In the pantheon of English poets, Shelley has long occupied a lofty place, his poems as admired for their profound thought and subtle perceptions as for the music and fervor of their language. His life as well as his poetry embraced the passions, ideals, and causes of Romanticism, whose emergence and early influences coincided with the dates of his own brief life (1792-1822). This selection of many of Shelley's best-known and most representative poems will give readers an exciting encounter with one of the most original and stimulating figures in English poetry. Thirty-seven poems of varying lengths are included, among them such well-known verses as -Adonais, - -Ode to the West Wind, - -Ozymandias, - -The Cloud, - -To a Skylark- -Hymn to Intellectual Beauty, - and -Arethusa.-

'Shelley's conception of love lies at the heart of his radical views on social justice, political liberty, and poetry itself'. In bringing together for the first time Shelley's almost unknown prose writings on love, Richard Holmes presents an intellectual and emotional portrait of a great poet's beliefs and personality developing from adolescence to the threshold of maturity, when at the age of thirty they were tragically cut short. The anthology does not merely give a Romantic poet's view of romantic passion, but treats of Love at large, in all its forms and manifestations. The collection is divided biographically into six thematic sections, so that the reader may follow closely the development of Shelley's views in response to his experiences. Shelley's wonderfully graceful version of Plato's 'Symposium' is rescued from obscurity, and three telling extracts from his lesser-read long poems serve to crystallize his attitudes to love at critical points. The coolness and clarity of Shelley's prose, his powers of argument and of concrete description and his fierce intellectual honesty are qualities rare in any age. His social, political and philosophical concerns are of the highest interest, engaging as they do the fundamental questions of human relationships in a radically searching and imaginative spirit. As Richard Holmes writes, Shelley's prose writings on love 'take us back to the deeper appreciation of his major poetry, and forward to the better comprehension of our own hearts'.

With an Introduction, Notes and Bibliography by Dr Bruce Woodcock, Senior Lecturer in English, University of Hull. Shelley's short, prolific life produced some of the most memorable and well-known lyrics of the Romantic period. But he was also the most radical writer in the English literary tradition of his day, a fiery political visionary committed to social change and progress. The generous selection in this volume represents the wide range of his writing, both poetry and prose. Arranged chronologically, the accompanying introductory essays set Shelley's works in their historical, social and political context. They provide a vivid insight into the life and times of this volcanic spirit whose inspiring voice called on the people of England to: ‘Rise like lions after slumber In unvanquishable number; Shake your chains to earth like dew Which in sleep had fallen on you. Ye are many, they are few.’ (The Mask of Anarchy)

Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was perhaps the most intellectually adventurous of the great Romantic poets. A classicist, a headlong visionary, a social radical, and a poet of serene artistry with a lyric touch second to none, Shelley personified the richly various--and contradictory--energies of his time. This compact yet comprehensive collection showcases all the extraordinary facets of Shelley's art. From his most famous lyrical poems ("Ozymandias," "The Cloud") to his political and philosophical works ("The Mask of Anarchy," "Hymn to Intellectual Beauty") to excerpts from his remarkable dramatic and narrative verses ("Alastor," "Prometheus Unbound"), Shelley's words gave voice to English romanticism's deepest aspirations.

Volume I of this major critical edition of Shelley's prose - the first since the Julian Edition (1926-30) - provides authoritative texts of The Necessity of Atheism, the Irish pamphlets, the vegetarian essays, The Assassins, A Refutation of Deism, On Christianity, the `Hermit of Marlow' political writings, and several reviews. The texts, which are based on first editions and manuscripts, were all written between Shelley's last months in Oxford in 1811 and his departure for Italy in 1818: they preserve his original punctuation and spelling, and textual notes give copy-text variants, revisions, and deletions. In addition, the Introduction supplies a full account of previous editions, and places the prose pieces in their political context; and the commentary pays particular attention to the problems of dating the manuscripts. The commentary also contains more detailed copy-text descriptions, more thorough accounts of provenance, and more information on sources and allusions, than any previous edition of the works.
