Tracing the movement of people to and from Liberia in the nineteenth century. Established by the American Colonization Society in the early nineteenth century as a settlement for free people of color, the West African colony of Liberia is usually seen as an endpoint in the journeys of those who traveled there. In Atlantic Passages, Robert Murray reveals that many Liberian settlers did not remain in Africa but returned repeatedly to the United States, and he explores the ways this movement shaped the construction of race in the Atlantic world. Tracing the transatlantic crossings of Americo-Liberians between 1820 and 1857, in addition to delving into their experiences on both sides of the ocean, Murray discusses how the African neighbors and inhabitants of Liberia recognized significant cultural differences in the newly arrived African Americans and racially categorized them as “whites.” He examines the implications of being perceived as simultaneously white and Black, arguing that these settlers acquired an exotic, foreign identity that escaped associations with primitivism and enabled them to claim previously inaccessible privileges and honors in America. Highlighting examples of the ways in which blackness and whiteness have always been contested ideas, as well as how understandings of race can be shaped by geography and cartography, Murray offers many insights into what it meant to be Black and white in the space between Africa and America. Publication of the paperback edition made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

What happens when a grocer's boy moves from the saddle of his delivery bike to an executive's chair? As the 1970s dawned, Robert Murray was on the way up - newly appointed to a senior role in one of Scotland's most respected grocery distribution businesses. However, fate would have more than a few surprises in store for the man who had worked his way up from humble beginnings in grocery delivery on rural Tayside to the top level of corporate decision-making. But it wasn't all about the company boardroom; Robert's life was full of incidents and surprises during these unpredictable decades of his career, which saw his young family grow and new friendships forged. Time and again, he discovered that the importance of professional camaraderie was just as vital as meeting the needs of the increasingly-demanding consumer. From the social and economic turbulence of the 1980s to the ruthless commercial competitiveness of the 1990s, Robert witnessed sweeping changes in the grocery world - a distributive trades revolution which was to transform the way companies did business in the UK and far beyond. Join him as he pedals on through thirty years in the grocery trade before parking up his old pushbike for the final time.

Out of dire necessity, Queen Guinevere has emerged from the nunnery to rule Camelot and lead a quartet of knights on a mission of national survival to rid the land of a terrorizing force of Scandinavian marauders led by a fierce chieftain. Follow Martain, son of Sir Kay, adopted brother of King Arthur; Elias, pious warrior monk; Shane, newly risen woodsman; and Varnell, student of Merlin, as they trek the English isle striving to keep their oath to protect their Sovereign and restore order to the realm. How shall the invader be dealt with? What former hero will re-emerge to offer aid? Will the question of legitimate succession be solved in order to allow a continuation of the tales of Camelot? Will a just King, elusive figure in the historical record, once again rule? All these conflicts will be resolved in elegant verse, the apotheosis of rhyme, derived, adapted, and perfected in order that the tales of Arthur's heirs may be sung as they were meant to be.

Murray’s study of the covenant theme begins with a chronological survey of the concept, beginning at the creation itself. He traces this theme through the Bible, noting its key components of justice and peace. The concept is a shared one between Judaism and Christianity, and Murray suggests that it continues to have ecological as well as spiritual relevance to the world today.

This is a true story of adventure set against a backdrop of the sea, a money making scheme, and international intrigue. There was money to be made in West Africa. The Government of Ghana needed commercial fishing vessels. Acquire and deliver a couple of boats. How hard could that be? Bob Murray and three of his sons soon found out. In this powerful and intriguing true story you'll be drawn into the story, and perhaps live the adventure for yourself, A father and three of his sons set out on what was advertised to be the adventure of a lifetime, In that, they were not disappointed. But the adventure part, at times was more than they had bargained for. It was the start of the 1975 hurricane season, and they were sailing up the barrel of the Atlantic's most prolific creators of devastating winds and seas. Veritable mountains of water came crashing down on their small wooden craft. They could feel these mountains building like a voltanic precursor to an eruption The common thought was, 'Is this the one that flips us over, and we meet our maker in some watery habitat?" Two storms at sea and a fire below decks added unscheduled excitement At the time of the fire, the nearest charted land mass was over 1,000 miles ahead, the nearest uncharted mass was just over a mile away.straight down That thought did not ease the minds of any on board. But when they landed in Tema, Ghana, the seaport for Accra, the boys were asked, "Would you go again?" Their voices rose in unison, "You bet, when do we leave?"
