"And I remember in frequent discourses with my master concerning the nature of manhood, in other parts of the world, having occasion to talk of lying and false representation... For he argued thus; that the use of speech was to make us understand one another, and to receive information of facts; now if any one said the thing which was not, these ends were defeated...he leaves me worse than in ignorance, for I am led to believe a thing black when it is white, and short when it is long." ― Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels Gulliver's Travels (1726) by Jonathan Swift recounts the story of Lemuel Gulliver, an English surgeon who takes to the seas when his business declines. His adventures begin as he travels to unknown and mysterious lands-Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib and the land of Houyhnhnms, where he encounters strange creatures with unusual body proportions, beliefs and values, customs and practices including horses that talk.

Jonathon Swift initially released The Battle of the Books, and Other Short Pieces as a compilation of satirical essays and pamphlets. The title article, "The War of the Books," is a satirical allegory in which numerous literary creations are portrayed as soldiers fighting in a conflict between ancient and contemporary books. Other pieces in the collection include "The Mechanical Operation of the Spirit," a satirical essay on the state of modern philosophical inquiry, "A Tale of a Tub," a satirical attack on religious hypocrisy, and "A Modest Proposal," a famous satirical essay suggesting that Irish poverty could be solved by eating their children. Swift uses his trademark wit and cutting sarcasm to criticize various societal issues throughout the anthology, including politics, religion, literature, and culture. His work is characterized by a caustic and sarcastic tone that often criticizes the hypocrisy and arrogance of the governing elites. Despite being more than three centuries old, the Battle of the Books, and Other Short Pieces is still regarded as a classic work of satire and English literature. Its impact may be observed in the writing of following authors like Kurt Vonnegut, George Orwell, and Oscar Wilde.

“Every man desires to live long, but no man wishes to be old.” As a survivor of a shipwreck, Lemuel Gulliver encounters some entirely absurd things – at first, he is in the land of Lilliputians, the tiny men; but later he ventures to the land of the giants. The tale continues to oscillate between the extremes as he meets immensely wise and scientifically aware people before being faced with excessive self-preoccupation and ignorance. Whatever that societal order, Gulliver consistently is a witness to the abuse of power. The satire often overemphasises the contraries in order to accentuate our individual and societal flaws and proneness to being corrupt and biased. In such a distinct way it rebukes human narrow-mindedness and accentuates our subjectivity. The novel’s multivalence has made it a celebrated children’s bedtime read – in particular, the first book – as well as a treasury of satirical metaphors and allusions that expose human and societal flaws in general and those of the English nobility in particular. The novel is an answer to Robinson Crusoe – it mocks Defoe’s protagonist’s too-good-to-be-true human aptness and reason. While some might find Swift’s modus operandi misanthropic, others will see him as a pragmatist who exemplifies how the excesses and polarities are detrimental and yet inescapable. Silly and bizarre, thought-provoking and alarming, this work is meant to be read and re-read as equally a jolly story and a philosophical or political collage of insights.
