The existence of this story, posthumously published, was not known to any one but Hawthorne himself, until some time after his death, when the manuscript was found among his papers. The preparation and copying of his Note-Books for the press occupied the most of Mrs. Hawthorne's available time during the interval from 1864 to 1870; but in the latter year, having decided to publish the unfinished romance, she began the task of putting together its loose sheets and deciphering the handwriting, which, towards the close of Hawthorne's life, had grown somewhat obscure and uncertain. Her death occurred while she was thus engaged, and the transcription was completed by her daughters. The book was then issued simultaneously in America and England, in 1871.

Mother Ceres was exceedingly fond of her daughter Proserpina, and seldom let her go alone into the fields. But, just at the time when my story begins, the good lady was very busy, because she had the care of the wheat, and the Indian corn, and the rye and barley and, in short, of the crops of every kind, all over the earth; and as the season had thus far been uncommonly backward, it was necessary to make the harvest ripen more speedily than usual. So she put on her turban, made of poppies (a kind of flower which she was always noted for wearing), and got into her car drawn by a pair of winged dragons, and was just ready to set off. "Dear mother," said Proserpina, "I shall be very lonely while you are away. May I not run down to the shore, and ask some of the sea nymphs to come up out of the waves and play with me?"

Described by Herman Melville as being “as deep as Dante”, ‘Young Goodman Brown’ is set during the Salem witch trials and features the sort of narrative ambiguities and troubling uncertainties over the reality of events that Hawthorne was known for, leading readers to ponder what they have read long after the last page has been turned. Rich in allegory and symbolism, and suffused with darkness, tragedy, satire and the supernatural, the tales in this collection, written by a master of the short-story genre, delve into the conflict between good and evil, explore the concept of Original Sin and bring to life the moralistic and superstitious early days of the New England colonies.

Complete in One Volume"To this little book, we would say, 'Live ever, sweet, sweet book.' It comes from the hand of a man of genius.... Hawthorne's writing] is characterized by a large proportion of feminine elements, depth and tenderness of feeling, exceeding purity of mind." --Henry Wadsworth LongfellowHawthorne's writings are "a pure and living stream of manly thought and feeling, which characterizes always the true man, the Christian, the republican and the patriot." --Orestes Brownson, The Boston Quarterly ReviewHawthorne's short stories "rivet the attention of the reader]. The style of Hawthorne is purity itself. His tone is singularly effective--wild, plaintive, thoughtful, and in full accordance with his themes.... We look upon him as one of the few men of indisputable genius to whom our country has as yet given birth." --Edgar Allan Poe, The Broadway JournalThe most influential book of 1837. --The Grolier ClubNathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was a novelist and short story writer. Best known for The Scarlet Letter (1850), The House of the Seven Gables (1851), The Blithedale Romance (1852), and The Marble Faun (1860), as well as the political biography of his friend Life of Franklin Pierce (1852), his first writings were short stories published in a number of magazines and annuals. In the 1830s, he served as the editor of the American Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge, and then accepted a political appointment at the Boston Custom House. Twice-Told Tales was sponsored by Hawthorne's friend, Horation Bridge (a lawyer at the time, he later joined the Navy and rose to the rank of commodore). It sold moderately well when it was published, and then saw a resurgence after the publication of The Scarlet Letter.
Hawthorne Illustrated: Three Stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne has impressed many literary critics and influenced many authors over time. He became famous early in his career and his fame has endured. In Hawthorne Illustrated, master pen & ink illustrator Marc Johnson-Pencook interprets three of Nathaniel Hawthorne's best stories: "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment", "Mr. Higginbotham's Catastrophe", and "Feathertop". Here's a few of the many renowned authors and literary critics who have praised Hawthorne and his stories: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Famous American Poet --- Hawthorne's stories, though in prose, are written nevertheless by a poet. He looks upon all things in the spirit of love, and with lively sympathies. His stories come from the hand of a man of genius. Flannery O'Connor, Iconic American Author --- My opinion of Hawthorne is that he was a very great author indeed... I feel more kinship with him than any other American. Henry James, Author, 3-time Nobel Prize Nominee --- Hawthorne was a beautiful, natural, original genius. His work will remain; it is too original and exquisite to pass away; among the men of imagination he will always have his niche. He combined in a singular degree the spontaneity of the imagination with a haunting care for moral problems. In the field of American letters, Hawthorne is the most valuable example of the American genius.

