This is the first book to comprehensively cover the evolution of airport design, from the start of commercial aviation in 1919 to the present day. Many books have been written about airport design at a particular moment in history, but none have rigorously considered why, where, when and how the ideas we now take for granted originated. This book traces the history of airport design considering the philosophies adopted by designers, the functional layouts they have developed and the resultant form of the airport through a series of 40 case studies divided into 7 eras of approximately 20 years each. The themes include:The philosophies underpinning airport designThe evolution of design responsesHow airports have avoided obsolescenceIdentification of the key turning pointsThe evolution of master plans and terminal concepts in response to increasing traffic volumesThe future of airports in terms of environmental sustainability and the Covid-19 hiatusThe case studies are international, covering the USA, Germany, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Spain, United Arab Emirates, China, Turkey, Mexico, Australia and Poland. They are illustrated with full colour, many of which have not been published before and form part of an incredible graphic package. This book is essential reading for architects, engineers, planners and environmentalists alike.

There are many textbooks on research methods, plenty of books on popular science, and specialist texts on a whole range of academic fields. However, few bring these together as a framework for a career involving research, and few attempt a practical appraisal of the challenges and opportunities involved in being 'a researcher'. Here, the principles underlying humanity's past and continuing acquisition of knowledge are illustrated across a variety of academic fields, from history to quantum physics - telling stories of clever and inventive people with good ideas, but also of personalities, politics, and power. This book draws together these strands to provide an informal and concise account of knowledge acquisition in all its guises. Having set out what research hopes to achieve, and why we are all researchers at heart, early chapters describe the basic principles underlying this - ways of thinking which may date back to the philosophers of the Athenian marketplace but are still powerful influences on the way research is carried out today. Drawing on a broad range of disciplines, Stewart takes the reader well beyond the pure 'scientific method', which might work well enough in physics or chemistry but falls apart in life sciences, let alone humanities. Later chapters consider the realities of carrying out research and the ways in which these continue to shape its progress - researchers and their personalities, their employers, funding, publication, political forces, and power structures. Written in an accessible and engaging style, this book is for anyone embarking on a research project or beginning to think about a career involving research, and for those in need of refocusing on why they started research in the first place.

The dogs of Easthill believe in the Thumbald, a mysterious locket which supposedly puts them in touch with goodness, beauty, and truth. At least, they think they believe in it. Some of them aren't sure. Some of them think it's nonsense. Others just want to groom their bottoms. A Border-Collie called Cloud believes in the Thumbald more than most. He was found abandoned as a puppy, drifting down a stream on a makeshift raft. With no family to speak of and few other attachments, he finds that he wants to believe in the meaning and mystery of Easthill’s sacred prize. But when a strange black dog upstages an annual festival by arranging to open the locket, the dogs find that there is nothing inside it. A crisis follows. Was there ever such a thing as the Thumbald? Or was it always nonsense? And then there’s the threat of Animo: an evil spirit who wants to trap the dogs in a web of lies and bring them under his control. Troubled by these events, Cloud decides to go in search of the truth. He must travel West to seek out Balder, the wisest of dogs and supreme master in the way of the Bald. He sets out with three unruly companions. Hoo Hoo is a cocky Springer Spaniel with the power to shape-shift (frequently into unhelpful things, like an exploding mushroom). Porker is a greedy St Bernard, who can’t keep his paws off sausage sandwiches. And Mouse is a shy Dachshund, with a disconcerting tendency to disappear at will. Together, they must work out what's true and what's just a lot of hairy dewlaps.
