The last work published by Moses Mendelssohn during his lifetime, Morning Hours (1785) is also the most sustained presentation of his mature epistemological and metaphysical views, all elaborated in the service of presenting proofs for the existence of God. But Morning Hours is much more than a theoretical treatise. It also plays a central role in the drama of the Pantheismusstreit, Mendelssohn's "dispute" with F. H. Jacobi over the nature and scope of Lessing's attitude toward Spinoza and "pantheism". As the latest salvo in a war of texts with Jacobi, Morning Hours is also Mendelssohn's attempt to set the record straight regarding his beloved Lessing in this connection, not least by demonstrating the absence of any practical (i.e., religious or moral) difference between theism and a "purified pantheism".

This is the first modern translation of Moses Mendelssohn's classic work of 1767, the Ph don. It includes Mendelssohn's own introduction and appendix, as well as footnotes and explanatory introduction by David Shavin. (Charles Cullen's translation of 1789 is the only other extant translation.) The modern Socrates of the German classical period, Mendelssohn has created a beautiful translation and elaboration of Plato's Ph do led to a revolution in thought, and a subsequent renaissance in Germany. The debt of the German classical period to ancient Greece is embodied in Mendelssohn's Ph don, as is the promise of the American Revolution. The translation and accompanying notes recapture Mendelssohn's unique marriage of depth of thought and breadth of appeal.

This volume provides German translations of the texts published in the Hebraischen Schriften I (JubA Band 14) (Hebrew Writings I). It contains Mendelssohn's Kohelet musar (Preacher of Morality), an early work loosely based on the model of the moral weeklies, his commentaries on the logic of Maimonides (Bi'ur millot ha higgajon) and on Ecclesiastes in connection the texts written in connection with his Pentateuch edition by such scholars as S. Dubno and N. H. Wessely (cf. JubA Band 15,1), moreover philosophical commentaries, letters, a poem and documents of the Jewish community in Berlin. The annotated transcription of the list of subscribers reveals a document which is important for the reception history of the Pentateuch edition. Apart from the commentary on Ecclesiastes and the pamphlet on the Pentateuch edition, which are published in contemporary translations by Johann Jacob Rabe and Christian Gottlob Meyer, this volume provides access to Mendelssohn's texts in a new and for the first time complete translation. (For translations of the treatise Hanefesch (The Soul) as well as of the introduction to the Pentateuch edition, cf. JubA Volume 3,1, and Volume 9,1.)
