The book, The Eagle's Nest; Ten Lectures on the Relation of Natural Science to Art, Given Before the University of Oxford, in Lent Term, 1872, has been considered important throughout the human history, and so that this work is never forgotten we have made efforts in its preservation by republishing this book in a modern format for present and future generations. This whole book has been reformatted, retyped and designed. These books are not made of scanned copies of their original work and hence the text is clear and readable.
Mikä on työn henkinen merkitys? Tähän kirjaan on suomennettu kaksi Ruskinin tärkeimpiin lukeutuvaa tekstiä, goottilaista arkkitehtuuria käsittelevä The Nature of Gothic (”Gotiikan olemus”) sekä kansantaloustieteen ihmiskuvaa kriittisesti ruotiva Unto This Last (”Viimeiset tulevat ensimmäisiksi”), joissa Ruskinin näkemykset työn henkisestä merkityksestä ja oikeudenmukaisesta talousjärjestelmästä saavat väkevimmän ja innostavimman ilmaisunsa. Niitä silloittaa luentoteksti The Work of Iron (”Ruosteen ylistys”), jossa The Nature of Gothicin rakennustaiteellisesta kehyksestä siirrytään luontevasti Unto This Lastin suorasanaiseen mutta kaunopuheiseen yhteiskuntakritiikkiin." (Susanna Pettersson, Helsingin Sanomat 14.8.2021)Työllä on aina tekijänsä. Yhteiskunta, joka alistaa työn markkinataloudelle, alentaa tekijän koneiston osaseksi ja heikentää hänen kykyään kokonaisvaltaiseen hyvinvointiin. Siksi työ on vapautettava ja palautettava ihmisen omiin käsiin hänen itseilmaisunsa ja luomisvoimansa välineeksi. Omana aikanamme, jossa elämän pieninkin osa-alue on muuttunut markkinavoimien leikkikentäksi, Ruskinin viesti on ajankohtaisempi kuin koskaan.

The richness of the Treasure Valley, high in the mountains of Stiria is lost through the evil of the owners, the two elder "Black Brothers", Hans and Schwartz, who in their foolishness mistreat Southwest Wind, Esquire, who in turn floods their valley, washing away their "liquid assets", and turning their valley into a dead valley of red sand. Forced into a trade other than farming, Hans and Schwartz become goldsmiths. They cruelly melt their younger brother Gluck's prize heirloom, a golden mug. This action releases the King of the Golden River for Gluck to pour out of the crucible as a finely dressed little golden dwarf. The dwarfish king offers a proposition to brothers: if someone were to climb up to the source of the Golden River high in the mountains and throw into it at least three drops of "holy water", it would become, for that person only, a river of gold. That person must do it on his first and only attempt or be overwhelmed by the river to become a black stone.
