and brutally honest. "Ten Days That Shook the World" remains one of the most important and consequential works of American journalism and continues to influence the modern understanding of this violent and transformative time. An important historical document by an eyewitness of an event that would change the political landscape for most of the 20th century, "Ten Days That Shook the World" is a must read for those interested in communism, socialism, and how the October Revolution shaped Russian history. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

The stirring eyewitness account of an epochal revolution.// By one of the great reporters of all time.// 'The authenticity of John Reed's] writing on the revolution gained from its being a first-hand, eyewitness account. Seen from the streets and barricades, drawn from the meeting halls and fiery debates. Acute powers of observation, aligned always with a sensitivity towards ordinary people. Not "experts". . . . Ten Days That Shook the World . . . raised questions, it carved out a kind of journalism that would allow the marginalised in society to be heard in their own voice. It inspired readers, rebels, revolutionaries.' - P. Sainath// ' John Reed] rushed into the centre of wars and revolutions, strikes and demonstrations, with the eye of a movie camera, before there was one, and the memory of a tape recorder, before that existed. He made history come alive for the readers of popular magazines and impoverished radical monthlies.' - Howard Zinn

Ten Days That Shook the World is an undisputed classic of political reportage. A stunning first-hand account overflowing with urgency and immediacy, Reed’s masterpiece lives and breathes the streets, meeting halls, posters and pamphlets of the revolution he witnessed. Like no other work, it places the reader shoulder to shoulder with the people’s militias, factory committees, propagandists and crowds which thronged St Petersburg’s squares to protest, celebrate, and strike. Rather than a coup orchestrated by a select few, the revolution here emerges in all its true energy, chaos, and creativity as a mass struggle from below for liberation, equality, and socialism. A hundred years after its initial publication, Ten Days That Shook the World remains an unparalleled account of one of the twentieth century’s most seminal events. John Reed (1887–1920) was an author, journalist, and activist.

One Mistake after Another is the story of one baby boomer's odyssey that took him to many countries and cultures in the search for the holy grail of spiritual meaning in his life. This quest, at times, takes the form of a colourful and quixotic romp with perceptive snapshots of life in the19 60's and 1970's.

Ten Days That Shook the World by John Reed. Ten Days That Shook the World (1919) is a book by the American journalist and socialist John Reed about the October Revolution in Russia in 1917, which Reed experienced firsthand. THIS book is a slice of intensified history - history as I saw it. It does not pretend to be anything but a detailed account of the November Revolution, when the Bolsheviki, at the head of the workers and soldiers, seized the state power of Russia and placed it in the hands of the Soviets. Naturally most of it deals with "Red Petrograd," the capital and heart of the insurrection. But the reader must realize that what took place in Petrograd was almost exactly duplicated, with greater or lesser intensity, at different intervals of time, all over Russia. In this book, the first of several which I am writing, I must confine myself to a chronicle of those events which I myself observed and experienced, and those supported by reliable evidence; preceded by two chapters briefly outlining the background and causes of the November Revolution. I am aware that these two chapters make difficult reading, but they are essential to an understanding of what follows.

Romania during World War I faced a unique situation. Although ruled by a German king, it had strong cultural and historical ties to France and the West. The young nation also had territorial ambitions that it hoped to satisfy. As a result, the country maintained cautious neutrality in the early years of the war before ultimately deciding to enter the conflict on the side of the Allies in 1916. One of those who witnessed this situation was the American journalist John Reed. Internationally known for his famous account of the Bolshevik Revolution, Ten Days that Shook the World, John Reed’s writings about Romania are, until now, virtually unknown. As a journalist of great talent and a witness to the situation in Romania in 1915, on the eve of its entry into the war, John Reed’s accounts are insightful reading for anyone interested in this period of Romanian history or the author himself. Edited, with an introduction by Dr. A. K. Brackob, this volume brings together these writings and reveals John Reed’s unique perspective on Romania. Born in Portland, Oregon on October 22, 1887, John Reed was among the most highly acclaimed journalists of his day, famous for his first-hand accounts of the Mexican Revolution, where he rode alongside Pancho Villa, in addition to his famous book on the Russian Revolution. Reed was also a political activist and a founding member of the Communist Labor Party of America. He died in Russia on October 17, 1920, and is one of only three Americans buried in the Kremlin Wall.
