The papers composing this volume treat of the inner rather than of the outer life of Japan, -for which reason they have been grouped under the title Kokoro (heart). In these collected articles by Lafcadio Hearn, the author recounts a number of Japanese stories and observations on life in Japan in an attempt to "get to the heart of things". Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (27 June 1850 - 26 September 1904), known also by the Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo, was an international writer, known best for his books about Japan, especially his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories.
Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things (also Kaidan), often shortened to Kwaidan, is a book by Lafcadio Hearn which features several Japanese ghost stories and a brief non-fiction study on insects. It was later used as the basis for a movie called Kwaidan by Masaki Kobayashi in 1965. Kaidan is Japanese for "ghost story". Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (27 June 1850 - 26 September 1904), known also by the Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo, was an international writer, known best for his books about Japan, especially his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories.
Chinese Ghost Stories offers a selection of entertaining Chinese tales of the fantastical and paranormal. Author Lafcadio Hearn had a great affinity for the traditional ghost stories of China, and these stories clearly inspired him as he penned subsequent works. Set in richly atmospheric locales, these tales speak of heroic sacrifice, chilling horror, eerie beauty and otherworldly intervention. The six ghost stories include: The Soul of the Great Bell The Story of Ming Yi The Legend of Zhi Nu The Return of Yan Zhenjing The Tradition of the Tea Plant The Tale of the Porcelain God This completely reset and pinyin-converted edition of Hearn's classic work contains a new foreword by Victoria Cass, which places the stories, their author, and his love for the strange and mysterious into perspective. If you're seeking insights into the traditional Chinese world of ghosts, goblins and demons—or just want to feel a chill run down your spine on a dark and lonely night—then this book is the perfect companion.
Lafcadio Hearn's La Cuisine Creole is the first Creole cookbook, one of the great rare classics of the culture. Among its recipes, collected "from leading chefs and noted Creole housewives," are gumbos with oysters, okra, and shrimp; "grenouilles frites" or fried frogs; plum, sweet potato, and gingerbread pudding; and a number of beverages, several of which use absinthe as the main ingredient. Lafcadio Hearn spent close to a dozen years in New Orleans, starting in 1877. During that time, his writings significantly shaped the impressions, myths, and symbols of the Crescent City, many of which live on to this day. Although Hearn was born in Greece in 1850, he chronicled Creole culture and the natural and domestic worlds of New Orleans - most notably its language and cuisine - as if he were born and raised there. Later in life, he became a citizen of Japan and is considered by the Japanese to be one of the greatest Japanese writers of his time.
Lafcadio Hearn's "non-fiction" article was originally published by Harper's Magazine in 1889. Detailing skulduggery and supernatural phenomenon on the island of Mozambique, 'The Country of the Comers-Back' marked the first mention of the zombie in Western literature. Many of these zombie stories, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
