This book illustrates, in detail, the state of the art in the multidisciplinary science of multi-physics optimization. In a context of the perpetual search for improved industrial competitiveness, the evolution of product design and optimization methods and tools appears to be a strategic necessity in view of the imperative to reduce costs. In the aeronautics sector, resources are mainly focused on forecasting and controlling the costs incurred by failures that occur at commissioning, during the warranty period, and during aircraft operation. However, in the future, new contracts for the sale of aeronautical equipment will become increasingly oriented toward sales by the hour of operation. The aim of this book is to propose new methods for reliability-based optimization, enabling an analysis of a system’s life cycle. The V-cycle allows development phases to be viewed in terms of development time and levels of integration complexity. Multi-physics Optimization is dedicated to optimization methods for multi-physics problems. Each chapter clearly sets out the techniques used and developed and accompanies them with illustrative examples. The book is aimed at students but is also a valuable resource for practicing engineers and research lecturers.

Probabilistic modeling of system performance, built primarily on the foundation of reliability theory, is referred to as reliability-based modeling. This book progressively builds up the functional complexity of system modeling. It starts by modeling the simplest system that can be designed, and then moves to the functional modeling of the multi-state system, step-by-step. Reliability-based Modeling of System Performance deals with modeling the functioning of systems by presenting its concepts, methods and mathematical tools. It is accessible to engineering students and academics who have already acquired basic knowledge of probability theory, applied statistics, differential calculus, integrals, combinatorial calculus and Boolean algebra.

Arab cultural representation of the United States has variously changed and developed since 9/11, and again in the wake of the protests in 2011 and the ensuing political turmoil in Egypt, Libya, Yemen, and of course, Syria. Taking this into account, Mohamed offers an examination of the ways in which stereotypes of America are both presented and challenged through cinema, fiction and the wider media and intellectual production. Rather than seeing this process as one where the Middle East reacts to and attempts to negotiate with western modernity, Mohamed instead highlights the significant interplay of religion, pop culture and politics and the role they play in shaping the complex relation between America and the nations of the Middle East.
