Rudolf Steiner

During the re-founding of the Anthroposophical Society at Christmas1923, Rudolf Steiner also reconstituted the "Esoteric School" which had originally functioned in Germany from 1904 until 1914, when the outset of the First World War made it's continuance impossible. However, the original school was only for a relatively few selected individuals, whereas the new school was incorporated into the Free School for Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland. Rudolf Steiner was only able to give nineteen lessons - plus seven "recapitulation" lessons - for the First Class before his illness and death. His intention had been to develop three classes. The lessons were recorded by a stenographer, then typed in clear text without having been reviewed by Rudolf Steiner. They had not been publicly accessible until recently. This is Volume Two.

This lecture was held just over one hindred years ago, in the aftermath of the First World War and the 'flu pandemic' of 1917-1919 - a period of far-reaching constraints and widespread human suffering. The correspondence to our own times are hard to ignore. In these circumstances, it is all the more appropriate to bring this lecture to the fore.

THE SUPER PHYSICAL WORLD AND ITS GNOSISIn this practical age and because of the many various claims of the day, it is but natural that people, who hear of transcendentalism should at once ask the question: "How may we for ourselves know the truth of such statements?" Indeed, it is noticeable, as a characteristic of the majority, that they will accept nothing on faith, or mere "authority," but wish rather to rely entirely upon their own judgment. Therefore, when a mystic undertakes to explain something of the super physical nature of man, and of the destiny of the human soul and spirit before birth and after death, he is at once confronted with that fundamental demand. Such doctrine, they seem to think is important only when you have shown them the way by which they may convince themselves of its truth. Rudolf Steiner was a philosopher, social thinker, architect, and esotericist. His philosophical work, which he termed spiritual science, sought to provide a connection between the cognitive path of Western philosophy and the inner and spiritual needs of the human being. In The Way of Initiation, Steiner details the exercises and moral qualities to be cultivated on the path to a conscious experience of 'supersensible' realities. His short but powerful book is intended as a guide for achieving spiritual vision.

Yleinen antroposofinen seura perustettiin Joulupäivillä vuodenvaihteessa 1923/24, kun oli kulunut vuosi ensimmäisen Goetheanumin tuhopoltosta. Joulupäivien aikana pidetyissä jäsenesitelmissä Rudolf Steiner kuvaa ihmisen henkistä kehitystä, tietoisuuden tasoja ja suhdetta maailmaan eri kulttuurikausina muinaisesta Intiasta nykyaikaan asti. Kahden ihmisyksilön kohtalon kuvaus havainnollistaa kehityksen kulkua. Katse kohdistuu aluksi Gilgamešin ja Enkidun elämään ja karmiseen suhteeseen egyptiläis-kaldealaisella aikakaudella ja seuraa heidän yhteistyötään Aleksanteri Suuren ja Aristoteleen inkarnaatioissa Efesoksen mysteerien yhteydessä. Efesoksen temppelin tuhopoltto mainitaan jumalien kateuden seurauksena ja ensimmäisen Goetheanumin tuhopoltto seurauksena ihmisten kateudesta. Joulupäivien mantrat ovat ihmisen sydämeen laskettu peruskivi, ja antroposofisen pyrkimyksen päämäärä on estää ihmiskuntaa menettämästä historian vaatiman kynnyksenylityksen kohdistaessaan ajattelukykynsä pelkästään fyysiseen maailmaan.

Das Rätselmärchen Goethes hat im Lauf der Jahrhunderte viele Interpretationsversuche erfahren. Rudolf Steiner hat sich die Frage gestellt, welche Gedankenimpulse Goethe dabei geleitet haben mögen, Gestalten wie die grüne Schlange und die Lilie, den Jüngling, den Fährmann, den Alten mit der Lampe, die Könige aus seiner Fantasie zu schaffen. Steiners Aufsatz ist dieser Textausgabe des Goetheschen Märchens beigefügt. ? Was Goethe zu leben wünschte, um sich eines wahrhaft menschenwürdigen Daseins bewusst sein zu dürfen, fand er in Schillers ästhetischen Briefen ausgesprochen. Begreiflich ist es daher, dass auch in seiner Seele Gedanken angeregt wurden, die er auf seine Art in der Richtung der Schillerschen auszugestalten suchte. Aus diesen Gedanken heraus ist die Dichtung erwachsen, die so mannigfaltige Auslegungen gefunden hat: Das Rätselmärchen, mit dem Goethe seine in den Horen erschienene Erzählung >Unterhaltung deutscher Ausgewanderten< schloss.?
