Mary Shelley

First published in 1818, 'Frankenstein' is the classic gothic horror novel by Mary Shelley, an English novelist. Victor Frankenstein, a youthful university student, becomes smitten with uncovering the secret to creating life. Over several months, he makes a creature out of body parts swiped from graves. Yet after he brings his work to life, Victor becomes fearful and, desiring nothing to do with his creation, deserts the 'monster'. Forsaken by the world because of his appearance, the monster lives in hiding but probes for his creator. When he confronts Victor, the monster beseeches for kindness, and receiving none, intimidates retribution. Shelley's masterpiece still maintains a powerful grip on fantasy and has been the stimulant for considerable horror movies, television, and stage adaptations.

Want to experience horror and dread in its most nascent forms. Well here is Frankenstein, made by the celebrated author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. The book originated out of a competition between her, her husband Percy, and Lord Byron; to see who writes the best horror story. She won the competition, thereby bringing into the world one of its most memorable fictional characters and stories. The story begins with a fictional correspondence between Captain Robert Walton and his sister, Margaret Walton Saville. He tells her about his expedition to the North Pole, where he meets Dr Victor Frankenstein. This is one of the first versions of the story and is greatly recommended for everyone.

For years Victor Frankenstein labors to create a new race of intelligent beings. He spends his nights scrounging human and animal body parts from graveyards, slaughterhouses, and hospital dissection rooms. By day he experiments in his secret laboratory, perfecting the creature whom, he believes, will worship him as a god. When he succeeds, Frankenstein is horrified by the ugly brutishness of the patchwork being he has brought to life. Rather than exult in his accomplishment, he runs from it, retreating to the comfort of long-neglected friends and family. Frankenstein has, indeed, created a monster . . . not by animating dead flesh but by abandoning his creation. Now, the monster is out for revenge.
