Circumcision of the Spirit in Cyril of Alexandria

Essays on Welsh Politicians through the Ages
There is a tradition of biographical storytelling in historiography that goes back through Lytton Strachey, John Aubrey and Gaius Suetonius to Plutarch. Jonathan Morgan's book is in that tradition. He has described a set of politicians from Wales or with Welsh ancestry who have had a very wide range of impacts on history and who date from the sixteenth century to today. It is often perceived in the world of States that if a small country is positioned next to a large and powerful country, it and its citizens could get an inferiority complex. Wales' contribution to the United Kingdom in terms of power, politics and participation has been so significant as this book shows, that there should be no inferiority complex.

Brecon Cathedral has had a tremendous impact on the spiritual life of many people. Not many know the figures behind most of the plaques. They are significant in that they are a compilation of Brecon's history. Many of them are Welsh, but some more prominent benefactors came from over the border. The Regimental Chapel is known throughout the world for its collection of Colours from the Zulu Wars. Brecon has only been a Cathedral since the 1920s but was one of the Priories left standing by the Cromwellians as it was considered the parish church of the town, although some damage was done. In late Victorian times it was revamped by Gilbert Scott and unfortunately many of the effigies were lost. However it stands as a great bastion of Christianity in Brecon immersed in the town's history. This is the story of the figures behind it.

This textbook is an engaging introduction to the more advanced writings on contract law, primarily designed to allow students to ‘get under the skin’ of the topic and begin to build their critical thinking and analysis skills. Each chapter is structured around key questions and debates that provoke deeper thought and, ultimately, a clearer understanding. This edition has been extensively rewritten to include new cases and scholarship throughout. New sections include ‘no oral modification’ clauses, substantive fairness, regulation of standard-form contracts, and remoteness of damage in contract. An excellent book for students of contract law who wish to know more, the aim of the book is not to present a complete overview of theoretical issues in contract law, but rather to illustrate the current debates which are currently going on among those working in shaping the area. The text features summaries of the views of notable experts on key topics and each chapter ends with a list of guided further reading. New to this Edition: - Extensively rewritten to include new cases and scholarship throughout. - New sections and debates include ‘no oral modification’ clauses, substantive fairness, regulation of standard-form contracts, and remoteness of damage in contract.
Famous Figures of Christ College Brecon

Famous Figures of Christ College Brecon

The book consists of a miscellany of historical narrative and idiosyncratic reminiscence about a variety of different individuals associated with Christ College, who have distinguished themselves one way or another in a particular field of endeavour. It is, in essence, a personal selection; it makes no claim to be a comprehensive historical account. We start with the origins of the foundation and of the School, so there are introductory chapters on the Dominican Friary founded on the site and on Henry VIII, the School's founder. The author then highlights the contribution of Breconians to the Church, the military, to culture, including the visual arts, to the legal profession, to politics and to sport, predominantly rugby football. Alongside these chapters there are more personal reminiscences on families. The only female highlighted in this otherwise exclusively male story is represented in the personal account of her unique experience by Tori James, the first Welsh woman to climb Everest. All this is presented with sensitivity and affection. The author's pride in the achievements of Christ College is evident on every page. With an introduction by DP Davis.

Contract Law Minimalism

Contract Law Minimalism

Jonathan Morgan

Cambridge University Press

Commercial contract law is in every sense optional given the choice between legal systems and law and arbitration. Its 'doctrines' are in fact virtually all default rules. Contract Law Minimalism advances the thesis that commercial parties prefer a minimalist law that sets out to enforce what they have decided - but does nothing else. The limited capacity of the legal process is the key to this 'minimalist' stance. This book considers evidence that such minimalism is indeed what commercial parties choose to govern their transactions. It critically engages with alternative schools of thought, that call for active regulation of contracts to promote either economic efficiency or the trust and co-operation necessary for 'relational contracting'. The book also necessarily argues against the view that private law should be understood non-instrumentally (whether through promissory morality, corrective justice, taxonomic rationality, or otherwise). It sketches a restatement of English contract law in line with the thesis.
