What are the different theories of grief? What skills do you need for effective counselling? How can you support people experiencing loss and grief? This handbook provides a comprehensive guide to counselling and supporting people experiencing loss and grief. It introduces the different models and theories of grief, how theory relates to practice and what the essential skills are, and how to work with people in practice. Working with families, understanding diversity and assessing clients are all covered, as well as a chapter on personal and professional development. Case studies and real life examples demonstrate skills in action, and each chapter concludes with notes for trainers. This essential guide will help all those working with people suffering loss and grief to understand grief and how to help. Counsellors, bereavement support volunteers, palliative care nurses, hospice volunteers and students in these fields will all find this an invaluable resource. It can be used as a training guide as well as a resource for individuals, both as a learning tool and for continuing professional development.
The befuddled and beleaguered dean of a small, struggling law school is confronted by the apparent embezzlement of financial aid funds, the murder of two students under bizarre circumstances, the rape of a young secretary, declining applications for admission (no surprise, under the circumstances) and an unhappy, mutinous faculty. Predictably, his job is in jeopardy. The institution where he works – improbably named Crabshaw School of the Law and located in a renovated brassiere factory – is populated by a quirky, engaging group of professorial misfits with student-conferred nicknames like Boomer, Junker, Mattress Head and Bathroom Bob. The dean must deal with them and also with Allison Fetherheft, a forbidding, immensely obese female Provost, who the students usually refer to as Dean Dreadnaught. The crimes and problems are interrelated, but the clues to their resolution point in different directions – if they point anywhere at all. Twisting and turning, punctuated by bouts of unexpected humor and farce, the story rollicks along to its final resolution. Badger, Boomer and Bathroom Bob is a pacy murder mystery, shot through with satire and humour, that leads to an unanticipated and startling conclusion. Author John? Wilson reads widely in a number of genres. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoyed watching Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther, as well as fans of crime and suspense fiction.
2013 Information Book Awards — Long-listed Peace after the First World War inspires hope for a better life that’s crushed by the advent of the Second World War. Beginning with the Treaty of Versailles and the hope for the birth of a better world, Failed Hope follows the postwar rise of fascism, social unrest, Prohibition, the Great Depression, Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, and the wars in Abyssinia, Spain, and China. The general strike in Winnipeg provides a Canadian perspective to the global labour turmoil of the period. The book ends with the failure of appeasement and the outbreak of the Second World War. The information is presented in easily digestible segments, accompanied by photographs. Informative sidebars provide background information or connect world events to activities in Canada. Failed Hope links with John Wilson’s two previous books, Desperate Glory and Bitter Ashes, covering the history of the 20th century from 1914 to 1945 and the effects of its world wars.
Preface to the philosophy of education (International Library of the Philosophy of Education Volume 24)

It is sometimes said that the philosophy of education is not a serious and coherent philosophical area of inquiry. John Wilson examines this argument, taking it as the starting point for his book. He believes that most 'philosophy of education' until now has been little more than the promotion of particular ideologies, and that progress can be made only by a more analytical approach. The central problems lies in establishing a few basic concepts, principles and categories and questions which will form the skeleton of the subject. He therefore outlines the nature of 'philosophy of education' and defines some of its major problems by examining key notions such as the value of education, the nature and implications of learning and what should be learned.
A Baptist Among the Jews

Like most Christians, Mary Blye Howe was uninformed about Jewish ritual and tradition. To satisfy her curiosity she joined a Jewish study group held in the home of a Hasidic rabbi. A Baptist Among the Jews is Howe's first-person account of her eye-opening experience of studying with that welcoming group and how this experience led her to a deeper, richer relationship with her God. While learning about the traditions of Judaism and studying the Torah, Howe discovered a new world of worship and ritual that expanded her experience to include several different Jewish groups, among them Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox. She reveled in the joys of arguing with God (even though God always wins), synagogue-hopping on the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, and dancing with a sefer torah through the streets of Dallas. Page after page, we join Howe on her religious quest and discover how her once-narrow concept of God has expanded with her ability to read the scriptures and understand this new faith. Howe's profound and transforming experiences helped her develop a new sense of worship— one that eschews spectatorship in favor of participation.
Letters from Lines and Spaces

A colourful, humorous, and sometimes perplexing picture of British musical life, written by a musician with a distinguished career that spans forty five years in classical and popular music, recalling his early experiences in orchestras with Benjamin Britten, Leopold Stokowski and Leonard Bernstein, in pop music, with Deep Purple, Frank Zappa, Barry White, and Paul McCartney, and as a top "session" french horn player featured on many studio recordings and television shows with Peggy Lee, Barbara Streisand, Paul Simon, and Tony Bennett. Terry Johns played on dozens of film sound tracks, including "Fiddler on the roof", "Oliver", "Battle of Britain", "Diamonds are for ever" and "Star Wars". The author's musical life began in the brass band of Tower Colliery in South Wales, where his father worked as a miner. These letters are a personal tale of celebration and survival in the sometimes hostile and uncertain environment of professional music, where often the only security of employment is one's skill and ability, and difficulties are greeted with the humour and resilience that has always characterized working musicians everywhere.
An anthology of personal stories and perspectives by members of the Chrysais Men's Group at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church, Tucson, Arizona. The men describe their experiences of growth and transformation in an ongoing community of men committed to practicing the Fourfold Way as delineated by cultural anthropologist Angeles Arrien: showing up and choosing to be present, paying attention to what has heart and meaning, telling the truth without blame or judgment, and being open to outcome, not attached to outcome. An inspiring set of stories, and a blueprint for the formation of other such groups of men, whether religious or secular.
Lifetime golfers Duncan Ferguson and John Wilson have drawn upon club suggestion books from all over the country to compile this snapshot portrait of golf club life. With amusing illustrations by John Raymer and a foreword by the late Bill Deedes, The Suggestion Book is the ideal companion for all club golfers who, whatever their age, background or handicap, will surely appreciate the peculiar charm of the entries within. Often trivial, frequently witty, though sometimes rather terse, these suggestions - and the replies from the club secretaries - provide an entertaining insight into social change over the years and show how golfers' priorities have altered. We no longer leave our bicycles in the Smoking Room, nor do we request that the brake meets the 9.30 a.m. train. And as for the price and quality of a glass of port or the smartness of the caddies' shoes, these matters of concern would be comically out of place in today's world. But their inclusion here is fabulously revealing of the axes ground by golfers of the past. By contrast, the modern-day entries in the suggestion books are more concerned with handicaps, competitions and winter rules.
