A capacious history of decolonization from the decline of empires to the era of globalization Empires, until recently, were everywhere. They shaped borders, stirred conflicts, and set the terms of international politics. With the collapse of empire came a fundamental reorganization of our world. Decolonization unfolded across territories as well as within them. Its struggles became internationalized and transnational, as much global campaigns of moral disarmament against colonial injustice as local contests of arms. In this expansive history, Martin Thomas tells the story of decolonization and its intrinsic link to globalization. He traces the connections between these two transformative processes: the end of formal empire and the acceleration of global integration, market reorganization, cultural exchange, and migration. The End of Empires and a World Remade shows how profoundly decolonization shaped the process of globalization in the wake of empire collapse. In the second half of the twentieth century, decolonization catalyzed new international coalitions; it triggered partitions and wars; and it reshaped North-South dynamics. Globalization promised the decolonized greater access to essential resources, to wider networks of influence, and to worldwide audiences, but its neoliberal variant has reinforced economic inequalities and imperial forms of political and cultural influences. In surveying these two codependent histories across the world, from Latin America to Asia, Thomas explains why the deck was so heavily stacked against newly independent nations. Decolonization stands alongside the great world wars as the most transformative event of twentieth-century history. In The End of Empires and a World Remade, Thomas offers a masterful analysis of the greatest process of state-making (and empire-unmaking) in modern history.
Mythical Monsters, Sunken Continents and Aliens
This book looks at some of the more peripheral aspects of unusual phenomena which have been perhaps witnessed, or remembered in folklore. but never proven. For a long time there have been stories of Reptile People inhabiting caverns beneath Earth's surface. It is shown here that these stories are credible, and the locations of some of their hideaways have been identified. It feels as though there have always been stories of Ghosts and Poltergeists, but it has proved possible to show that these are all a consequence of two factors, the "Stone Tape Theory" and the mischievous actions of some of our long-time resident aliens - the Fae. The existence of Sea Monsters has always been denied, but one after another, they have been found. First came the Giant Squid, then the Colossal Squid, and then, most excitingly, the existence of Nessie has been proven, not as a lonely inhabitant of Loch Ness, but as an ocean-wide phenomenon. It is been shown that of the three claimed lost continents, at least Mu can probably be identified, Atlantis is likely to have existed in the distant past, but there are too many possible location to pick from, and Lemuria is very unlikely to have existed as a real place in the Indian Ocean. However, in practice Atlantis is an idea rather than a reality. It is probably one of a series of bases used by Aliens whilst they attempt to raise the morality and technical ability of Humans. By hiding them in places which would be flooded at the end of the Ice Age, they made certain that Humanity would not discover their ruins at some time.

Whether you are sailing, motorboating, pottering around in a dinghy, racing, going fishing offshore or embarking on an ocean crossing, this is the essential pocket-sized guide to first aid you need to have on board. Aimed specifically at boaters, it covers every medical problem you may encounter on board, from common issues such as seasickness and sunburn to more serious problems such as broken bones and emergencies including heart attacks and strokes. Every problem is graded for its seriousness, indicating whether it is something you can treat yourself that needn’t mean the end of the trip, or whether you should head back to shore or summon help immediately. It guides you in how to make someone comfortable and, in the most serious circumstances, improve their chances of making a full recovery. Clear, full-colour step by step diagrams illustrate succinct instructions for quick reference. The book also includes a guide on what to include in your on-board first aid kit, which differs depending on where you are going, and how long and how far you will be away from the nearest assistance. A handy reference to have on board wherever you are going, this book will boost your confidence, help you solve medical problems, and minimise the dangers in emergencies.

For over 50 years Heavy Weather Sailing has been regarded as the ultimate international authority on surviving storms at sea aboard sailing and motor vessels. In this book, former Commodore of the Ocean Cruising Club Martin Thomas brings together a wealth of expert advice from many of the great sailors of the present, including fresh accounts of yachts overtaken by extreme weather, from Ewan Southby-Tailyour, Alex Whitworth and Dag Pike to Larry and Lin Pardey, Matt Sheahan and Andrew Claughton. The expert advice section has been updated in line with current thinking, with major new additions tackling preventing or coping with lightning strikes, navigating in heavy weather with both paper and electronic charts, the choice and use of tenders in severe weather, and special problems faced by the new generation of foiled cruising boats. For the first time the book also covers the unique challenges presented by weather in high latitudes, with more yachts crossing the Drake Passage and attempting the North West Passage. These revisions ensure that Heavy Weather Sailing is as relevant, useful and instructive for today’s sailor venturing offshore as it ever was. This is the definitive book for crews of any size contemplating voyages out of sight of land anywhere in the world, whether racing or cruising. It gives a clear message regarding the preparations required, and the tactics to consider when it comes on to blow.
Arguing about Empire

Arguing about Empire

Arguing about Empire analyses the most divisive arguments about empire between Europe's two leading colonial powers from the age of high imperialism to the post-war era of decolonization. Focusing on the domestic contexts underlying imperial rhetoric, Arguing about Empire adopts a case-study approach, treating key imperial debates as historical episodes to be investigated in depth. The episodes in question have been selected both for their chronological range, their variety, and, above all, their vitriol. Some were straightforward disputes; others involved cooperation in tense circumstances. These include the Tunisian and Egyptian crises of 1881-2, which saw France and Britain establish new North African protectorates, ostensibly in co-operation, but actually in competition; the Fashoda Crisis of 1898, when Britain and France came to the brink of war in the aftermath of the British re-conquest of Sudan; the Moroccan crises of 1905 and 1911, early tests of the Entente Cordiale, when Britain lent support to France in the face of German threats; the 1922 Chanak crisis, when that imperial Entente broke down in the face of a threatened attack on Franco-British forces by Kemalist Turkey; World War Two, which can be seen in part as an undeclared colonial war between the former allies, complicated by the division of the French Empire between De Gaulle's Free French forces and those who remained loyal to the Vichy Regime; and finally the 1956 Suez intervention, when, far from defusing another imperial crisis, Britain colluded with France and Israel to invade Egypt -- the culmination of the imperial interference that began some eighty years earlier.

Theoretical Modeling of Vibrational Spectra in the Liquid Phase

This thesis provides a comprehensive description of methods used to compute the vibrational spectra of liquid systems by molecular dynamics simulations. The author systematically introduces theoretical basics and discusses the implications of approximating the atomic nuclei as classical particles. The strengths of the methodology are demonstrated through several different examples. Of particular interest are ionic liquids, since their properties are governed by strong and diverse intermolecular interactions in the liquid state. As a novel contribution to the field, the author presents an alternative route toward infrared and Raman intensities on the basis of a Voronoi tessellation of the electron density. This technique is superior to existing approaches regarding the computational resources needed. Moreover, this book presents an innovative approach to obtaining the magnetic moments and vibrational circular dichroism spectra of liquids, and demonstrates its excellent agreement withexperimental reference data.
