The year 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Karl Barth. In the 20th century the great theologian had a significant impact on the church and theology in Germany and beyond. His commentary on the Epistle to the Romans, published in 1919, made his critical approach known to the public. This phase of his Dialectical Theology includes also two articles from 1922 that are reproduced here, with a commentary by the well-known systematic theologian Dietrich Korsch for use in church and school: Need and Promise of the Christian Proclamation and The Word of God as a Task of Theology. They address the situation of proclamation as constuting the focus of worship and the implications for theology. They show how the religious situation challenges theology and they are helpful for taking responsibility for the Christian faith in personal life.

Karl Barth is widely regarded as the most important theologian of the twentieth century, and his observations about the church and its place in a modern world continue to engage religious scholars nearly fifty years after his death. This English translation of the Swiss-published Conversations is a three-volume collection featuring correspondence, articles, interviews, and other short-form writings by Barth from 1959–1962. Among them are dialogues with representatives of the Evangelical Community Movement (1959); conversations with prison chaplains and a question-and-answer session with the Conference of the World Student Christian Federation (1960); discussions with Methodist preachers, Zurich pastors, and Catholic students of theology (1961); press conferences in New York and Chicago (1962); and an interview at the United Nations (1962). Within these pages, scholars and students will find a comprehensive view into Barth’s life and thinking about theology and its role in society today.

Karl Barth (1886-1968) was described by Pope Pius XII as the most important theologian since Thomas Aquinas, and his writings from the perspective of a renewed ‘theology of the Word of God’ continue to be a major influence among Christians, students of theology and preachers around the world today. His theology creatively re-works key Christian doctrines including the Trinity, Christology and salvation including therein, importantly, the doctrine of election. The product of the sustained work of more than three decades, his closely-reasoned fourteen volume magnum opus, The Church Dogmatics, represents the culmination of Barth’s own achievements and is regarded as perhaps one of the most significant theological works of all time. As part of the theological ethics integral to this dogmatic vision, The Christian Life offers a fascinating and provocative account of the Christian orientation toward ethical life from the perspective of divine reconciliation, setting forth a distinctive vision that sees prayer as the heart of a moral passion for the honour of God and the struggle for human righteousness. The work of one of the most influential Protestant theologians of the twentieth century, this Cornerstones edition includes a brand new introduction by Philip G. Ziegler, both examining and celebrating the message of one of Barth’s last and most suggestive writings.

World War I changed Karl Barth's theology forever. In this book William Klempa presents for the first time in English thirteen sermons that offer Barth's unique view and commentary on the Great War. Barth saw the war as “a unique time of God, believing it to represent God's judgment on militarism. The sermons reveal a deep strain of theological wrestling with the war's meaning, as Barth comes to see the conflict as the logical outcome of all human attempts to create God in our own image. As it demonstrates a decisive shift in Barth's early theology, this volume is essential for anyone who wishes to understand the twentieth century's greatest theologian.

Karl Barth was, without doubt, one of the most significant religious thinkers of modern times. His radical affirmation of the revealed truth of Christianity changed the course of Christian theology in the twentieth century and is a source of inspiration for countless believers. Pope Pius XII declared that there had been nothing like Karl Barth's later thought since Thomas Aquinas. God Here and Now offers a succinct and accessible overview of that thought. In it, Barth outlines his position on the fundamental tenets of Christian belief, from the decision of faith to the authority of the Bible, and from the interpretation of grace to the significance of Jesus Christ. In this way Barth challenges each and every reader to discover what it means to encounter God, here and now.

Karl Barth was one of the most important theologians of the 20th Century and, according to Pope Pius XII, the most important since Thomas Aquinas. His magnum opus, Church Dogmatics, runs to thirteen volumes and is one of the most substantial works of systematic theology ever written. On Religion presents a central chapter from Barth's masterpiece, in which he explores the phenomenon religion itself. Including a substantial introduction and commentary, this is an essential introduction to the Church Dogmatics.

Dr Barth's exposition of Philippians, first published in German in 1927, was not available in English before this translation by Dr James Leitch. It has important differences in procedure from the famous Romans, and should not be missed by any student of Dr Barth's development. The commentary is also of interest as having been written primarily for the non-theologian. It is intelligible without a knowledge of Greek, although it has insights for the New Testament specialist. Like the Epistle of joy itself, Dr Barth's Philippians reflects the concern of a pastor that ordinary Christians should set their priorities right.

This second collection of sermons preached by Karl Barth in Basel prison won the same high praise as its predecessor, Deliverance to the Captives. 'In a mere twelve sermons much of Barth's greatness comes through, his faith, his heart and compassion', wrote the Times Literary Supplement, and the Church of England Newspaper remarked; 'We find revealed here the deep and pastoral concern which lies behind the theological genius of Barth'. Whether beginning from the Old Testament or the New, Barth has a unique gift of becoming a vehicle for conveying the majesty and the glory of God who is at the same time the God of mercy and loving-kindness.
