Ever since its discovery in 1742 the carotid body has remained an organ of mystery. Originally described as a ganglion, it was subsequently regarded as a gland, chromaffin paraganglion and non-chromaffin paraganglion. In 1928 it was shown to be a chemoreceptor with close associations with the function of baroreception in the adjacent carotid sinus and perhaps within its own substance. These discoveries led physiologists to embark on a series of elegant experimental studies on a number of animal species which have, however, so far failed to identify the transducer for detection of changes in tension of arterial blood gases or the mechanism of chemor­ eception. Pathologists on the other hand have largely ignored the carotid body, restricting their interest to its tumour, the chemodectoma. A remarkable disparity in knowledge of the organ has resulted, with most information being available on the physiology of chemoreceptor tissue in laboratory animals. In contrast, there has been sparse interest and awareness of the pathology in man of this nodule of tissue lying in the carotid bifurcation whose functional activity is suggested by the high blood flow it receives, and its rich content of biogenic amines and a wide variety of peptides. This book is an attempt to redress this unsatisfactory situation. During the last few years our understanding of the detailed histology and ultrastructure of the human carotid body has improved.

Art had become a commercial endeavor in ways never before imagined, and the story details Rambert’s—and, by extension, Cézanne’s—attempts to cope with the shift. One of the most confounding aspects of American society-the one that perhaps most frequently perplexes observers both domestic and foreign-is the vast contradiction between what anthropologists might term the “hot” and “cold” elements in the culture. The hot encompasses the dynamic and progressive aspects of a society dedicated to growth and productivity, marked by mobility, innovation, and optimism. In contrast, the cold embodies rigid social forms and archaic beliefs, fundamentalisms of all kinds, racism and xenophobia, anti-intellectualism, cultural atavism, and ignorance-in short, the primitive. For cultural critic Paul Smith, the tension between progressive and primitive is a constitutive condition of American history and culture. In Primitive America, Smith contemplates this primary contradiction as it has played out in the years since 9/11. The focus of this book is the process of unionization in the road haulage industry, in particular, the role of leadership in determining the quality of union organization. It analyzes the early history of road haulage unions, the creation of the TGWU, the failure to organize the industry during the 1930s and the consequent reliance upon statutory regulation of wages and conditions, and the subsequent institutional stasis of the TGWU during the 1950s. The transformation and expansion of union organization during the period of 1963-1973, conceived as the mobilization of collective power by workers within the employment relationship, is explored in case studies of TGWU branches in Birmingham, Liverpool and London, and within the wider context of TGWU. The retrenchment of union organization as a result of recession and Conservative government legislation, 1980-1994, is explored. The book concludes with an assessment of theories of unionization and democracy, and the role of leadership, with reference to the historical development of British trade unionism. The research utilizes oral and documentary sources, including hitherto unused archives of the TGWU and the Road Haulage Association.