Fanshawe, first novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, published in 1828 at his own expense. Hawthorne wrote Fanshawe while a student at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Soon after, he deemed the work to be of such derivative and mediocre quality that he attempted, unsuccessfully, to destroy all existing copies. The book's treatment of plot and character development were derived chiefly from the conventions of Gothic novels and the works of Sir Walter Scott. This novel started out strong so I was pumped. Hawthorne's use of language is great and the premise was interesting. We are introduced to a love triangle between the heiress Ellen, the immature student Edward and the sickly scholar Fanshawe and things start to go south after the villain steps in.

Many of the tales collected in Mosses from an Old Manse are allegories and, typical of Hawthorne, focus on the negative side of human nature. Hawthorne's friend Herman Melville noted this aspect in his review "Hawthorne and His Mosses": This black conceit pervades him through and through. You may be witched by his sunlight, -transported by the bright gildings in the skies he builds over you; but there is the blackness of darkness beyond; and even his bright gildings but fringe and play upon the edges of thunder-clouds. William Henry Channing noted in his review of the collection, in The Harbinger, its author "had been baptized in the deep waters of Tragedy", and his work was dark with only brief moments of "serene brightness" which was never brighter than "dusky twilight".

The Blithedale Romance (1852) is Nathaniel Hawthorne's third major romance. In Hawthorne (1879), Henry James called it "the lightest, the brightest, the liveliest" of Hawthorne's "unhumorous fictions." The story takes place primarily in the utopian community of Blithedale, presumably in the mid-1800s. The main character, Miles Coverdale, embarks on a quest for the betterment of the world through the agrarian lifestyle and community of the Blithedale Farm. The story begins with a conversation between Coverdale and Old Moodie, a character who reappears throughout the story. The legend of the mysterious Veiled Lady is introduced; she is a popular clairvoyant who disappears unannounced from the social scene. Coverdale then makes the voyage to Blithedale, where he is introduced to such characters as Zenobia and Mr. and Mrs. Silas Foster. At their first community dinner they are interrupted by the arrival of Hollingsworth, a previous acquaintance of Coverdale's, who is carrying a frail, pale girl. Though Hollingsworth believes the girl (whose age is never clarified) is an expected guest, none of the Blithedale citizens recognize her. She immediately develops a strong attachment to Zenobia, and reveals her name to be Priscilla.

Roger Malvin's Burial (+Biography and Bibliography) (Matte Cover Finish): One of the few incidents of Indian warfare naturally susceptible of the moonlight of romance was that expedition undertaken for the defence of the frontiers in the year 1725, which resulted in the well-remembered "Lovell's Fight." Imagination, by casting certain circumstances judicially into the shade, may see much to admire in the heroism of a little band who gave battle to twice their number in the heart of the enemy's country. The open bravery displayed by both parties was in accordance with civilized ideas of valor; and chivalry itself might not blush to record the deeds of one or two individuals.

Hawthorne's spectacular and thoughtful tale of love within a utopia demonstrates the author at his most accomplished and flowing. Miles Coverdale is our protagonist: his chief aim is to improve the lives and community of Blithedale Farm. We hear the myth of the Veiled Lady, a popular clairvoyant who promptly disappears from the community. Shortly thereafter at a dinner between the members of the small community, a friend of Coverdale named Hollingsworth arrives carrying a pallid young girl in his arms - she is accepted into the group, and immediately strikes up friendships. Unusual for a romantic novel for its mystical and mythical references, The Blithedale Romance often diverts to philosophical and religious topics with themes such as life and death, the rights of women, and clairvoyance appearing. Through his abilities as an author, Nathaniel manages to build interesting characters and relationships amid this reflective eclecticism.
