Set in Calcutta in the early-nineteenth century, the play Chirakumar Sabha (The Bachelors' Club), originally written by Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), is neatly aimed at matrimony, and against celibacy. Calcutta was the capital of British India then. Members of Chirakumar Sabha have vowed to remain unmarried throughout life. The Club is headed by Chandrababu, a professor, who lives with his niece, Nirmala and at whose house the meetings of Chirakumar Sabha are held. The coup de grace comes when the sole survivor, Purna, falls for Chandrababu's niece. A hilarious account of a group of bachelors eventually getting married in due course, this translation from the Bengali original by Sukhendu Ray captures the spirit of the original play while retaining its readability.

The Essential Tagore showcases the genius of India’s Rabindranath Tagore, the first Asian Nobel Laureate and possibly the most prolific and diverse serious writer the world has ever known. Marking the 150th anniversary of Tagore’s birth, this ambitious collection—the largest single volume of his work available in English—attempts to represent his extraordinary achievements in ten genres: poetry, songs, autobiographical works, letters, travel writings, prose, novels, short stories, humorous pieces, and plays. In addition to the newest translations in the modern idiom, it includes a sampling of works originally composed in English, his translations of his own works, three poems omitted from the published version of the English Gitanjali, and examples of his artwork. Tagore’s writings are notable for their variety and innovation. His Sonar Tari signaled a distinctive turn toward the symbolic in Bengali poetry. “The Lord of Life,” from his collection Chitra, created controversy around his very personal concept of religion. Chokher Bali marked a decisive moment in the history of the Bengali novel because of the way it delved into the minds of men and women. The skits in Vyangakautuk mocked upper-class pretensions. Prose pieces such as “The Problem and the Cure” were lauded by nationalists, who also sang Tagore’s patriotic songs. Translations for this volume were contributed by Tagore specialists and writers of international stature, including Amitav Ghosh, Amit Chaudhuri, and Sunetra Gupta.

My Reminiscences is a fascinating autobiography by the great Indian poet/author, Rabindranath Tagore. "Upon the reality of life he erects his faith, and buttresses it with whatever of devotional good he may find in any religion. No ascetic, Kabir pictures the mystic world of his belief with a beautiful richness of symbolism." Philadelphia Public Ledger. Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861 - 7 August 1941), sobriquet Gurudev, was a Bengali polymath who reshaped Bengali literature and music, as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of Gitanjali and its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse", he became in 1913 the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Tagore's poetic songs were viewed as spiritual and mercurial; however, his "elegant prose and magical poetry" remain largely unknown outside Bengal. He is sometimes referred to as "the Bard of Bengal".

Rabindranath Tagore's poems, songs, and short stories are priceless treasure of humanity. They are now in the public domain. The reader will be able to read free online and download free from various websites. However, with the thought that the reader would like to treasure a printed copy we have designed this lovely book to the delight of a poem-lover. This humble presentation is worthy of a collector's showcase. The text of 'Gitanjali' has been proofread and copyedited, with reference to the original publication "Gitanjali (song-offerings) and Fruit-Gathering" (Leipzig: Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1922) that I have in my collection. Tagore used local terms such as Babla, maya, neem, and vina in his translation. We have added an appendix giving more information on these terms for the international readers.

We have thousands of titles available, and we invite you to search for us by name, contact us via our website, or download our most recent catalogues. Perhaps it is well for me to explain that the subject matter of the papers published in this book has not been philosophically treated, nor has it been approached from the scholar's point of view. The writer has been brought up in a family where texts of the Upanishads are used in daily worship; and he has had before him the example of his father, who lived his long life in the closest communion with God, while not neglecting his duties to the world, or allowing his keen interest in all human affairs to suffer any abatement. So in these papers, it may be hoped, western readers will have an opportunity of coming into touch with the ancient spirit of India as revealed in our sacred texts and manifested in the life of to-day. All the great utterances of man have to be judged not by the letter but by the spirit the spirit which unfolds itself with the growth of life in history. We get to know the real meaning of Christianity by observing its living aspect at the present moment however different that may be, even in important respects, from the Christianity of earlier periods. For western scholars the great religious scriptures of India seem to possess merely a retrospective and arch logical interest; but to us they are of living importance, and we cannot help thinking that they lose their significance when exhibited in labelled cases mummied specimens of human thought and aspiration, preserved for all time in the wrappings of erudition.
