Matthew Johnson

This book explores the role of private mining rights in the utopian imaginary of space colonisation. It presents a transdisciplinary account of the new and evolving legislative frameworks that have been established in anticipation of commercial exploitation of the mineral resources of the off-world frontier. Written in an engaging style, the book investigates a novel case study in the history of capitalism and 'the commons': the emergence of a nascent space mining industry, undergirded by a contentious legislative framework. In 2015, the US passed laws that would recognise the claims of US corporations to own and sell space resources. This unilateral act of pre-emptive law-making would appear to contravene the terms of the UN Outer Space Treaty (1967), which declared that the exploration and use of outer space should be ‘for the benefit of all mankind’ and ‘not subject to national appropriation’. Using this central dynamic between privately held mining rights and outer space as a 'global commons', Matthew Johnson constructs an historical sociology of space mining – from the deep historical roots of common and private property to the contemporary networks of neoliberalism that have engaged with the commercialisation of space activity. The anticipatory expansion of private property claims beyond the Earth both resonates with and problematises the ‘terrain’ of political history, such as the tensions between states and markets, public law and private power, ‘the commons’ and exclusive property. The emerging cosmopolitics of off-world private property mirrors (and is often explicitly embedded within) neoliberal geopolitics, prompting urgent questions about how we can reaffirm principles of democracy and ‘common heritage’ in the international laws of Earth and space. This book is compelling reading for anyone interested in the social study of space, law, economics, technology, politics and property rights.

Modernize grammar instruction with language lessons that inspire and engage students! Grammar and language instruction has long been, in the words of Brock Haussamen in Grammar Alive!, "the skunk at the garden party of the language arts" that turns many eager learners into disengaged participants. This type of disengagement, and resulting student struggles, have long been the norm, not the exception, when it comes to grammar and language lessons. But why? Why does grammar—something so relevant and essential that we use it in the creation of every syllable we say, write, or think—often end up as one of the dullest and most disconnected parts of the ELA classroom? Good Grammar: Joyful and Affirming Language Lessons That Work for More Students seeks to answer that question and to offer practical, on-the-ground solutions for making grammar and language instruction more accessible, practical, and connected to students’ reading, writing, and most importantly, the deep well of language knowledge they bring with them already. At the core of the book are six key practices for creating language instruction that comes across clearer, sticks better, transfers easier, and ultimately instills a love of language, all while teaching major grammatical concepts. Written by a practicing classroom teacher, this book offers Ready-to-go lessons and a recommended sequenceExplanation of essential grammar and language concepts for teachers who need to refresh their own understanding of grammar and language topics and conceptsOver a hundred modern, engaging, wide-ranging, and diverse mentor text examplesSuggestions on how to introduce important linguistic concepts into secondary classes, including lessons about how language develops; how to define, examine, and celebrate dialects/familects/idiolects; and protocols for discussing concepts like code-meshing and "correctness"Examination of broader trends concerning what works and what doesn’t work in regards to grammar and language instruction, with a goal of giving teachers the tools they need to create their own grammar and language curriculum that engages, inspires, and transfers more easily into student writing and life beyond the classroom walls. The title—Good Grammar—seeks to remind us that grammar doesn’t have to be boring or feel punitive. Instead, it can be a force for good for more students, affirming who they are, honoring the language expertise they bring with them, and helping them to bring their unique voices to the page.

Matthew Johnson's second poetry volume constructs a space where the rural communities of Upstate, the suburban living of the Lower Hudson Valley, and the metropolitan landscapes of the City are woven together in a mosaic snapshot. A collection of poems where the historical and cultural traditions of New York State meet, the reader is acquainted not only with seminal figures across the cultural channels of literature, music, and sports, such as Washington Irving, Paul Robeson, and the '86 Mets, but to the author himself. Tender, playful, and meditative, Johnson presents stories that he has lived, and shares others that have been passed down through familial storytelling around the kitchen table and cookout barbecue pit." Matthew Johnson offers a rich tapestry of stories drawn from the lives of historical figures, professional athletes, musicians, and more, to address divisions, struggles, triumphs, and realities. He writes, "the long cool is whittled down to the essentials of the essentials," carving out an image of America in all its smooth and sharp edges. His language moves from direct to musical, narrative to lyric, in a style that interrogates as it engages and invites."--Grant Clauser, author of Muddy Dragon on the Road to Heaven"With its brilliant homages to Nas and Red Foxx, Matthew Johnson's Far from New York State creates a true jazz story, a collage, or a jigsaw puzzle--it's full of play and worthy of being read ... Johnson opens up a space and lets the poems tell their own story."--Rochelle Spencer, author of AfroSurrealism: The African Diaspora's Surrealist Fiction"Even from 35,000 feet, baseball diamonds look like baseball diamonds. In Johnson's poems you can still see the diamonds, though they are sketched on the blacktop with chalk or manifest by construction comes and fire hydrants on the minds of neighborhood kids. In the same way the giants of Jazz and Blues emerge from the poetic landscape and lend us a couple of bars, enliven and vivify a world that refuses to go sterile, because it has deep roots. Matthew Johnson's poetry gives these roots rain and mixes the demotic and the mythic to create a landscape of verse where one can imagine Duke Ellington and Satchel Page tipping caps to each other before disappearing into the poetic mist of Johnson's rich language that roils beneath each line. When the myth and the mist have cleared you can still see the baseball diamonds, the kids still pretending to be Nomo and Sosa, you can faintly hear the blues, and smell the newly oiled leather."--Aaron Dylan Graham, author of Blood StripesPoetry. African & African American Studies.

