--Emilio Balturi

'I concluded that I was a substance whose whole essence or nature resides only in thinking, and which, in order to exist, has no need of place and is not dependent on any material thing.' Descartes's A Discourse on the Method of Correctly Conducting One's Reason and Seeking Truth in the Sciences marks a watershed in European thought; in it, the author provides an informal intellectual autobiography in the vernacular for a non-specialist readership, sweeps away all previous philosophical traditions, and sets out in brief his radical new philosophy, which begins with a proof of the existence of the self (the famous 'cogito ergo sum'), next deduces from it the existence and nature of God, and ends by offering a radical new account of the physical world and of human and animal nature. This new translation is accompanied by a substantial introductory essay which draws on Descartes's correspondence to examine his motivation and the impact of his great work on his contemporaries. Detailed notes explain his philosophical terminology and ideas. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. René Descartes was a central figure in the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century. In his Discourse on Method he outlined the contrast between mathematics and experimental sciences, and the extent to which each one can achieve certainty. Drawing on his own work in geometry, optics, astronomy and physiology, Descartes developed the hypothetical method that characterizes modern science, and this soon came to replace the traditional techniques derived from Aristotle. Many of Descartes' most radical ideas - such as the disparity between our perceptions and the realities that cause them - have been highly influential in the development of modern philosophy.

This is the second of a new two-volume edition of the works of Descartes in Penguin Classics. This volume is designed for students who approach Descartes from the point of view of his philosophy of science. Includes DISCOURSE ON METHOD, the most accessible and well-known of his discussions of scientific method; the first seven chapters of the earlier, unpublished work, THE WORLD; as well as a selection of Descartes' correspondence and his replies to his critics.

Selections from the principles of philosophy presents a thoughtful exploration of the foundational ideas that shape human understanding and the nature of existence. The work opens with a reflection on the purpose of philosophy as a means to establish certainty in knowledge through reasoned inquiry. It emphasizes the importance of questioning all assumptions to uncover truths that are beyond doubt, offering an approach that values logic and clarity over inherited beliefs. The text explores the distinction between the mind and the body, portraying them as separate yet interconnected aspects of reality. It also engages with the concept of divine existence and the underlying order of the universe, proposing that understanding such principles can elevate human wisdom. By examining how rational thought guides moral and intellectual progress, the book extends its philosophical reach beyond theory into practical life. It encourages individuals to recognize the relationship between knowledge, clarity, and self-awareness as essential tools for understanding both the world and themselves.

In this groundbreaking work, Ren Descartes embarks on a radical search for truth by questioning everything he once believed. Using his method of systematic doubt, he strips away assumptions and rebuilds knowledge on the firm ground of reason and certainty. From the famous declaration cogito, ergo sum ("I think, therefore I am") to reflections on the nature of existence, the relationship between mind and body, and the concept of a perfect being, Descartes crafts a framework that reshaped the very foundations of philosophy. First published in the 17th century, Discourse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy laid the foundation for modern philosophy and rational inquiry. By challenging medieval scholasticism and prioritizing reason, Descartes transformed approaches to knowledge, science, and metaphysics. His bold exploration of doubt, certainty, and the nature of reality influenced generations of thinkers across disciplines, from philosophy to psychology. Clear, precise, and revolutionary, the text remains a cornerstone of Western intellectual history.
