Planning Local Authority Services for the Elderly

Planning Local Authority Services for the Elderly

In the 1960s, planning the development of services for the elderly was a subject of considerable importance in Britain, both because existing services were known to be inadequate, and because the proportion of older people, especially of those over seventy-five, was expected to increase during the next thirty years. Originally published in 1969, this book describes how a sample of local authorities were planning their services for the elderly, how they estimated the need for services and the availability of resources, and how they linked their plans with those of other organisations. By providing a deeper understanding of the difficulties faced by local authority officials when trying to plan, and by suggesting a realistic approach to planning, the report made a valuable contribution towards putting the planning of services for the elderly on to a sound basis. It would have been helpful to all those concerned with the planning and administration of the social services at the time. At the same time the historical background and the insight given into the operation of local authority services should still be of interest to readers today.

Saint Bonaventure's Journey of the Soul into God is one of the most important works in the Christian mystical tradition. Highly regarded for it clarity, rational organization, and subtle insights, it is also one of the key theological treatises of the high Middle Ages. In this volume, Randall Smith provides the first comprehensive commentary in English of Bonaventure's classic text. He situates the work within its historical, intellectual, and cultural contexts, showing how a consideration of Bonaventure's sources helps us appreciate his text. Smith also provides an extended analysis not only of the intellectual content of the Journey of the Soul into God, but also its structure and creative use of imagery. Analyzing how Bonaventure employed and adapted the methods of thirteenth century sermo modernus-style of preaching to produce a deftly condensed work, he demonstrates how his text is at once a profound work of mysticism as well as a sophisticated and thoughtful work of medieval theology.

Most of us are taught to trust what we can see, smell, hear, taste, or feel. If it doesn't fit into any of these categories, then it probably does not exist. Then something extraordinary happens and we are suddenly aware that there is another world that we are living in- The Spiritual World. We sense the reality of this place, we long for eternal purpose and existence, we witness things that don't conform to the physical laws of our natural world. Throughout history, mankind has explored this world, and sought to discover connections between the natural world and the spiritual world. Many have sought an understanding and connection with the Creator of our Universe. Religions have formed as a result of mankind's attempt to understand and manipulate this other world we live in. Years ago, God revealed Himself personally to an individual named Abraham, who became the father of a nation of desert nomads who eventually settled in the land bridge between Africa, Asia, and Europe. God revealed Himself to the Jews, and gave them His principles for living. Eventually God took on human flesh and lived among us, so that we would not have any misunderstanding who He was, and why He desired an intimate relationship with us. Since then, there has been millions who have been touched by God, and have been given their citizenship in the Spiritual World. They have become members of God's family, and recognize the temporary nature of the natural world. Living In The Spiritual World is a lively discussion between three principle individuals:1) Dr. Randall Smith -an acclaimed archeologist and Biblical Culture expert, who has lived and worked in Israel most of the past three decades and taken groups on study tours in Greece, Turkey, Italy, the and other sites in Europe. For many years Randy trained all of the guides of the Israeli Ministry of Tourism;2) Laura Bagby- an aerobics instructor, social worker, hair stylist, founder of the Rio Coco Cafes in Florida and Honduras, and mother of four;3) Michael Bagby- a historian, Naval Aviator, and founder of a school project in Central America. These three bring a very practical perspective to Living In The Spiritual World because of their life experience of working in projects in the Third and Fourth World. Living In The Spiritual World covers topics such as angels and demons, the veracity of the Bible, understanding the Bible in its cultural context, how God reveals Himself through three distinct personalities, why humans are God's favored creation, and what is the mission that God has given us. Most importantly, we hope these discussions will develop a deeper understanding and intimacy with God that will propel us all through our lives in The Spiritual World.

Video clip promo: http: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNJLmcNsUbE These stories consist of a variety of genres including adventure, corporate intrigue, Old West satire, romance and science fiction, and provide an engaging combination of conflict, action, love, sex and killings. They are also included in the subsequent collection "Willful Women". *** "About Sam" has a seemingly ordinary housewife who is secretly a Homeland Security agent. Share in her conflicts, family issues, adventures and romance. *** "Lost in Space-Time" is based on rumors, physics blogs, and NASA videos found on the internet. A crew of young astronauts solves the mystery of space travel. Using reverse engineered alien technology from Area 51, they employ tachyons and space folding to travel great distances quickly. They hope to one day control the where and the when of their destinations. *** "Six-Gun Saloon Girls" is an Old West spoof; a story of gambling, girls and guns. Share the adventures of Sarah, her sister, and the other saloon girls. Most of us had at least one teacher in our childhood that we loved to hate. Mine was called Big Bertha and, as this story is a spoof, she is briefly included here accordingly. *** "Blake Industries" is a story of corporate misdeeds and another Ponzi scheme discovered. The Feds get involved, a Learjet gets into trouble, and a romance flourishes. *** "Pirate Queen" is in a category by itself as it crosses into increased intensity due to a higher level of sex and violence, and may not be appropriate for the more sensitive reader. A young Florida woman becomes involved with some drug runners and their cigarette boat. She is subsequently kidnapped by a more experienced and vicious group of the same, bringing out her suppressed sadistic side as they all expand their misdeeds to include modern-day Caribbean piracy. She evolves into the wicked and notorious Pirate Queen. Please go to www.willfulwomen.info for more titles and more information. Follow @willfulwomen on Twitter

This study reflects a growing recognition of the contribution that studies of the post-war 'welfare state' can make to contemporary debates about the restructuring of welfare. Drawing on the community care debates from 1971 to 1993, it illuminates contemporary concerns about such key issues as rationing care, the health and social care divide, the changing role of residential care and the growing emphasis on provider competition. From community care to market care focuses on the interpretation and development of national policy at local authority level in four contrasting local authorities. The results of the study will make a significant contribution to our understanding of the community care provision of older people.

Recent community care changes have raised fundamental issues about the changing role of the public, voluntary and informal sectors in the provision of social care to older people. They have also raised issues about the health and social care interface, the extent to which services should be rationed and the respective roles of residential care and care at home. From Poor Law to community care sets these debates in the context of the historical growth of welfare services from the outbreak of the Second World War through to the establishment of social services departments in 1971. Based on extensive research on primary sources, such as the Public Records Office and interviews with key actors, the book considers the changing perceptions of the needs of elderly people, the extent to which they have been a priority for resources and the possibilities for a policy which combines respect for elderly people with an avoidance of the exploitation of relatives. This is an updated second edition of The development of welfare services for elderly people, first published by Croom Helm, 1985. It is essential reading for practitioners and policy makers interested in gerontology, policy studies, community care and postgraduate students studying and training in a range of health and social care related professions.