Over the last sixty years, administrators on college campuses nationwide have responded to black campus activists by making racial inclusion and inequality compatible. This bold argument is at the center of Matthew Johnson's powerful and controversial book. Focusing on the University of Michigan, often a key talking point in national debates about racial justice thanks to the contentious Gratz v. Bollinger 2003 Supreme Court case, Johnson argues that UM leaders incorporated black student dissent selectively into the institution's policies, practices, and values. This strategy was used to prevent activism from disrupting the institutional priorities that campus leaders deemed more important than racial justice. Despite knowing that racial disparities would likely continue, Johnson demonstrates that these administrators improbably saw themselves as champions of racial equity. What Johnson contends in Undermining Racial Justice is not that good intentions resulted in unforeseen negative consequences, but that the people who created and maintained racial inequities at premier institutions of higher education across the United States firmly believed they had good intentions in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. The case of the University of Michigan fits into a broader pattern at elite colleges and universities and is a cautionary tale for all in higher education. As Matthew Johnson illustrates, inclusion has always been a secondary priority, and, as a result, the policies of the late 1970s and 1980s ushered in a new and enduring era of racial retrenchment on campuses nationwide.

Although the Bigfoot phenomena has fascinated humanity worldwide throughout history, the Patterson/Gimlin film, shot in 1967, most certainly caught the world's attention like never before. However, most people don't know that the famous film also kicked off a carefully thought-out game plan implemented by the Bigfoot Forest People to accomplish a life-saving agenda. Regarding the Bigfoot Forest People, there are never any accidents. On the contrary, they do everything with intention and purpose. On July 1, 2000, Dr. Matthew A. Johnson and his family encountered a Bigfoot on the mountain above the Oregon Caves National Park. Since that world-famous encounter occurred, Dr. Johnson spent sixteen years of his life pursuing the Bigfoot Forest People with persistence and relentless commitment. He transitioned from an aggressive "Old School" paparazzi money shot researcher to a habituator and on to an interactionist. Bigfoot: A Fifty Year Journey Come Full Circle ties several stories and experiences together to help explain who the Bigfoot Forest People are, where they come from, and why they're here. In short, there is no other Bigfoot book like this one. You are guaranteed that this book will overwhelm you with the truth and promises to blow your mind in the process. The Bigfoot research community is going to change in a significant positive direction.

In his first book, Bigfoot: A Fifty-Year Journey Come Full Circle, Dr. Matthew A. Johnson shared how he was able to learn how to interact with the Bigfoot Forest People (AKA, the Xanue). He also shared how he helped them, with the assistance of his wife, Cynthia, and also Mike Kincaid, Steve Bachmann, and Grady Johnson, to bring their remaining family and friends through the portal from their dying home world to the Earth via the EXODUS. In this book, The Xanue: Befriending The Bigfoot Forest People, Dr. Johnson shares about who the Xanue are, where they're from, and why they're here. He discusses their history and how and why the Xanue Council of Twelve selected him as their Ambassador ("The 13"). Then Zorth, the head of the Xanue Council of 12, answers 400 questions submitted to him via 125 people. Finally, all of the above is corroborated by 30 mind-blowing eyewitnes's testimonials from people from all walks of life who live in the USA, Canada, and England. Dr. Matthew and Cynthia Johnson have helped hundreds of people connect with the Xanue via their books, seminars, videos, conferences, and summer camps. In addition to learning more about the Xanue via reading this book, you may also be interested in attending Dr. Matthew and Cynthia Johnson's annual Xanue University Conference which is hosted in Centrailia, Washington. You may also be interested in attending their summer Camp Xanue "Night Sit and Sleep Over" weekend events hosted at their home during the months of June, July, and/or August.
