e Awakening, originally titled A Solitary Soul, is a novel by Kate Chopin, first published in 1899. Set in New Orleans and on the Louisiana Gulf coast at the end of the 19th century, the plot centers on Edna Pontellier and her struggle to reconcile her increasingly unorthodox views on femininity and motherhood with the prevailing social attitudes of the turn-of-the-century American South. It is one of the earliest American novels that focuses on women's issues without condescension. It is also widely seen as a landmark work of early feminism, generating a mixed reaction from contemporary readers and critics. The novel's blend of realistic narrative, incisive social commentary, and psychological complexity makes The Awakening a precursor of American modernist literature; it prefigures the works of American novelists such as William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway and echoes the works of contemporaries such as Edith Wharton and Henry James. It can also be considered among the first Southern works in a tradition that would culminate with the modern masterpieces of Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, Katherine Anne Porter, and Tennessee Williams.

Kate Chopin, is now considered by some to have been a forerunner of the feminist authors of the 20th century. At Fault, set in New Orleans, is the first of her two novels." If ever asked to give her opinion of divorce, she might have replied that the question being one which did not immediately concern her, its remoteness had removed it from the range of her inquiry. . . . With the prejudices of her Catholic education coloring her sentiment, she instinctively shrank when the theme confronted her as one having even a remote reference to her own clean existence." At Fault is one of the first novels in the United States to focus on the ethics of divorce. The book also covers themes of economic restructuring in the American South after the Civil War, racial tension, alcoholism and violence. Within a decade of her death, Chopin was widely recognized as one of the leading writers of her time. In 1915, Fred Lewis Pattee wrote, "some of Chopin's] work is equal to the best that has been produced in France or even in America. She displayed] what may be described as a native aptitude for narration amounting almost to genius."

At the 'Cadian Ball," another well-known story in the collection, features the dashing Alc e Laballiere, Chopin's fictional portrayal of her own lover, Albert Sampite. While there, however, Edna become close to a young man named Robert Lebrun, but before they act on their mutual romantic interest in each other Robert leaves for Mexico. Edna is lonely without his companionship, and meets the attractive rake Alcée Arobin. Instead of spending her days concerned with household matters, Edna pursues her interest in painting. Rather than depending financially on her husband, Edna moves into a house of her own. By the time Robert returns, professing his love for Edna and his desire to marry her, Edna no longer believes in the limitations of traditional marriage. What will she choose instead? Is it possible to be a free woman and be responsible for the needs of others?
Kate Chopin's novel, a landmark work of early feminism, is seen as a pre-cursor to the works of American novelists such as William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway. The upper-class Creole society of New Orleans and the Southern Louisiana coast at the end of the 19th century is brought to audio in a stirring performance by Academy Award-winning actress Kim Basinger. Edna Pontellier, vacationing for the summer with her family on Grand Isle, has a great desire to find and live fully within her true self. However, her struggle to reconcile her unorthodox views on femininity and motherhood with the prevailing social attitudes of the turn-of-the-century South brings the story to a tragic conclusion. "The Awakening?s" blend of realistic narrative, incisive social commentary, and psychological complexity is the first in a tradition that would culminate in the modern masterpieces of Flannery O? Connor, Eudora Welty, and Tennessee Williams. "The Awakening" is part of Audible's A-List Collection, featuring the world's most celebrated actors narrating distinguished works of literature that each star had a hand in selecting.
