Swann's Way, In Search of Lost Time (Royal Collector's Edition) (Case Laminate Hardcover with Jacket)
The Narrator is a sensitive young man who wishes to become a writer, whose identity is kept vague. As a child, his anxiety at leaving his mother at night and his attempts to force her to come and kiss him goodnight, culminates in a spectacular success, when his father suggests that his mother stay the night with him. The Narrator's anxiety leads to manipulation, much like the manipulation employed by his invalid aunt Leonie and all the lovers in the entire book, who use the same methods of petty tyranny to manipulate and possess their loved ones. Swann's Way is considered to be Marcel Proust's most prominent work, known both for its length and its theme of involuntary memory, the most famous example being the "episode of the madeleine" which occurs early in the first volume. While there is an array of symbolism in the work, it is rarely defined through explicit "keys" leading to moral, romantic or philosophical ideas. The significance of what is happening is often placed within the memory or in the inner contemplation of what is described. This focus on the relationship between experience, memory and writing and the radical de-emphasizing of the outward plot, have become staples of the modern novel but were almost unheard of in 1913. This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.

When the night falls, the unnamed narrator finds it difficult to reign in his galloping thoughts. Night for him means profound loneliness and also the only time when his thoughts and memories come back unbidden, often waking him up in the middle of the night. His thoughts involuntarily go back his past, his country home in Combray and the people who once populated that time... "For a long time I used to go to bed early. Sometimes, when I had put out my candle, my eyes would close so quickly that I had not even time to say "I'm going to sleep." And half an hour later the thought that it was time to go to sleep would awaken me; I would try to put away the book which, I imagined, was still in my hands, and to blow out the light; I had been thinking all the time..." Marcel Proust (1871-1922) was a French novelist, critic, and essayist best known for his monumental novel la Recherche du Temps Perdu (1913-1927). He is considered by English critics and writers to be one of the most influential authors of the 20th century. Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff (1889-1930) was a Scottish writer, most famous for his English translation of most of Proust's la recherche du temps perdu, which he published under the Shakespearean title Remembrance of Things Past.

Within a Budding Grove beautifully examines the complex adolescent relationships that the unnamed young narrator begins to witness all around him, including the first pangs of love and the ardent adolescent desires. But most importantly it explores the unbridgeable gap between childhood innocence and the disappointment of adulthood. The novel was scheduled to be published in 1914 but was delayed by the onset of World War I. When published, the novel was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 1919. "My mother, when it was a question of our having M. de Norpois to dinner for the first time, having expressed her regret that Professor Cottard was away from home, and that she herself had quite ceased to see anything of Swann, since either of these might have helped to entertain the old Ambassador . . ."

And half an hour later the thought that it was time to go to sleep would awaken me; I would try to put away the book which, I imagined, was still in my hands, and to blow out the light; I had been thinking all the time, while I was asleep, of what I had just been reading, but my thoughts had run into a channel of their own, until I myself seemed actually to have become the subject of my book: a church, a quartet, the rivalry between Fran ois I and Charles V. This impression would persist for some moments after I was awake; it did not disturb my mind, but it lay like scales upon my eyes and prevented them from registering the fact that the candle was no longer burning.

Remembrance of Things Past is one of the monuments of twentieth-century literature. Neville Jason's unabridged recording of the work runs to 150 hours. The Captive is the fifth of seven volumes. The protagonist's obsessive love for Albertine makes her virtually a captive in his Paris apartment. He suspects she may be attracted to her own sex. This version is based on the translation by C. K. Scott Moncrieff.
