Seven Thought Provoking Essays In Chapter Form on the subject of Participating in Historical Events and Maintaining Historical Venues in General
Observations on pre-1840's venues (muzzleloader shoots, rendezvous, time-lines, 18th & 19th century juried historical camps and trade faires), as well as, the more formal historic sites (actual military forts i.e. Ft. Ticonderoga, Ft. Loudon TN, Ft. Frederick MD; Trade Depots i.e. Grand Portage MN, Bents Old Fort) and historic residences (Locust Grove, KY, Martin's Station, VA) and the differences in participating at either type of venue. The insights gathered about participation range from planning to implementing the camp administration; from drafting the rules of the camp to enforcing those rules. In one essay the author links the subjects of "credibility" with the idea of "believability." Also addressed is the subject of why it is important for the beginner to meet the challenge of thresholds for a particular camp/venue, especially if the organizers of a venue want authentically clad and accoutered participants. To quote, "A well run event will leave the beginner with the feeling that he has hit the historical jackpot." Other issues which are commonly encountered include the rules which are enacted by organizers to provide guidance but are unfortunately seen by outsiders as "picky." In the material the reader can see that following the rules to keep modern intrusions out of our own personal and camp portrayals shows respect for our neighbors as participants in an historical venue. The author further engages the reader in a discussion of the misuse of terms such as "costume," when referring to period clothing. To wrap up the collection of essays there are some thoughts on the effects of isolating one's self from other venues and participants and the problems that it causes. The book is bolstered by an appendix which references the rules of three different tightly run historical venues, two of which are juried. The book is further illustrated with historical sketches by the Author's wife Connie.

My Journey with Deerfoot, chronicles Hayes' incremental progression, from a young, naive, outdoor enthusiast to a proficient flintlock shooter. It is a story of discovery that leaps forward with the transformation of a plain, humble caplock muzzleloader into a flintlock rifle. The ultimate goal - the proficient use of a flintlock - becomes the driving force that compels the author to push past a number of obstacles. Along the way, he encounters disappointments and breakthroughs before eventually entering into the arena of experimental archeology and the opportunities afforded by hands-on historical activities. Like nuggets sifted from the dirt, each chapter contains numerous references to the lessons learned in using related accouterments, shelters, clothing and of course flintlocks.

This volume presents the Late Classical through Roman pottery from the University of Chicago excavations at Isthmia (1952-1989). In a series of three chapters-on the Late Classical and Hellenistic pottery, the Roman pottery, and the pottery from the Palaimonion-a general discussion is followed by a catalog presenting datable contexts and then by a catalogue of other noteworthy pottery. Appendixes discuss the stratigraphy of the Palaimonion and observations on new and previously published lamps. Amphora stamps are the focus of a further appendix, followed by a catalogue of the Slavic and Byzantine pottery found in the sanctuary area. Although the pottery is sometimes fragmentary, the range of materials over this thousand-year period is typical of Corinthian sites. The finds presented here provide critical information about the history of the Panhellenic sanctuary of Poseidon and the ritual activities that took place there.

The Ecovia do Litoral (the coastal eco-way) is a cycle route which, as the name suggests, follows the coast across the beautiful Algarve region of southern Portugal. The route stretches some 214 km (133 miles) from the frontier town of Vila Real de Santo Ant nio on the Spanish border to the dramatic, 75-metre high cliff tops of Cape St. Vincent on Europe's most southwestern tip. The multi-surface route, encompassing (mainly quiet) roads, dedicated cycle paths and dirt tracks (of various quality), takes in pretty much everything the Algarve has to offer, from sleepy fishing villages to bustling tourist resorts, cosmopolitan cities (Faro) and some of the best (and most expensive) golf real estate in Europe. This book follows numerous attempts at the route but focuses mainly on the author's first, albeit unplanned, disastrous solo expedition in 2012 and two more successful but none-the-less traumatic trips made with equally unprepared friends in 2014 and 2018. If you're looking for a cycling book documenting the efforts of finely tuned athletes, pushing themselves beyond acceptable barriers of pain to cross huge distances at a ridiculous pace, this probably isn't the book for you. This book is for the rest of us, whose dreams and abilities are perhaps a little less extreme. However, if you like the idea of getting lost on a bike for a couple of days in the glorious sunshine, lubricating your inner mechanisms with the occasional cheeky beer along the route and just not taking yourself too seriously (how could anyone take themselves seriously in cycle shorts) then stick around - I promise you, it'll be emotional.

Examples of Roman period red-gloss and red-slip pottery (terra sigillata) found during excavations in the Athenian Agora form the focus of this volume. These fine wares, like the other table wares of the first seven centuries A. D. discussed here, were all imported--a very different situation to earlier periods where Athens was known as a great ceramic-making center, and perhaps the result of mass destruction of potters' workshops during the Sullan sack of 86 B. C. While the image of a demolished pottery industry is tragic, the consequent conglomeration of fine-wares from many parts of the Roman empire in one city makes the Athenian Agora a tremendous source of comparanda for archaeologists working all round the Mediterranean. Written by the world's leading expert on Roman pottery, this huge catalogue illustrating and identifying multiple shapes and types of decoration will therefore be an essential reference book.

In the past, Roman pottery has been judged as inferior to Greek pottery. Recent excavations, however, have led to an increase in knowledge and appreciation of Roman wares. These wares now constitute an important body of evidence for the understanding of art, literacy and trade in the ancient world. John W. Hayes, the acknowledged authority in this field, explains the particular features that mark Roman-period wares, concisely describing how the vessels were manufactured, decorated, traded and used. Placing the pottery in historical context, he describes its roots in the Hellenistic Greek tradition, its evolution as a distinct art form and its influence on Byzantine and Islamic trends.
