Ruskin ties his aesthetic theories to real-world issues in The Two Paths. The main tenet of Ruskin's theories of art was that while corrupt and despondent people, who work in unjust societies and rely on the tools of the industrial age, produce inferior art, contented people, who work in just societies and strive to capture the essence of nature, produce fine and noble art. Theoretical methods used by critics like Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, and Max Horkheimer are anticipated and complemented by Ruskin's articles. This Prospects in Visual Rhetoric Critical Edition, the only version of The Two Paths currently in print, offers a rethinking of the rhetorical tradition from a visual standpoint. The introductions and annotations were created to encourage critical debates on Ruskin's artistic ideas, his activism for social reform, his use of visual rhetoric, and the political and historical settings in which his works were produced.

Originally published in "Cornhill" magazine in 1860, "Unto This Last" is a series of four essays on the politics of economics and capitalism by the prominent English art critic of the Victorian era John Ruskin. While Ruskin was most well-known for his writings on art, he was also an accomplished painter and an influential social philosopher and philanthropist. Considered by Ruskin himself as one of his most important works, the ideas introduced in "Unto This Last" were met with great controversy when they first appeared in "Cornhill" magazine. Ruskin argues that economics, art, and science must all have a fundamental foundation in morality. When morality is applied to capitalism, Ruskin finds this economic system sorely lacking and argues instead that all workers deserve a living wage. He also contends that the modern industrial age has had devastating effects on the natural world that must not been overlooked. "Unto This Last" was profoundly influential on many modern social movements and helped shape the economic and political ideas of Mahatma Gandhi. Ruskin, who cannot be strictly labeled as a liberal or conservative in his political ideology, crafts a thought-provoking exposition of the problems with capitalism and industrialization that is as relevant today as when it was first written. John Ruskin was an aesthetician, art historian, reformer and economist, who is perhaps best known for his works on social reform. One of his earliest, and most surprising works, is a fairy tale called "The King of the Golden River". Ruskin wrote the story in 1841 for nineteen-year-old Euphenia Chalmers Gray, whom he married in 1848. The story is set in the ancient country of Stiria, in a beautiful and fertile valley called Treasure Valley, owned by brothers Schwartz, Hans, and Gluck. When the cruel Hans and Schwartz turn an important stranger away from their home, the valley turns to desert, leaving them penniless and desolate. It is only through Gluck's honesty and generous spirit that the valley can be revitalized. This early Victorian classic will delight both children and adults as a charming tale of goodness and love triumphing over evil. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and is illustrated by John C. Johansen.
