SONG OF SHINING WONDER & OTHER MASNAVI POEMS by Paul SmithT he masnavi is the form used in Persian, Turkish, Urdu, Arabic and other poetry to write epic ballads or romances and is essentially a Persian invention. Each couplet has a different rhyme with both lines rhyming. This is to allow the poet greater freedom to go into a longer description of the subject he has chosen to present. All of the great, long, narrative poems of Persia were composed in this form that is not known in classical Arabic poetry. The most famous poems written in this form are the 'Shahnama' (Book of the Kings) of Firdausi, the 'Enclosed Garden of the Truth' of Sana'i, the 'Five Treasures' of Nizami, the 'Conference of the Birds' and 'The Book of God' and many others by 'Attar, the 'Seven Thrones' of Jami, the ten masnavis of Amir Khusrau and of course the great 'Masnavi' of Rumi. Here Paul Smith who has translated many of the above gives five examples of his own masnavi poems in English: Song of Shining Wonder, The Cross of God, The Time Has Come, It's All You, Adam's Pledge, Winebringer Book. HATEF OF ISFAHAN AND HIS FAMOUS TARJI-BAND Translation & Introduction Paul Smith "Hatef won fame by his unsurpassed Tarji-band, a work that sings of a mystical vision, albeit with all the conventional erotic and wine-house accessories, but in an uncommonly straightforward style, in a lucidly arranged metaphorical language intensified to the highest degree of perception, free of the euphuisms and obscurities of the foregoing period. Here we have one of the best examples of Persian poetry in the 12th/18th century and one that at the same time stands on an incomparably higher level than anything else this poet produced." Jan Rypka. "Hatef of Isfahan was a great Sufi, who wrote in both Arabic and Persian. He was especially celebrated as a writer of ghazals and was the author of a famous poem of recurring lines (tarji-band). He writes as a lover of God and uses the imagery of wine of the Divine Love which brings rapture and ecstasy to those who receive it." Margaret Smith. Here is a translation in the correct form, with the beauty and meaning of this great poem revealed. Included: Life & Times & Poetry of Hatef of Isfahan, Selected Bibliography, 'The Various Tarji-bands of poets before Hatef, The Persian Text of Hatef's Tarji-band, Samples of some of the various translations of Hatef's Tarji-band. RABI'A BASRI: SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith RABI'A BASRI (717-801). Throughout her life, her Love of God, poverty and self-denial did not waver. She did not possess much other than a broken jug, a rush mat and a brick, which she used as a pillow. She spent nights in prayer and contemplation, chiding herself if she slept because it took her away from her active Love of God. As her fame grew she had many disciples. More interesting than her asceticism is the actual concept of Divine Love that Rabi'a introduced. She was the first to introduce the idea that God should be loved for God's own sake, not out of fear -- as earlier Sufis had done. She taught that repentance was a gift from God as none could repent unless God had already accepted him and given this gift of repentance. She had a high ideal, worshipping God neither from fear of Hell nor from hope of Paradise, for she saw such self-interest as unworthy of God's servants; emotions like fear and hope were like veils. She is widely considered the most important of the early Sufi poets. Here are most of the small number of poems that survive in the forms they were composed, an introduction on her life and times and a chapter on Sufi poetry. 107 pages. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'." It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished."
