Eingebettet in die Geschichte eines Mordes zeichnet Horv?th gekonnt das verstörend eindrückliche Bild einer gedankenlosen, ideologisch verblendeten Jugend am Beginn des NS-Regimes. Der szenisch komponierte Roman erschien erstmals 1937 in Amsterdam und wurde schon kurz danach in acht weitere Sprachen übersetzt. Trotz des 1938 folgenden Verbots durch die Nationalsozialisten machte er seinen Autor schnell international bekannt.

UNGDOM UTEN GUDEtter glemsel under 2. verdenskrig og i den første etterkrigstiden ble den østerriksk-ungarske Ödön von Horváth (1901-1938) gjenoppdaget som forfatter og opplevde en forbløffende renessanse, ikke minst takket være at den unge Peter Handke trakk han fram som politisk teaterdikter: "Jeg liker disse forstyrrende setningene hos ham som viser bevissthetens sprang og motsetninger slik man ellers bare finner hos Tsjekov og Shakepeare." Romanen Ungdom uten Gud er imidlertid bare tilsynelatende en presist konstruert fabel som gir et nesten uhyggelig forutseende bilde av den fremrykkende nazismen. Med utgangspunkt i en hverdagslig historie og et nakent språk trekkes vi inn i vår nære fortids store moralske dilemma: hvordan kunne dette skje? En lærer er på telttur med gutteklassen sin for å "dyktiggjøre" ungdommene for den nye ideologi og en mulig krig. Mellom tre av guttene utspiller det seg etter hvert et drama på liv og død. Læreren nøler med å gripe inn og et mord er et faktum. Skylds- og ansvarsforholdene blir mer og mer uklare. Mange er mistenkt. Men er vi ikke alle skyldige, også leseren?
