Mrs. Pittman's well-to-do Pittsburgh family didn't approve of her marriage, so the young bride moved away and lost touch with her relatives. Years later, she has returned to her native city as a widow and now runs a boarding house, one of the only jobs available to respectable women in the early twentieth century. Rooms at Mrs. Pittman's place are cheap because of the annual floods from the Allegheny River, which inundate the building's basement and first floor. Ordinarily, the overflowing waters are just a mild nuisance but this year the flood takes a sinister turn when a headless corpse emerges from the waters. One of Mrs. Pittman's tenants, actress Jennie Brice, has disappeared and the landlady is certain not only that the unidentified body is Jennie's but also that Jennie's husband is the killer. Lacking evidence, the police have dropped the case but Mrs. Pittman's discovery of a broken knife and blood-stained rope are enough to strengthen her resolve. An eager young reporter and other amateur detectives join Mrs. Pittman in her crusade to solve the crime, and their efforts lead to a budding romance that might help bring the lonely landlady back into the family fold.
Lawrence Blakely, attorney-at-law, sets off by train to deliver valuable documents in a criminal case. His ride will be eventful. Along the way he'll encounter romance, treachery, a train wreck, even a murder in which he'll be implicated. Who's after Blakely and his papers -- why? The first detective novel to appear on national bestseller lists, THE MAN IN LOWER TEN is still a great read almost ninety years after its publication. It has all the thrills of a contemporary whodunit and a satiric edge that gently mocks the conventions of male detective fiction.
Ralph Leslie, a recent graduate from medical school, is recovering from typhoid and is bored as can be. Penniless, all he can think about is getting out of the hospital and sailing on the yacht that he has been watching outside his hospital room window. With a few favors from a good friend, Leslie signs up as a member of the crew. Little does he know that on it's maiden voyage as a pleasure cruise, blood will be shed by the innocent and fear will reign supreme until they are able to return to port.

The Case of Jennie Brice is a crime novel by the American writer Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876 - 1956) set in 1904 in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (which since 1907 has been a part of the city of Pittsburgh). It tells the story of a blood-stained rope and towel, and a missing tenant, Jenny Brice-all of which convince Mrs. Pittman that a murder has been committed in her boarding house. But without a body, the police say there is no case. Pittman tries to ferret out the killer by using the key to Jennie's apartment to investigate.

This pair of essays represent a fascinating glimpse of the gender rights rhetoric of the early twentieth century. Rambling by, turns patronizing, sexist, admiring and reverential, the authors reflect on many topics from suffrage to fashion. A quick read that is both humorous and thought-provoking.
